VA - Jagged Time Lapse Vol. 1-5 [2000-2003] (5 x CDs)

Psychedelic Freakbeat from Great Britain

VA - Jagged Time Lapse Vol. 1-5 [2000-2003] (5 x CDs)

The Jagged Time Lapse series, issued privately between 2000 and 2003, is one of those collector‑driven anthologies that map the outer edges of psychedelic and underground rock with a focus that official labels rarely attempt. Across five volumes, all released as CDr, unofficial compilations , the series digs into obscure singles, album cuts, and regional pressings that shaped the more fractured, exploratory side of late‑sixties and early‑seventies music. The sequencing across the set favours mood and movement rather than chronology, creating a jagged, shifting picture of the era’s more adventurous corners.

The early volumes lean heavily on fuzz‑driven guitar pieces, minor‑key psych, and tracks built around loose, hypnotic rhythms. These are recordings made by bands working outside major‑label structures, often with limited studio time and a strong sense of experimentation. The sound is raw, immediate, and shaped by the imperfections that give underground music its character. As the series progresses, the selections broaden. Folk‑psych, proto‑hard rock, and more atmospheric material appear, giving the later volumes a wider tonal range without losing the rough edges that define the project.

Several inclusions stand out for their clarity and intent. Short, sharp garage‑psych tracks sit alongside longer, drifting pieces that favour texture over structure. The contrast between these approaches gives the series its name: a sense of time fractured, refracted, and stitched together through the lens of private‑press creativity. The compiler’s ear for sequencing keeps the flow intact even as the styles shift.

Jagged Time Lapse forms a portrait of underground music shaped by curiosity rather than commercial ambition. It preserves recordings that might otherwise remain scattered across forgotten pressings, presenting them as part of a larger, restless movement that pushed rock into stranger, more compelling shapes. VA - Tin Soldier's Children (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

BRITISH ROCK

VA - Tin Soldier's Children (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

Every collector eventually reaches the point where the obvious records are no longer enough. The familiar landmarks remain beloved, but curiosity starts to pull toward the side streets, the labels, the session players, the artists who seemed destined for greatness before slipping quietly through the cracks. This collection begins with one of the defining British singles of the 1960s, Small Faces' "Tin Soldier", then follows those side streets wherever they lead.

The years 1966 to 1969 produced a remarkable body of work that existed between categories. These records were too soulful for straightforward beat music, too aggressive for pop, and often too melodic to sit comfortably alongside the heavier psychedelic underground. Many were released on small labels, promoted briefly, then forgotten as fashions changed. Yet decades later they continue to reward repeated listening.

Immediate Records forms the backbone of the story. The label's adventurous approach allowed artists such as P.P. Arnold, Chris Farlowe, Billy Nicholls and The Nice to create records that sounded ambitious, emotional and distinctly British. Around them emerged a wider network of groups including The Action, The Attack, The End, Fleur de Lys and countless others, each pushing beyond the limitations of the three-minute single.

Rather than simply assembling rare tracks, this set attempts to recreate the atmosphere of the period. The sequence moves from mod soul and sharp R&B into increasingly colourful psychedelia, before arriving at the heavier sounds that would shape the next decade. Along the way are records that have become collector favourites, forgotten masterpieces and a handful of near-mythical releases whose reputations have only grown with time.

What unites them is not rarity but imagination. Whether commercially successful or overlooked on release, these recordings share a sense of possibility, a feeling that British pop music was expanding in every direction at once.

Tin Soldier's Children is not intended as a history lesson or a catalogue of rarities. It is a journey through a brief moment when imagination consistently outran expectation, and when some of the most creative music of the era emerged in places few people were looking. These recordings are the echoes of that moment, still vibrant, still surprising and still capable of opening new doors for those willing to follow the trail.

For listeners who have spent years exploring the world beyond the obvious classics, these four discs offer another journey through one of the richest and most creative periods in popular music.  (B)

VA - A World of Our Own, The UK & Irish Folk Explosion of 1965 (3 x CDs)

FOLK

VA - A World of Our Own, The UK & Irish Folk Explosion of 1965 (3 x CDs)

The set, released by Strawberry Records, gathers eighty‑six tracks that show how quickly the scene expanded once younger performers began blending inherited ballads with contemporary ideas. The anthology begins quietly, almost as if it is letting you step into the rooms where this music first took shape. Early tracks sit close to the bone, voices carrying traditional songs with a steadiness that reflects the folk clubs of the period. The sequencing keeps these roots in focus, allowing the listener to settle into the atmosphere before the set begins to widen. Nothing feels rushed. The first disc moves with the patience of musicians who understood that folk was built on memory, not momentum.

As the collection progresses, the tone shifts. Newer artists appear, bringing small but noticeable changes to the sound. A guitar line that leans toward pop, a vocal phrasing that hints at radio, a lyric that feels more contemporary than inherited. These touches arrive gradually, and the pacing lets them register without breaking the flow. The compilers shape the year as a slow expansion, showing how tradition and modern songwriting were beginning to share the same space. The contrast between older ballads and newer compositions becomes part of the pleasure, each track adding a different shade to the picture.

American voices drift in and out, not as interruptions but as reminders of how open the scene had become. Their presence adds a different texture, a sense of exchange rather than influence. You hear how London and Dublin were becoming meeting points for musicians carrying their own folk languages, and how those languages blended into something new.

By the final disc, the anthology feels settled. The year has unfolded in full, from club stages to chart‑minded singles, from inherited songs to fresh writing. The pacing remains gentle, the transitions thoughtful, and the overall shape invites you to hear 1965 as a moment when folk stepped forward with confidence, carrying its past while shaping its future. ROCK

VA - The Psychedelic Colours of 60's London [2006] (2 x CDs)

Issued in 2006 by Pazzazz, The Psychedelic Colours of 60's London surveys one of the most imaginative periods in British popular music. Drawing together well-known names and lesser-known discoveries, the collection captures the moment when London's musicians began pushing beyond the limits of conventional pop and into more adventurous territory.

What emerges is not a single style but a creative scene. Psychedelic pop, blues-rock, folk influences, ornate arrangements, and experimental studio techniques all appear throughout the set. Artists embraced new sounds, unusual instruments, and increasingly ambitious production methods while still retaining a strong sense of melody.

The collection benefits from its broad perspective. Alongside celebrated recordings by artists such as Small Faces, Donovan, The Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac, and Humble Pie are tracks from performers who never achieved the same level of recognition but contributed significantly to the era's restless creativity. Together they reveal a London music scene that was far deeper and more varied than the familiar psychedelic highlights alone might suggest.

Rather than presenting psychedelia as a collection of studio effects and colourful imagery, these recordings demonstrate how experimentation became woven into British songwriting itself. The result is a compilation that functions both as an enjoyable listen and as a snapshot of a remarkable cultural moment, when pop music expanded its horizons and London's artists helped redefine what popular music could be. Monty Python - Live at Drury Lane [1974]

The room comes first with Live at Drury Lane, the sound of an audience already in on the joke before a line is delivered. Recorded in 1974 by Monty Python, the album captures the group working in front of a theatre crowd, reshaping familiar material into something that moves differently on stage.

The pacing is tighter than the television sketches. Segments arrive quickly, land, and give way to the next without much pause. What changes is the energy. Lines that once played in controlled studio settings now pick up timing from the audience, reactions stretching or compressing the rhythm of each piece. The performances feel slightly looser, not in structure but in delivery.

Well-known sketches pass through, but they don’t sit as fixed versions. Dialogue shifts, emphasis changes, and the presence of the crowd becomes part of the performance itself. The group plays against that response, sometimes leaning into it, sometimes moving straight through.

Across the album, the sequence holds together through momentum rather than narrative. One piece leads directly into another, creating a continuous run rather than separate moments.

By the end, it feels less like a document of specific sketches and more like an evening preserved intact, shaped as much by the audience as by the performers on stage. (B)
