VA - Decameron, Ten Days In 100 Novellas, Parts 1-3 [2011-2016] (12 CDs)

PROGRESSIVE FOLK ROCK

VA - Decameron, Ten Days In 100 Novellas, Parts 1-3 [2011-2016] (12 CDs)

Released between 2011 and 2016 through the ongoing collaboration between the Finnish progressive-rock collective Colossus, Musea Records, Seacrest Oy, and Visual Power, the three volumes of Decameron, Ten Days In 100 Novellas form an extraordinary twelve-disc exploration of progressive folk, acid folk, pastoral psychedelia, underground pop, and progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and the wider progressive underground.

Taking inspiration from Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, a collection of interconnected stories told over ten days, the series approaches compilation-making as a narrative art, where each track contributes to a larger journey of discovery.

Rather than relying on obvious classics, the compilers balance recognised artists with forgotten albums, private-press rarities, and overlooked recordings. Familiar names provide occasional landmarks, but the real pleasure lies in the unexpected connections that emerge between tracks. Songs separated by years, countries, or styles often feel as though they belong in the same conversation, linked by mood, imagination, and a shared spirit of exploration.

Acoustic folk melodies, intricate vocal harmonies, progressive arrangements, and psychedelic textures appear throughout the set. Mellotrons drift through pastoral landscapes, acoustic guitars intertwine with chamber-pop flourishes, and moments of quiet reflection give way to passages of musical adventure. The sequencing is central to the experience. Each disc unfolds with patience, allowing contrasts and relationships to reveal themselves naturally rather than announcing them outright.

What ultimately distinguishes Decameron is its ability to create a world rather than simply document a genre. The music evokes landscapes, stories, seasons, and states of mind, drawing the listener into an alternative history of the progressive underground. Across twelve discs, the collection rewards curiosity and attentive listening, demonstrating how thoughtful curation can transform individual recordings into something greater than the sum of their parts. Rich in atmosphere, musical invention, and discovery, Decameron stands as a remarkable achievement in the art of compilation. (B)

VA - Time Machine A Vertigo Retrospective [2005] CD1 + CD2 + CD3

VERTIGO RETROSPECTIVE

VA - Time Machine A Vertigo Retrospective [2005] CD1 + CD2 + CD3

Whoever signed bands for Vertigo back in the late 60s and early 70s had incredible discretion and good taste. Colloseum, Atlantis, Cresseda, and Yes, even the mighty Sabbath made some fantastically advanced music, sampled on Time Machine.

This boxset really is a Time Machine: No Demographics, no labels, no test-marketing, no boundaries. Rock, Jazz, Classical and Blues are all molded by each band on this set, but in ways very unique to each band. The idea in music then was to outdo the other bands, but by doing something very different, and doing it very well. You will never mistake one band or another here. You will also find very little self-indulgence or meandering in any of this music. This music is "prog" defined by jazz and blues, not quasi-classical jazz.

Time Machine is a fascinating look at an equally fascinating time in music, containing 41 tracks from the first golden age of the Vertigo label including rare and classic tracks from the likes of Aphrodite's Child, Black Sabbath, Colosseum, Gentle Giant, Jade Warrior and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.  Whether you are a fan of Psychedelia or Prog Rock, there's something here to excite your senses.  A vital collection that rightfully takes its place next to other classic compilations like "Nuggets", "Atlantic Gold" or "Freakbeat Scene". Jethro Tull - Gift of Roses, Underrated Jethro Tull (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3 REPOST

JETHRO TULL

Jethro Tull - Gift of Roses, Underrated Jethro Tull (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3       REPOST

Jethro Tull are a British rock band formed in Blackpool, Lancashire, in 1967. Initially playing blues rock and jazz fusion, the band later developed their sound to incorporate elements of hard rock and folk to forge a progressive rock signature. The band is led by vocalist/flautist/guitarist Ian Anderson, and has featured a revolving door of lineups through the years including significant members such as guitarists Mick Abrahams and Martin Barre, keyboardists John Evan and Dee Palmer, drummers Clive Bunker, Barriemore Barlow, and Doane Perry, and bassists Glenn Cornick, Jeffrey Hammond, John Glascock, and Dave Pegg.

The group first achieved commercial success in 1969, with the folk-tinged electric blues album Stand Up, which reached No. 1 in the UK, and they toured regularly in the UK and the US. Their musical style shifted in the direction of progressive rock with the albums Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972) and A Passion Play (1973), and shifted again to hard rock mixed with folk rock with Songs from the Wood (1977) and Heavy Horses (1978). After an excursion into electronic rock in the early-to-mid 1980s, the band won its sole Grammy Award with the 1987 album Crest of a Knave. Jethro Tull have sold an estimated 60 million albums worldwide, with 11 gold and five platinum albums among them. They have been described by Rolling Stone as "one of the most commercially successful and eccentric progressive rock bands".

Jethro Tull have always been an interesting and complex band. The classic Tull music is progressive rock, flute, rapid changes of cadence, acoustic guitar, rock guitar and vocals, at once loud and happy and mischievous, then soft with a threatening undercurrent. The unique and rewarding music of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull have been recording and performing (with varying degrees of success!) over the past almost 40 years. Ian Anderson's songs and arrangements were always irreverent, iconoclastic, and innovative . I especially like the way he uses the combination of classical instruments, and juxtaposes them with rip-roaring rock instruments like drums, basses, and virtuoso electric guitar work. I love this band and never seem to get tired of listening to them. One of the most unique and individual styles in rock history. They've played in so many genres that they completely defy categorization.  (Wikipedia)

I love the sound of Jethro Tull and always find their music rewarding. You can pick up any of their albums and find something great to listen to. Here are 76 Tracks that  I consider underrated tracks. Enjoy!

VA - Progressive Folk Vol. 03 (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

PROGRESSIVE FOLK

VA - Progressive Folk Vol. 03 (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Progressive Rock, not to be mistaken for the Folk Rock of the 1960s, a Folk revival started on both sides of the Atlantic, that got quickly linked with a protest movement, not always, but often linked to more left-wing tendencies, which did not sit well with the authorities. With their delicious harmonies, Folk Rock was appealing only to the rock public as older generations turned their backs in folkies.

However, a real turning point album that led to further change of Folk Rock is Fairport Convention's "Liege & Lief" album, that proved to be highly influential for another generation of groups: this album concentrated into electrifying seminal English traditional folk and retained that quaint Englishness taste. It is interesting to see that both leaders of Fairport Convention quit the band after this success to go their respective ways.  By this time, most connoisseurs were talking of Acid Folk, Psych Folk, and Progressive Folk, all having limited differences and no particularly drawn-out limits or boundaries, but all relying on experimental or groundbreaking adventures and good musicianship but not necessarily of an acoustic nature. Those who were out to break new ground (but with less commercial success as their predecessors) started turning records more and more axed towards fusing jazz and folk, others became more and more electric, and they started to be referred to as Singer Songwriters especially those with country rock influences. There is also a very important medieval music influences dimension in some groups as the term Medieval Folk was also mentioned for a while but apparently dropped by musicologists.  Many European bands took folk rock to a higher level and combined music that was folky, experimental and progressive. I aways wonder if the English bands cherry picked from the European progressive rock scene or visa versa. Probably a bit of both.

Many Progressive Rock bands/artists incorporated Folk music in their compositions. Some are amazingly good and it's a pity that they don't get heard all that often.  This compilation concentrates on Progressive Rock music with a Folk sound from around the globe from the last 5 decades that is captivating and as well as enjoyable.

This is Volume 3 of a 3 Volume set. Enjoy!

PROGRESSIVE FOLK

VA - Progressive Folk Vol. 02 (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

This is Volume 2 of a 3 Volume set. Enjoy!
