VA - The Ultimate Cajun Collection [1992] (2 x CDs)

CAJUN

VA - The Ultimate Cajun Collection [1992] (2 x CDs)

Issued jointly by La Louisianne Records and Disky Communications Europe B.V., The Ultimate Cajun Collection is a sprawling 2×CD compilation that distills the rhythmic heart of Cajun music into 50 carefully sequenced tracks. Released in 1992 for the UK and European market, this set draws from decades of Louisiana’s regional output, spotlighting both dancehall staples and lesser-known gems.

The compilation features a robust lineup of verified Cajun artists, including Rufus Thibodeaux, Aldus Roger, Nathan Abshire, Vin Bruce, and Blackie Forestier. Each disc offers 25 tracks, sequenced to evoke the flow of a live fais do-do—from two-steps and waltzes to swamp pop and accordion-led stompers. Notable inclusions like “Pine Grove Blues” (Nathan Abshire), “Grand Texas” (Aldus Roger), and “La Valse De Quebec” (Rufus Thibodeaux) anchor the set in tradition, while selections from Zachary Richard and Eddy Raven hint at the genre’s evolution into crossover territory.

The packaging includes silver discs with black print housed in a slim double jewel case, accompanied by an 8-page bilingual booklet (English and French) penned by Dave Travis. Liner notes provide historical context and artist highlights, making this release especially valuable for international collectors seeking a curated introduction to Cajun music’s emotional and rhythmic range.

Licensed from Ridgetop Music and manufactured in The Netherlands, this compilation stands out for its breadth and fidelity. It’s not a reissue of a prior LP series but a purpose-built anthology for the CD era, ideal for archivists and genre newcomers alike.

A genuine release that bridges cultures while preserving the pulse of Louisiana’s musical heritage. (B)

CAJUN

VA - Louisiana Cajun Music Special Vol. 1 & 2 [1987-1992] (2 x CDs)

Louisiana Cajun Music Special Vol. 1 & 2 offers a definitive two-disc snapshot of Cajun music’s postwar evolution, curated by Ace Records in partnership with Swallow Records. Volume 1 was released in 1987 followed by Volume 2 in 1992, both issued in the UK and sourced from Swallow’s deep Louisiana catalog of 45s and LPs spanning the 1960s and ’70s.

Volume 1 spans 22 tracks, opening with Nolan Cormier & The L.A. Aces’ Hee Haw Breakdown and rolling through foundational cuts by Nathan Abshire (Pine Grove Blues, Choupique Two-Step), Belton Richard (The Cajun Stripper), and the Balfa Brothers (Lacassine Special). These selections were sourced from Swallow and La Louisianne 45s and LPs, many of which were pressed in limited regional runs and are now prized by collectors. The mastering preserves the analog warmth of the original tapes, with stereo and mono transfers that retain their dancehall vitality.

Volume 2 expands the scope to 25 tracks, diving deeper into Swallow’s vault with rarities from Shirley Bergeron, Austin Pitre, Doris Matte, and Aldus Roger. Highlights include La Valse De Grand Bois, Hold My False Teeth (And I'll Show You How To Dance), and La Chanson D'Amitie by Phil Menard and Don Guillory with the Louisiana Travellers. The compilation balances marquee names with lesser-known but culturally vital artists, many of whom never saw national distribution.

Together, these volumes form a definitive sonic archive of Cajun music’s golden era. They preserve rare recordings that rarely surface outside Louisiana and present them with editorial clarity and historical care. (B)

VA - Acadian All Star Special, The Pioneering Cajun Recordings of J.D. Miller [2011]

CAJUN FOLK

VA - Acadian All Star Special, The Pioneering Cajun Recordings of J.D. Miller [2011]

A labor of love and a monument to exhaustive research, Bear Family's 2011 box set Acadian All Star Special: The Pioneering Cajun Recordings of J.D. Miller contains every recording Cajun music producer J.D. Miller cut between 1946 and 1959. This simple description downplays the effort behind this triple-disc box. It took considerable effort to document each of these tracks, and more still for Lyle Ferbrache to assemble the notes, but the end result winds up as a cornerstone of Cajun music.

Miller dove into Cajun music in earnest after Harry Choates’ recording of “Jole Blon” turned into a hit, starting to pursue a career as a producer in 1946 with his label Fais Do Do. Miller recorded Cajun and country acts at Cosimo Matasa's studio in New Orleans, eventually gaining some ground from his recordings with Happy Fats and Doc Guidry, commonly considered some of the great Cajun sides of all time. After World War II, there was a distinct lack of Cajun records and Miller set out to fill that gap, entering a golden era that this box ably documents. Here, it’s possible to hear Cajun turn modern partially through the records of Lee Sonnier, whose arrangements were more expansive, finding steel guitar and other honky tonk flair fitting the accordion-driven Cajun two-step. Miller’s next big star was Jimmy Newman, who veered a little closer to country than Cajun, a direction corrected by Chuck Guillory, who was more purely Cajun than Newman and who nevertheless sang with the fiddler.

Miller continued to find talent that straddled the line from Cajun to country, sometimes discovering singers like Terry Clement who could do both sides of the line, and if he never quite struck gold, what he wound up doing was establishing the sound and sensibility of recorded Cajun music. Certainly, this has been apparent in the decades that followed the music collected here, but no one set has ever rounded up all of his groundbreaking sides as Acadian All Star Special does. There may be a hint of musty academia to its presentation but given the effort behind this three-disc set, it’s only fair that the compilers feel the necessity to show their work. It is impressive and it winds up being one of the essential releases in Cajun and American mid-century roots music.

ZYDECO

VA - Beans Not Salty, Great Zydeco Music (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

"Zydeco" does have a meaning. It is believed to have originated from the French phrase "les haricots," which means "the beans." In Creole French, the phrase "les haricots sont pas salés" (the beans are not salty) was commonly used as a metaphor to describe a situation that is not going well or lacks excitement.  Over time, "les haricots" transformed into "zydeco" through a process of linguistic evolution and cultural influence. The term "zydeco" eventually became associated with the energetic and lively music that emerged in the Creole communities of Louisiana. It refers to a style of music characterized by its infectious rhythms and spirited performances.  So, while the term "zydeco" doesn't have a specific literal meaning, it has come to represent a vibrant musical genre deeply rooted in the cultural heritage and history of Louisiana's Creole communities.

Zydeco music is an exuberant and lively genre that originated in the Creole communities of southwest Louisiana. Drawing influences from traditional Louisiana Creole music, African rhythms, French folk music, blues, and rhythm and blues, Zydeco is a dynamic fusion of cultural elements.

At the heart of Zydeco is the accordion, which takes center stage, accompanied by a rhythmic ensemble featuring instruments like the rubboard (or "zydeco washboard"), drums, guitar, bass, and sometimes saxophone or other brass instruments. The accordion weaves vibrant and syncopated melodies, while the rhythm section provides an irresistible beat that compels people to dance.  Zydeco lyrics are often sung in Louisiana French or English, exploring themes of love, community, daily life, and cultural pride. The music's infectious rhythms, lively tempos, and the distinct sound of the accordion give Zydeco its unique and captivating character.

Zydeco music thrives in festive settings such as festivals, dance halls, and social gatherings, where people come together to revel in its energetic beats and participate in lively dances. The genre has gained popularity both within Louisiana and internationally, with notable artists like Clifton Chenier, Boozoo Chavis, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Terrance Simien becoming iconic figures in Zydeco music. (B)

Here are 63 tracks of artists playing Zydeco or Creole-style music that is infection and seriously danceable. Enjoy!

OLD NEW ORLEANS

VA - Louisiana & The Old New Orleans Sound [2012] (4 x CD's)

What a Great CD collection this is. 100 songs of the New Orleans sounds. I love this album. It starts with Mardi Gras Mambo, a favorite at Mardi Gras time. Then you get I Wish Someone Would Care, by The Royal Queen of New Orleans "Miss Irma Thomas". She is a true New Orleans Treasure alongside of the likes of Fats Domino, Al Hirt & Johnny Adams. You get more Irma Thomas & several Fats Domino along with Louisiana Man by Doug Kershaw. You just can't find songs like Breakin Up is Hard To Do, by Jivin' Gene & The Jokers, and Mhatilda by  Cookie & The Cupcakes. And so many more. (Amazon)
