VA - Jangle Rock Bonanza Vol. 01 + Vol. 02 + Vol. 03 (7 x CD's)

Jangle pop (sometimes conflated with "college rock") is popular music that emphasizes trebly, ringing guitars (usually 12-string electrics) and 1960s-style pop melodies. It was pioneered by the Searchers and the Everly Brothers in the 1950s and 1960s and popularized by the Beatles and the Byrds in the mid-1960s. Guitarists commonly employed the Rickenbacker 360/12, which created a clear, ringing sound that could not be reproduced with other popular models such as the Fender Telecaster or Gibson Les Paul.  The term "jangle pop" is derived from the lyric "In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come following you" from the Byrds' 1965 rendition of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man", as well as the chiming sound of its 12-string electric guitar. Even though many subsequent bands drew hugely from the Byrds, they did not fit into the folk-rock continuum as the Byrds did. Groups such as the Who (in their early mod years), the Beach Boys, the Hollies and Paul Revere & the Raiders also incorporated 12-string Rickenbacker's. Folk rock artists Simon and Garfunkel crossed over into jangle pop by adding 12-string guitars to their music, which helped launch their commercial success. From then and into the 1970s, jangle pop saw a crossover with other subgenres, including power pop artists like Raspberries and Big Star who blurred the line between the two styles.

Rickenbacker guitars were expensive and rare, but could create a clear, ringing sound that could not be reproduced with the "twangier" Telecaster or the "fatter, less sharp" sound of the Les Paul. After seeing the Beatles' 1964 film A Hard Day's Night, the Byrds modeled their sound on the Beatles and prominently featured a Rickenbacker electric 12-string guitar in many of their recordings.

Here are 3 Volumes of my favorite Jangle Rock songs.
The first two Volumes (2 x 2CD sets) includes tracks that are jangly guitar sounds not exclusively from Rickenbacker guitars.
The 3rd Volume (3 x CD's) are jangly rock tracks whose sound is made exclusively from Rickenbacker guitars.

Hope you enjoy these great jangle indie rock songs.

VA - The Sound of Byrds (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

The Byrd sound is a combination of Jangly Guitar sounds (McGuinn’s Rickenbacker 12-string) and the strong vocal harmonies of the Byrds which is what really defined their sound.

The Jangle or jingle-jangle is a sound typically characterized by un-distorted, treble-heavy electric guitars (particularly 12-strings) played in a droning chordal style (by strumming or arpeggiating). The sound is mainly associated with pop music as well as 1960's guitar bands, folk rock, and 1980's indie music. It is sometimes classed as its own subgenre, jangle pop. Music critics use the term to suggest guitar pop that evokes a bright mood.  Despite forerunners such as the Searchers and the Everly Brothers, it was the Beatles and the Byrds who are commonly credited with launching the popularity of the jangle. The name derives from the lyric "in the jingle-jangle morning, I'll come following you" from the Byrds' 1965 rendition of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man". Although many subsequent jangle bands drew significantly from the Byrds, they were not necessarily folk rock as the Byrds were.  Since the 1960s, the jangle sound has crossed numerous genres, including power pop, psychedelia, new wave, post-punk, and lo-fi. In the 1980's, the most prominent bands of early indie rock were jangle pop groups. (Wikipedia)

In 2018, Guitar World contributor Damian Fanelli cited McGuinn's "distinctive 12-string Rickenbacker jangle" as among the "most influential and imitated guitar sounds of the past 53 years." It was McGuinn’s Rickenbacker 12-string, but what really defined their sound was their vocal harmonies. Four of the five original members (McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, and Chris Hillman) were superb vocalists, as were most of the members that drifted through over the years. Like CSN&Y after them, the vocal harmonizing and songwriting played a far bigger role in their sound than the admittedly fine guitar work by Stills on the one hand and McGuinn on the other.

Here are 60 tracks by other artist who carry on that Byrdsy sound. Enjoy!

K's JANGLE POP SPECIAL VA - Jangle Pop: 155 F.A.B. Jangle Pop Gems (Super Deluxe Edition) [2022] (7 x CDs)

K's JANGLE POP SPECIAL

VA - Jangle Pop: 155 F.A.B. Jangle Pop Gems (Super Deluxe Edition) [2022] (7 x CDs)

Jangle pop is a subgenre of pop rock or college rock that emphasizes jangly guitars and 1960s-style pop melodies. The term originated from Bob Dylan's song "Mr. Tambourine Man", whose 1965 rendition by the Byrds became considered one of the genre's representative works.

Jangle or jingle-jangle is a sound typically characterized by undistorted, treble-heavy electric guitars (particularly 12 strings) played in a droning chordal style (by strumming or arpeggiating). The sound is mainly associated with pop music as well as 1960s guitar bands, folk rock, and 1980s indie music. It is sometimes classed as its own subgenre, jangle pop. Music critics use the term to suggest guitar pop that evokes a bright mood. A Rickenbacker 360/12 was commonly used to produce "jangly" guitar sounds in the 1960s.

Despite forerunners such as Jackie DeShannon, the Searchers and the Everly Brothers, it was the Beatles and the Byrds who are commonly credited with launching the popularity of jangle.

Since the 1960s, jangle pop has crossed numerous genres, including power pop, psychedelia, new wave, post-punk, and lo-fi.  In the 1980s, the most prominent bands of early indie rock were jangle pop groups such as R.E.M., the Wedding Present, and the Smiths. In the early to mid 1980s, the term "jangle pop" emerged as a label for an American post-punk movement that recalled the sounds of "jangly" acts from the 1960s. Between 1983 and 1987, the description "jangle pop" was used to describe bands like R.E.M., 10,000 Maniacs and Let's Active, as well as the Paisley Underground subgenre, which incorporated psychedelic influences.

The Everly Brothers and the Searchers laid the foundations for jangle pop in the late 1950s to mid 1960s; examples include "All I Have to Do Is Dream" (1958), and "Needles and Pins" (1964). Even though many subsequent bands drew hugely from the Byrds, not every group were as folk rock

sounding as the Byrds were. From then and into the 1970s, jangle pop saw a crossover with other subgenres, including power pop artists like the Raspberries and Big Star who blurred the line between the two styles, and folk rock artists such as Simon and Garfunkel.

1980s post-punk and new wave artists such as the Smiths, Pretenders, The Jam, XTC, Aztec Camera, The Cure, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, The La's and the Sundays were all influenced by the pioneering jangle pop groups of the 1960s and 1970s.

An AllMusic summary of modern jangle pop describes it as a "pop-based format", but not mainstream, as the lyrics could often be "deliberately cryptic", and the sound "raw and amateurish" with a DIY production.

An article in Blogcritics magazine claims that besides R.E.M., the "... only other jangle-pop band to enjoy large sales in America were the Bangles, from Los Angeles. While better known for their glossy hits like 'Manic Monday', their first album and EP were organic, real jangle-pop efforts in a Byrds/Big Star vein, spiced with a dash of psychedelia on their debut."

So, after exhaustive and extensive online research, plus my own recollections and memories growing up with a lot of this music, here is my personal compilation of what I consider to be the best and most important tracks from the jangle pop era.  This fully packed 7CD set contains many rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with many featured in their original 7" single mono form. Only the original studio mixes are included. No later remixes, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here!   Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

Get ready to jingle-jangle in the morning, the afternoon and all the way through the night!

JANGLE POP ROCK

VA - Jangle Rock Bonanza Vol. 01 + Vol. 02 + Vol. 03 (7 x CD's)

Jangle pop (sometimes conflated with "college rock") is popular music that emphasizes trebly, ringing guitars (usually 12-string electrics) and 1960s-style pop melodies. It was pioneered by the Searchers and the Everly Brothers in the 1950s and 1960s, and popularized by the Beatles and the Byrds in the mid-1960s. Even though many subsequent bands drew hugely from the Byrds, they did not fit into the folk rock continuum as the Byrds did. Groups such as the Who (in their early mod years), the Beach Boys, the Hollies and Paul Revere & the Raiders also incorporated 12-string Rickenbackers.

Rickenbacker guitars were expensive and rare, but could create a clear, ringing sound that could not be reproduced with the more "twangy" Telecaster or the "fatter, less sharp" sound of the Les Paul.
