VA - The Golden Age Of American Popular Music, Hits With Strings And Things [2009]

INSTRUMENTAL HITS

VA - The Golden Age Of American Popular Music, Hits With Strings And Things [2009]

The moment rock’n’roll was born, the major labels lost their grip on the market as numerous independent labels sprang up in every corner of America vying for a piece of the action in what became a commercial free-for-all.  For every small town rockabilly following in Elvis’ shadow, there was a doo wop group hoping to emulate the Platters or Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers and, for a brief, glorious moment, the music business looked to the sticks or inner city housing projects rather than to Tin Pan Alley for its raw material.

The one segment of the market where the majors were able to retain their dominance (and their dignity) was the orchestral or ‘easy’ format, populated by highly-schooled music men such as Andre Previn, Percy Faith and Billy Vaughn. These baton-wielders played a crucial role, arranging and conducting backgrounds for the era’s vocalists while often recording instrumentals in their own right. Their true metier lay in the album market which expanded rapidly with the advent of stereo recording in the late 1950s, though it was very often the kids who’d bought their hit 45's.

Here are the orchestral and ‘easy’ instrumental hits, both big and small – but mostly big – that helped define the Golden Age of Popular American Music, an era spanning, roughly, 1956-1967, when Billboard’s Hot 100 brimmed with an eclectic cornucopia of sounds and styles unlikely to be repeated in today’s age of corporate, socially engineered music production. An element of the post-modern ironic in our approach makes “Instrumental Hits With Strings & Things” extremely pleasing on the ear while avoiding the blandness that often characterises other releases in this genre. There is surprise and delight at every turn and just as many subtle mood changes. Many of the tunes feature strings or horns (or a combination of both) with intrusions from the occasional twangy guitar (‘Flying Circle’) or an ondioline, an experimental electronic keyboard (only 2000 were ever made) heard playing the lead lines on Kai Winding’s 1963 smash ‘More’. Bill Pursell’s mystical ‘Our Winter Love’ seems to transcend time and space – it’s a dream sequence set to music spun in gossamer sound.

MOJO rated “Instrumental Hits With Strings & Things” highly enough to award it 4-stars, describing some of the US-only hits (the majority) as "pleasantly alien". Three of the tunes, ‘Lost Love’, ‘Flying Circle’ and ‘Baby Elephant Walk’ appear on CD for the first time. Every selection has been mastered from tape, mostly stereo, and the muscular steroid-enhanced 28-page booklet bulges with period ephemera. The lowdown on each hit is from Rob Finnis who once led his own ‘easy’ outfit, the Marylebone Ensemble, whose radio hit, ‘Porcelain’ was covered by Sounds Orchestral. (Ace)

An absolutely wonderful compilation of popular instrumental recordings!

MILES DAVIS

Miles Davis - The Complete Blackhawk Sessions 1961 [2003] (6 x LP's)

The Complete Blackhawk Sessions, also called In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, Complete, is a 2003 6 x LP set released In conjunction with Sony, Mosaic Records. Simultaneous to this release, the material was made available as two separate double-albums, entitled Friday Night: In Person at the Blackhawk in San Francisco, Complete and Saturday Night: In Person at the Blackhawk in San Francisco, Complete and a four-disc collection of the 1961 live performances of the Miles Davis Quintet at the Black Hawk nightclub in San Francisco.

These sets, performed with recording in mind, forged new ground for jazz musician Miles Davis, who had never previously been recorded live in a club with his combo. Material from the four sets was first released simultaneously by Columbia Records on two albums in September 1961, titled In Person Friday Nights at the Blackhawk, San Francisco, Volume 1 and In Person Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, San Francisco, Volume 2. Although those albums were subsequently rereleased several times, the complete sets were not commercially available until Sony Records released a digital mastering of this collection.  The complete collection, which included liner notes from the original release by Monterey Jazz Festival co-founder Ralph J. Gleason as well as additional notes by jazz trumpeter Eddie Henderson, was critically and commercially well received. The collection peaked at #9 on Billboard's "Top Jazz Albums" chart. (Wikipedia)

In my opinion this is Miles best live album because of the selection and consistency of the songs. It is not "Kind of Blue" live, even though the band plays, for example "So What". Mobley, the sax player has a completely different vibe than Coltrane, who is not on this album. However, the rythmn section is incredibly tight and the sound quality is excellant. It really sounds like a band that knows exactly what its doing. The full set formats, on both nights, helps give insight as to what it must have been like to see Miles live.  This is a must have Miles Davis Live Box set. It's a mood setter and good hearing on a any day drive. I had to have it.  (Amazon)

K Tells Vol. 09

K Tells Vol. 09

K-tells -   Super 'Stars'!

Super Star Collection - 36 Original Hits - 36 Original Stars (K-tel TU 2810 USA - TC 248 CAN) (2021 Remastered Expanded Edition) (2CD) (1978)        This double album was originally released by K-tel in the USA and Canada in 1978. They each had different track listings. It was released on vinyl, 8-track tape and quite surprisingly on cassette - a first for a K-tel album in America!  Astonishingly, this 2CD collection contains 21 number 1 hits.  For this 2021 expanded edition I have selected the 44 very best tracks from both versions for a special 2CD set, and features all the original unedited 7" single mixes, including a few hard to find tracks. Fully remastered.

Disc 1 comprises of 22 of the very best song selections with a running time of 78:59 CD length.

Disc 2 comprises of 22 of the very best song selections with a running time of 77:30 CD length.

Star Party - 20 Original Hits - 20 Original Stars (K-tel NE 1034 UK) (2021 Remastered Edition) (1978)       Star Party was originally released by K-tel in the UK only in 1978 on vinyl and cassette. It was a big success, reaching #4 on the official albums chart on the 26th August 1978.  Featuring all the original unedited 7" single mixes, including a few hard to find tracks. Fully remastered with a new running time of 65:42 CD length.

Star Traks - 20 Original Hits (K-tel NE 1070 UK) (2022 Remastered Edition) (1980)        Star Traks was originally released by K-tel in the UK only in 1980 on vinyl and cassette. It was a big success, reaching #6 on the official albums chart on the 12th April 1980. Featuring all the original unedited 7" single mixes, including a few hard to find tracks. Fully remastered with a new running time of 77:25 CD length.

Enjoy!

K

Hi all down-loaders.

Just a gentle reminder to acknowledge K. who goes to a lot of effort to ensure you have a wonderful listening experience on these compilations. Very rarely do I see thanks to him for his genuine hard work and the time and effort to make 100% sure all tracks are the original 7” single edits and mixes featured on most of his album posts.   Let him know what you think of the albums, your thoughts on the sound quality, digital editing, consistent volume levels throughout, artwork and research, etc.  A message can always be sent  later, after listening to the shares. There is no time-limit on comments.

Please take that step further and thank K for these posts. Appreciated.

Cheers

LIMITED EDITION PSYCH

VA - The Psychedelic Experience  Vol. 01 - Vol. 04 [1996-2000] (4 x CD's)

The Psychedelic Experience series compilations consists of ultra rare 60's psychedelic and garage punk. Many of these songs are only available on this collection, and were pulled from various 45's released around the United States during the 60's garage band explosion. An extremely limited number of these vinyl records were pressed, and even fewer managed to survive. Although most of the bands on this compilation would go on to vanish into obscurity, these tracks still sound impressive after all these years. The Psychedelic Experience doesn't disappoint with it's assortment of straight forward monster garage fuzz rock and roll. (Amazon)

This is all high-quality, authentic US & British psych garage from the 1960's. Some amazing tracks appear on these CD's, songs that you want to revisit time and time again. Enjoy!

Cherry Red Records has gathered the six studio and two live LP’s, supplemented by twenty six single sides, in a new eight disc box set on the label’s Esoteric Recordings imprint.

Steppenwolf was formed in 1967 in LA by John Kay (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Goldy McJohn (organ, piano) and Jerry Edmonton (drums) who were previously members of the Canadian band The Sparrows. They were joined by Michael Monarch (lead guitar) and Rushton Moreve (bass). The band signed to Dunhill/ABC the same year and with producer Gabriel Mekler they recorded their self-titled debut album. The band were propelled to success with their classic single ‘Born To Be Wild’ (a #2 hit in the USA) and became even wider known when the track was featured, along with their version of ‘The Pusher’ in the classic 1969 counterculture film Easy Rider.

‘The Second’ was released in October ‘68 and featured the hit single ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ (another US #2 hit). In March ‘69 ‘At Your Birthday Party’ was released to further success and was their first record to feature Nick St Nicholas on bass and their last to feature Michael Monarch. The July 1969 release ‘Early Steppenwolf’ featured live recordings made at The Matrix in San Francisco in May 1967 and featured a 20-minute version of ‘The Pusher’. The band’s next studio album, ‘Monster’, was issued in November 1969 and dealt with America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. 1970 saw the band release two albums, the double LP ‘Steppenwolf Live’ and ‘Steppenwolf 7’. By the release of the latter the band’s popularity began to wain slightly, although they would retain a large and loyal fan base. Their November 1971 album ‘For Ladies Only’ was their last for Dunhill/ABC and Steppenwolf disbanded in February 1972 only to reform in 1974.

Steppenwolf has long been poorly represented in the digital world, but that has finally been rectified here by Cherry Red Records. The ABC / Dunhill catalog has now been beautifully remastered, and placed within a lovely clamshell box. Each album is contained in a cardboard cover replicating the original album artwork, and all but one of these eight discs include bonus tracks. The sound quality is absolutely spectacular, and if you already own any of the previously released versions on CD, then you’re going to want to upgrade to this set. The difference in quality is staggering. There has been several bands on the ABC / Dunhill label that had their master tapes lost or destroyed over the years, but fortunately Steppenwolf weren’t one of them. So this set was transferred from those master tapes, and the results are truly amazing. If you’re a fan, then I highly recommend grabbing this before it goes out of print for a second time.

Steppenwolf were definitely one of the most important bands from the late sixties and early seventies, and they’ve finally been given the treatment they so obviously deserve. .... from the band that set the standard for hard rock before there was hard rock. (Amazon)

VA - Superbad Funk & Cinematic Soul [2006] (2 x CD's)

Funktastic 28 track, 2 x CD collection of Soul and Funk tracks taken from the blaxploitation films of the 70's as well as songs used in TV shows during the same era  ...as if watching and reliving scenes in these films while bopping up and down. Hypnotic rhythms from masters from various musical backgrounds.  An enjoyable collection. Among the funk and soul of Isaac Hayes,James Brown Curtis Mayfield and Rose Royce are the themes to the Sweeney, the Prisoner and the Pink Panther. There's a few things on this that have been on other compilations, but there's also some rarer things from Edwin Starr,Mavis Staples,Tom Scott and Charles Earland that make it worth Owning.
