VA - The A to Z of Australian Rock (A Butterboy Compilation) (22xCD's) PART 4 D + E

AUSTRALIAN ROCK

VA - The A to Z of Australian Rock (A Butterboy Compilation) (22xCD's)

Most of the tracks chosen for this compilation are related to an artist’s first single. Where possible I have included the first single A or B side. Where these were not available I have included the album track which became a first single or an early single. The mix of tracks is thrilling. You may discover hard to find singles and/or hear a side of a band you may not have heard before. The acts are presented in alphabetic order and by year released.

I will share these in Parts (3 parts per week until completed).  I hope you have fun digging through the 714 track that make up this compilation.

VA - Inner City Sound, Australian Punk And Post Punk [2005] CD1+CD2

AUSTRALIAN PUNK & POST PUNK

VA - Inner City Sound, Australian Punk And Post Punk [2005] CD1+CD2

Compiled and released by Laughing Outlaw in 2005, Inner City Sound is a 2CD set stand-alone companion piece to the cult book of the same name. Produced and annotated by Clinton Walker. For people who were there, somewhere between 1975 and 1984, or those who have rediscovered this era of great music.

This CD contains great Australian indie/alternative music that was either financed by the bands themselves or by some of the ground breaking, risk taking small record businesses of this time. Inner City Sound describes the years 1976-1981 of punk/post-punk music in Australia. The Inner City Sound is a distinct movement towards an Australian rock of its own invention and identity.” (Clinton Walker, from his book of the same name, originally published by Wild & Woolley Pty Ltd 1982.)

Inner City Sound provides proof positive that Australia contributed as much as anyone to the D-I-Y revolution of the late 70's, early 80's. Over forty tracks, restored to glory, that still ring fresh and true, a mix of classics and rarities, many appearing on CD for the first time. Bristling with urgency and originality, this is an instant classic twenty years in the making.  (laughingoutlaw.com.au)

MUSIC MOVIE 1 - Ella Fitzgerald - Just One of Those Things

MUSIC MOVIE  DOCUMENTARY 1

On the last day of each Month I plan to upload a music video. Here is the first...

Ella Fitzgerald - Just One of Those Things [2019]

Ella Fitzgerald was a 15 year-old street kid when she won a talent contest in 1934 at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Within months she was a star. “Ella: Just One of Those Things” follows her extraordinary journey over six decades as her sublime voice transforms the tragedies of her own life and the troubles of her times into joy. The film uses never-before-seen images and unheard interviews to bring Ella Fitzgerald to life and to tell the story of her music. - a black woman who makes her career in the face of horrifying racism. Here is an Ella the world never knew – tough, thoughtful, funny, a dazzling musical innovator. The film also uncovers Ella’s commitment to the battle for Civil Rights; and it explores the conflicts that always haunted this intensely private woman: the struggle to reconcile her hunger for adoring audiences with her longing for a domestic life with her husband and son. At a time when she was the biggest singing star in the world, her pianist and friend Oscar Peterson said Ella was “the loneliest woman in the world”. But as Jamie Cullum says “her music is one of the reasons it’s worth being on this planet”.  Featuring interviews with: Tony Bennett, Jamie Cullum, Laura Mvula, Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Cleo Laine, Andre Previn, Norma Miller, Patti Austin, Izsak Perlman, Margo Jefferson, Will Friedwald and a rare interview with Ella’s son, Ray Brown Jr. (ellafitzgeraldmovie.com)

If you don't know anything about Ella Fitzgerald, but would like to, if you are not familiar with her most famous works like the "Songbook" albums or "Ella in Berlin", if you are in need of a general introduction, then this documentary is for you.

VA - At The Louisiana Hayride Tonight [2017] (20 x CD's) + Booklet

COUNTRY MUSIC HISTORY  ( New link for CD19 & 20 added 2/Feb to correct tagging)

VA - At The Louisiana Hayride Tonight [2017] (20 x CD's) + Booklet

From 1948 to 1960, the Louisiana Hayride served as a launching pad for many of the greatest stars in country music.

The Louisiana Hayride show at the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport, Louisiana was the place for country music fans to be on a Saturday night. Just sixty cents for adults (thirty for kids) bought the finest night’s entertainment anytime, anywhere. This set is a front-row seat as Hank Williams takes to the stage, first as a relative newcomer and later as a troubled superstar. Elvis Presley brings rockabilly to the airwaves before anyone knew what he or his music was about. A parade of home-grown and out-of-town country hitmakers tussle with one another for encores, and encourage unknown newcomers who would wow the audience with their songs and performances most nights. This is the first time the true magic of the iconic Louisiana Hayride has been revealed through extended excerpts from the three-hour Saturday night shows held every week from 1948 to 1960 and occasionally thereafter. These long-buried musical performances are brought to life in chronological order interspersed with some of the announcements, intros, ads, comedy routines and mistakes that went to make up a live show in those days. Not least, we can hear Elvis Presley’s epoch-changing music as it was originally heard, as part of a country variety show. Martin Hawkins, who co-produced the set, says that if you are used to the high level of excellence of Bear Family releases, you won't be disappointed. When the idea was presented to Hawkins, he knew that it was going to take some time and care and a lot of discs. ''The company got access to hundreds of hours of live recordings from the program, wanted to put a box set together, and wanted to know if I would work on it. It took me about two years to plow through all of the music. I sent a message saying that if the company wanted to do this thing properly, it's probably going to take about twenty CDs. They came back to me and said 'If that's what it takes, then that's what we will do.' Even with the twenty discs, we just scratched the surface of everything that is available.''

In addition to the music, there is a hardcover book with rare photos of the artists involved in the show, as well as a little bit of rock n' roll history such as the night when one star made his last performance on the show. ''Horace Logan was the first emcee on the Hayride job,'' Hawkins says. ''In 1956, when Elvis Presley played his last show on the Hayride, he had actually been off for some months, and came back to do a special one-off show for charity. The crowd went completely crazy, but they still had two hours or so to go, so Horace came back out with the famous phrase 'Elvis has left the building.''' He notes it was the first time that phrase was uttered. ''So you can hear the full version of that on the set.'' (Amazon)

These 20 CD's comprise over 24 hours of music captured on-stage in the 1940's, '50's, and '60's at KWKH's legendary Louisiana Hayride radio show by 167 artists. Most of this music has not been heard since the day it was broadcast and with fabulously restored sound. Eighteen CD's chronicle the weekly Hayride  and two bonus CD's sample some of the post-1960 shows together with commercial recordings made in the KWKH radio studios, promotional discs and transcribed shows from KWKH’s early days.  Enjoy!
