Michael Eugene Archer (February 11, 1974 – October 14, 2025), better known by his stage name D'Angelo, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. Widely regarded as a pioneer of the neo-soul movement, Billboard named him one of the greatest R&B artists, while Rolling Stone magazine ranked him as one of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2025, he was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.

He first gained attention after co-writing and co-producing the 1994 single "U Will Know" by the R&B supergroup Black Men United. His debut album, Brown Sugar (1995), was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and received widespread acclaim from music critics, who have credited the album with ushering in the neo-soul movement. It featured the title track, the Smokey Robinson cover "Cruisin", and "Lady", which peaked within the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100.

D'Angelo then collaborated with artists such as Angie Stone, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill, with whom he performed on the 1998 song "Nothing Even Matters" from her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. His next album, Voodoo (2000), debuted at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and received widespread critical acclaim. It was also certified platinum by RIAA. Its third single "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" was released alongside an impactful music video. The song earned him the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, while the album itself won Best R&B Album. Voodoo was listed as 28th on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Afterwards, D'Angelo became increasingly uncomfortable with his growing status as a sex symbol. He then had numerous personal struggles, including depression, drug addiction and alcoholism, which resulted in limited musical output for several years. After over a decade spent mostly out of the public eye, he released his third and final album, Black Messiah (2014). The album debuted in the top five of the U.S. Billboard 200 and topped the year-end Pazz & Jop critics' poll by The Village Voice. It won Best R&B Album at the 58th Grammy Awards, while the single "Really Love" won Best R&B Song and was nominated for Record of the Year. He also contributed the song "Unshaken" to the 2018 video game Red Dead Redemption 2.

My year 2000 was shaped, in many ways, by D’Angelo. That was the year I discovered Voodoo—an album I still return to with pleasure—and the year I had the chance to see him live at the Grand Rex in Paris. It’s an intimate, human‑scale venue, the kind that lets you truly measure an artist’s presence. His performance left me speechless, and it made it easy to compare him to another performer I’ve always admired: Prince.

D’Angelo left us far too soon, and his recent passing only deepens the imprint he has made on the history of soul and R&B. A few aspects of his talent stand out to me.

A singular voice and sensitivity

D’Angelo possessed a supple, warm voice—carefully honed yet never artificial—capable of shifting between the precision of a classic soul singer and the textured grain of a more raw, embodied vocalist. People have rightly described it as “raspy yet smooth.” But beyond timbre, what mattered was how he used it: he didn’t simply sing; he inhabited a deep emotional register—gospel, desire, melancholy, groove. Drawing on his roots in Richmond, Virginia, and on the Black American soul tradition, he infused that heritage with unmistakable modernity.

Remarkable instrumentation and groove

D’Angelo was far more than a singer. He played multiple instruments, composed, arranged, and produced. His music embraced funk, jazz, hip‑hop, and gospel—an audacious hybrid in the mid‑1990s, especially on landmark albums like Brown Sugar (1995) and Voodoo (2000). His tracks breathe: prominent bass lines, organic arrangements, grooves that move with human elasticity, and a masterful use of silence and space. This stood in stark contrast to the more polished, formulaic R&B productions of the era. His sound carried vulnerability, humanity.

Bringing “true” soul into the modern era

At a time when the soul of the ’60s and ’70s was revered but often treated as untouchable, D’Angelo revitalized that lineage by anchoring it in the cultural and sonic context of the 1990s. Blending hip‑hop sensibilities with a contemporary attitude, he became one of the defining pioneers of neo‑soul.

Commitment and conceptual ambition

His album Black Messiah (2014) stands as a testament to his maturity and artistic conviction—not only musically, but thematically. Its political and social resonances show that his contribution wasn’t limited to making great‑sounding music; he made music that mattered.

Minimalism, density, and a breathing groove

His compositions drew their power not from excess but from subtlety: grounded rhythms, slight tempo shifts, controlled silences. These elements give his work an almost mystical aura within soul music and opened a path for many artists who followed.

His legacy, what he leaves behind

Even with only three major studio albums (Brown Sugar, Voodoo, Black Messiah), D’Angelo has left a lasting mark on the musical landscape. His influence is felt in vocal phrasing, in production aesthetics, and in the idea that soul is not a museum piece but a living, evolving territory. He proved that an artist can remain demanding, resist commercial standardization, and still reach a wide audience. His ability to fuse heritage with innovation makes him a bridge between generations.

D’Angelo was an artist of immense stature because he possessed an exceptional voice and sensitivity, a razor‑sharp sense of groove and instrumentation, and above all a renewed vision of soul—deeply respectful of its roots yet fully attuned to the contemporary world. Supertramp were a British rock band formed in London in 1970. Marked by the individual songwriting of founders Roger Hodgson (vocals, keyboards and guitars) and Rick Davies (vocals and keyboards), the group were distinguished for blending progressive rock and pop styles. The classic lineup, which lasted ten years from 1973 to 1983, consisted of Davies, Hodgson, Dougie Thomson (bass), Bob Siebenberg (drums) and John Helliwell (saxophone), after which the group's lineup changed numerous times, with Davies being the only constant member throughout its history.

Supertramp found no success with their first two albums, but after a lineup change into what became their classic lineup, their third album, Crime of the Century (1974), was their breakthrough. Initially a more experimental prog-rock group, they began moving towards a more pop-oriented sound with the album. The band reached their commercial peak with 1979's Breakfast in America, which yielded the international top 10 singles "The Logical Song", "Breakfast in America", "Goodbye Stranger" and "Take the Long Way Home". Their other top 40 hits included "Dreamer" (1974), "Give a Little Bit" (1977) and "It's Raining Again" (1982).

In 1982 Supertramp released ...Famous Last Words..., the last album to feature Hodgson, who left in 1983 to pursue a solo career. The band continued with Davies as the sole leader and released two more albums until 1988. After this, they disbanded for a time and periodically reformed in various configurations (always with Davies, and without Hodgson), recording and touring two further albums, Some Things Never Change (1997) and Slow Motion (2002).

Supertramp attained significant popularity in North America, Europe, South Africa, and Australia. Their highest sales levels were in Canada, where they had two diamond-certified (ten-times platinum) albums (Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America), and their only number one singles anywhere ("The Logical Song" and "Dreamer") aside from "It's Raining Again" which reached number one in France. As of 2007, Supertramp album sales exceeded 60 million.

In 1979, at the time Logical Song/Goodbye Stranger exploded in Europe, I was only 12 years old, and I was then discovering, in successive waves of listening, the new Anglo-Saxon pop-rock on the radios in the main waves of the time: RTL and Europe 1 in particular. I opened up at that time to the "adult" pop of Supertramp, Dire Straits, Billy Joel, Steely Dan or Paul Simon. 

The subsequent bombardment of It's Raining Again or Cannonball frankly distanced me from the group, while at the same time I was discovering with a ferocious appetite the new wave of the fashionable quartet Cure/Depeche Mode/U2/Simple Minds. 

Today, after the death of Rick Davies, I wanted to take stock of this group. I discovered a near-perfect band in the 70s, up to Famous Last Words. Then it really goes downhill, apart from an honest "Some things never change" (1997). I added quite a few excerpts from Roger Hodgson's good discography. 

Was he the real melodist of the band? The question is asked, I would tend to answer in the affirmative. 

I wish you lots of good discoveries. I had fun putting these tracks together.

Once again, I realize the immense happiness and satisfaction of having lived, even from afar, these wonderful 70s years, which give me, with each passing day, intense discoveries and constantly renewed pleasures.

David Sylvian, born David Alan Batt on 23 February 1958, is an influential English musician, singer, and songwriter. He gained fame in the late 1970s as the front man and principal songwriter of the band Japan. With their androgynous look and increasingly electronic sound, Japan became a significant influence on the UK's early-1980s new wave scene.

After Japan disbanded, Sylvian launched his solo career with the album Brilliant Trees (1984). His solo work, described by AllMusic as "far-ranging and esoteric," includes collaborations with renowned artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp, Holger Czukay, Jon Hassell, Bill Nelson, and Fennesz. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Sylvian's recordings encompassed a blend of art rock, pop, jazz fusion, avant-garde experimentalism, and ambient music. In recent years, his compositions have increasingly drawn on musical minimalism and free improvisation.

As an admirer of David Sylvian, I consider him a first-rate singer-songwriter. Albums like Secrets of the Beehive (1987) hold a special place among the best pop/rock albums in my imaginary world top chart. Sylvian's artistic journey has parallels with that of Mark Hollis from Talk Talk. Both artists started with more commercial sounds—neo-romantic for Talk Talk and glam for Japan—before gradually transitioning towards abstraction. Their solo careers eventually led them to explore improvised neo-classicism (Hollis) and refined ambient music (Sylvian).

Although I haven't always been able to keep up with Sylvian's diverse and evolving career, I've tried to give you a glimpse of his world by associating him with artists who share his aesthetic. I hope you enjoy listening to this compilation as much as I enjoyed putting it together. If you want to delve deeper into David Sylvian's work, you can start with his first group, Japan, and then explore his solo career, including side projects Rain Tree Crow and Nine Horses. Serge Gainsbourg (2 April 1928 - 2 March 1991) was a French singer-songwriter, actor, composer, and director. Regarded as one of the most important figures in French pop, he was renowned for often provocative releases which caused uproar in France, dividing public opinion. His artistic output ranged from his early work in jazz, chanson, and yé-yé to later efforts in rock, zouk, funk, reggae, and electronica. Gainsbourg's varied musical style and individuality make him difficult to categorise, although his legacy has been firmly established and he is often regarded as one of the world's most influential popular musicians.

His lyrical works incorporated wordplay, with humorous, bizarre, provocative, sexual, satirical or subversive overtones. Gainsbourg wrote over 550 songs, which have been covered more than 1,000 times by diverse artists. Since his death from a second heart attack in 1991, Gainsbourg's music has reached legendary stature in France. While controversial in his lifetime, he has become one of France's best-loved public figures. He has also gained a cult following all over the world with chart success in the United Kingdom and Belgium with "Je t'aime... moi non plus" and "Bonnie and Clyde", respectively.

Since his death, Gainsbourg's music has reached legendary stature in France. In his native country, artists like the bands Air, Stereolab and BB Brunes (who named themselves after Gainsbourg's song "Initials B.B."), singers Benjamin Biolay, Vincent Delerm, Thomas Fersen and Arthur H have cited him as an influence. He has also gained a following in the English-speaking world from artists like Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, Beck, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys, Portishead, Massive Attack, Mike Patton of Faith No More and Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy.Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds guitarist Mick Harvey has recorded four cover albums sung in English and he is referenced by name in the song "Aloo Gobi" by American rock band Weezer. Gainsbourg's music has been sampled by several hip hop artists, including songs by Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Busta Rhymes and MC Solaar.

The Parisian house in which Gainsbourg lived from 1969 until 1991, at 5 bis Rue de Verneuil, remains a celebrated shrine, with his ashtrays and collections of various items, such as police badges and bullets, intact. The outside of the house is covered in graffiti dedicated to Gainsbourg, as well as with photographs of significant figures in his life, including Bardot and Birkin. In 2008, Paris' Cité de la Musique held the Gainsbourg 2008 exhibition, curated by sound artist Frédéric Sanchez.

Gainsbourg has been described as an unlikely sex symbol and fashion icon, noted for his sharp suits, white Repetto shoes, double-denim, green United States Army shirts and pinstripe jackets.

Comic artist Joann Sfar wrote and directed the biographical film of his life Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) (2010). Gainsbourg is portrayed by Eric Elmosnino as an adult and Kacey Mottet Klein as a child. Some tributes are more tenuous than others, but the essential thing is to note that the singer-songwriter experienced a real resurgence in popularity after his death in 1991, with an audience of musicians including Beck, Pulp or Massive Attack. For those who would like to be interested in Serge Gainsbourg, I advise them to start by listening to his most dissected album among Anglo-Saxons, L’Histoire de Melody Nelson (1971), then to continue with his albums from the end of the 60s, marked by Carnaby Street and psychedelism: Bonnie and Clyde (1968), Initials B.B (1968) and Jane Birkin - Serge Gainsbourg (1969).
