READERS POLL #03 MESSAGE UPDATE 2

READERS POLL #03 MESSAGE

Thanks to all for your recent submissions. Some great and interesting choices so far.

Please remember that you are to offer songs that have not been included in the three volumes I presented previously. The Track Lists is visible at the bottom of this page. I will not include them if they are received.

VA - READERS POLL Greatest Closing Album Tracks

It has been quite a while since I last did a Readers Poll.

After the success of the "And In The End...Great Closing Tracks" series I presented recently, I receive many suggestions for what would be considered the Greatest album closing track from visitors and that I haven't included in the 3 volumes I posted.

The art of album sequencing is an ephemeral thing. Figuring out the strongest way to begin an album can be a challenge, but to decide the proper way to conclude a group of songs is equally important. A great album can finish any number of ways, with a slow, quiet, mellow, meditative and somber farewell, on a powerful epic that goes out with a bang.  Do you remember when the last track on an album would finish, and you’d wish the music would just never end?   An album's closing track is almost as essential as the opening one. Just as an album's opening song plays a pivotal part in a record's cycle, the closing track serves a similar and not totally unrelated purpose. The final song is a summation of an album's musical and thematic themes, a final word on what we just listened to. A closing track can be some of the biggest highlights on an album where many artists offered up their best for last. A closing number can leave you exhilarated and wanting more, or it can be the sign of what's coming next.

Here is a new opportunity for you to add your own thoughts about music. Previous READERS POLLS have been fun, and the results have been rewarding.

I am very interested in what others would choose as the GREATEST CLOSING TRACK, one that meets the criteria above.

I guess some may need to think about what song you would choose. Therefore, I am keeping the responses timeline open for two weeks. The closing date for receiving your selections will be two weeks from today on 18th September 2022 to 2nd October 2022.

I only have these simple requests.

  • Please identify 2 songs each ONLY Each. (Knowing that we all have different musical preferences, any genre will be acceptable.)
  • Name the Album it is from, it's genre and the year it was released.

Please send all submissions to   BUTTER2020ap@proton.me

Please NOTE: I will not be sharing your email address and will delete them once I have your selections.

Here is a template to make life easier.

https://krakenfiles.com/view/2VaOrbLOsn/file.html

After your choices have been received, I will collate and create a set of CD's to reflect your choices.  This is potentially a huge project so it may take a little while to complete.  I am sure the results will be rewarding.

I hope you will have fun offering your choices.

Enjoy!

VA - 100 Popcorn Classics [2009] (5 x CD's)

POPCORN

VA - 100 Popcorn Classics [2009] (5 x CD's)

Popcorn (sometimes Belgian popcorn or oldies popcorn) is a style of music and dancing first established in Belgium in the 1970's and 1980's. The style includes a wide variety of mostly American and British recordings of pop-soul music made between the late 1950's and mid 1960's, often relatively obscure, and characterized by a slow or medium, rather than fast, tempo. The style has been described by musician and writer Bob Stanley as "possibly the last truly underground music scene in Europe."

According to Stanley, "the purity of Belgian Popcorn is its very impurity. R&B, Broadway numbers, tangos, Phil Spector-esque girl groups and loungey instrumentals, they are all constituent parts of a rare, and still largely undiscovered scene." By the 1990's, the Popcorn dance scene retained a core of aficionados even outside Belgium, having a level of recognition in venues and specialist clubs in Britain, Germany, and the US, with at least 30 compilations of American R&B and pop music in the Belgian Popcorn style being re-issued in Europe.

The Popcorn music scene first developed from dances held at the Groove discotheque in Ostend, where mid-tempo soul and ska music played by DJ Freddy Cousaert became popular in the late 1960's. Cousaert was later responsible for Marvin Gaye's move to Belgium in the early 1980's.  In September 1969, a café, De Oude Hoeve, opened in a converted farm barn at Vrasene near Antwerp, and began holding dance competitions on Sunday afternoons. Soon up to 3,000 people began attending each week, dancing in a "slow swing" style to soul and funk records. The café was renamed the Popcorn – after the James Brown hit "The Popcorn"—and DJ Gilbert Govaert began playing more early soul and other records from the 1960's to suit the dance style. According to Stanley: "The beat was slow and slightly rickety, martial drums rolled under melancholy minor chords—the Marvelettes' 'Please Mr Postman' (1961) would have been typical."  Following the Popcorn club's popularity, other clubs sprang up playing music in a similar style. These included the Festival in Antwerp, the Gatsby in Vliermaal, and the Versailles, beside the beach at Ostend. As well as Cousaert and Govaert, other leading DJs included Jeff Callebaut, Gerry Franken, and Georges Toniotti. Radio stations were set up to play the music, and rare music on obscure labels became especially prized. The scene in Belgium, in many ways, paralleled the Northern soul scene in Britain, but with a slower swing style of music favoured, rather than the fast dance styles characteristic of Northern soul. In some cases, DJs slowed down records, by pitch control and by playing 45 rpm discs at 33 rpm, to achieve the desired tempo and rhythm. The range of the music also broadened, to include some British and Italian pop music from the early 1960's, and eventually local bands were formed to emulate the style. (Wikipedia)

 JERRY LEE LEWIS

Jerry Lee Lewis - The Complete Jerry Lee Lewis on Sun [2022] (5 x CD's)

If rock’n’roll was a person, it would be Jerry Lee Lewis. Back in 1957, when Jerry Lee Lewis exploded on radio and jukeboxes with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” and “Great Balls of Fire,” rock’n’roll was brand new, young and wild, loud and dangerous. The same could be said of Jerry Lee. Jerry Lee was in Louisiana when he heard Elvis and Carl Perkins and knew he had to get to Memphis and Sam Phillips, Aman he thought would understand his music. He was right. When Sam heard that wild, free spirit with a no holds barred piano pounding style, he put a microphone in front of him and turned on the recording machine. In this collection, you will hear all of the songs that Jerry Lee Lewis recorded for Sun Records, including those that were never released when he was on Sun. You can hear the piano rumble from Jerry Lee’s left hand and feel the wild, manic energy pulsing through the studio as he sang and played. Jerry Lee’s single, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” entered the Billboard country chart on June 17, 1957, the Hot 100 a week later and the R&B chart on August 19. It reached number one on the country chart (for two weeks), number three on the Hot100 and number one on the R&B chart. The next single, “Great Balls of Fire,” also released in 1957, reached number one on the country chart, number two on the Hot 100 and number three on the R&B chart. Nobody had heard anything like it and those who went to see Jerry Lee perform had never seen anything like him. He was a Louisiana Wild Man set loose and everything he did, said, sang or played screamed ROCK’N’ROLL! Listening to these songs, recorded over a seven-year period, you can hear the roots of rock’n’roll. The early rockabilly performers were considered country at the beginning, and you hear a strong dose of country when Jerry Lee played—he covered Jimmy Rodgers, Hank Williams and country hits. You hear him play R&B from Ray Charles and The Drifters. And you hear him play pop hits like “Near You” and “Love Letters In the Sand.” But Jerry Lee did not simply cover a song, he took a song and made it his own, no matter where it came from. No matter who wrote a song, when Jerry Lee played it, it became a Jerry Lee Lewis song. There are few performers who are that original. Rock’n’roll during the 1950s was a mixture of something old, something new, something borrowed and some blues. You’ll hear that spectrum in this Complete Jerry Lee Lewis set. During the 1950s, rock’n’roll was a teenager’s first love. It was a music that excited them, moved them and gave them a music of their own—stupendously different from their parent’s music. It was a music that grabbed the heart, moved the feet and changed the world. Listening to rock’n’roll was a rite of passage for teenagers in the 1950s, a baptism of freedom for a youth rebellion. Sun Records in Memphis, led by Sam Phillips, was the birthplace of rock’n’roll and Jerry Lee Lewis was a favorite son. (Amazon)
