VA - Dazed & Confused, A Stoned-Out Salute to Led Zeppelin [2016]

Dazed & Confused, A Stoned-Out Salute To Led Zeppelin is a tribute album that celebrates the legacy of one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Led Zeppelin. The album features covers of their songs by various bands from the psychedelic and hard rock genres, who pay homage to the originals while adding their own twists and flavors. The album has 14 tracks, spanning some of the most iconic songs by Led Zeppelin, such as Whole Lotta Love, Dazed and Confused, No Quarter, Kashmir and Stairway to Heaven.

The album starts with Siena Root’s version of Whole Lotta Love, which gives the song a heavy metal edge with powerful vocals and organ. This is followed by Fireball Ministry’s rendition of The Rover, which is a faithful and energetic hard rock version of the song from the Physical Graffiti album. The album then takes a more interesting and original turn with The Cult Of Dom Keller’s rendition of Dazed and Confused, which creates a heavy and electronic landscape that enhances the psychedelic mood of the song. This is one of the songs that Led Zeppelin borrowed from another artist, Jake Holmes, who wrote and recorded it in 1967. The original Jake Holmes version is also worth checking out.

One of the highlights of the album is Mothership’s rendition of Heartbreaker, which is a rocking and groovy version of one of Led Zeppelin’s early classics. Mothership is also the name of a greatest hits compilation by Led Zeppelin. Another highlight is Dead Meadow’s rendition of No Quarter, which transforms the song into a dark and hypnotic trip that showcases their psychedelic skills. One of the most creative and original tracks on the album is Electric Eye’s version of Immigrant Song, which slows down the rhythm and adds some trippy elements that make the song sound fresh and exciting. Electric Eye is a band from Norway that deserves more attention for their music. Another creative track is The Tulips’ cover of Stairway to Heaven, which is a stripped-down and haunting acoustic version with female vocals that gives the song a new dimension.

The album also features some other great tracks, such as Brutus’ rendition of The Ocean, which is a fun and catchy version of one of Led Zeppelin’s best songs from their best album, Houses Of The Holy. The Machine’s rendition of Nobody’s Fault But Mine, which is a solid and powerful version of one of Led Zeppelin’s more obscure songs that was inspired by Blind Willie Johnson. And Indian Jewelry’s take on Kashmir, which turns the epic song into a noisy and chaotic drone that challenges the listener.

The album also acknowledges some of the controversies surrounding Led Zeppelin’s plagiarism of other artists, such as Willie Dixon, Blind Willie Johnson and Spirit. However, this does not diminish the quality and brilliance of Led Zeppelin’s songs, nor the respect and admiration that these bands have for them. This album is a great tribute to Led Zeppelin, and a great album for fans of psychedelic rock who want to hear some different interpretations of their songs.

Ed Martin of Dazed & Confused described the album as "a mixed bag, like any compilation album would be, but never less than competent. The best tracks are the ones that have the confidence to take the originals in a radical new direction." (Amazon)
