If you are looking for an introduction to Chicago soul? This is it! The set's a totally cool 3xCD package, bound up in book-like format with great notes on the artists and songs, and a list of 64 tracks that give you a really great overview of the excellent soul that came out of Chicago during the 60s and 70s.
A collector's dream, but casual fans will look at the artists and tracks and say, "Huh?". This box set of Brunswick/Dakar/Chisound sides features obscure, non-charting, B-sides and album cuts by familiar and unfamiliar artists. The Chi-lites do four songs including "The Price of Love" as Marshall & the Chi-lites, their first record to play outside the greater Chicago area. Jackie Wilson does four unknown but pleasing tracks. Other notables include Lost Generation, Walter Jackson, Chuck Jackson, Major Lance, Erma Franklin, Lavern Baker, Barbara Acklin, and the Dells. Especially pleasing is Marvin Smith's solo side "Have More Time"; Smith sang lead with the Artistics who are on board for two songs. Also, the listing of tracks and artists involved is enormous, another feather in Westside Records' cap. (AMG review by Andrew Hamilton)
