ZYDECO

VA - Beans Not Salty, Great Zydeco Music (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

"Zydeco" does have a meaning. It is believed to have originated from the French phrase "les haricots," which means "the beans." In Creole French, the phrase "les haricots sont pas salés" (the beans are not salty) was commonly used as a metaphor to describe a situation that is not going well or lacks excitement.  Over time, "les haricots" transformed into "zydeco" through a process of linguistic evolution and cultural influence. The term "zydeco" eventually became associated with the energetic and lively music that emerged in the Creole communities of Louisiana. It refers to a style of music characterized by its infectious rhythms and spirited performances.  So, while the term "zydeco" doesn't have a specific literal meaning, it has come to represent a vibrant musical genre deeply rooted in the cultural heritage and history of Louisiana's Creole communities.

Zydeco music is an exuberant and lively genre that originated in the Creole communities of southwest Louisiana. Drawing influences from traditional Louisiana Creole music, African rhythms, French folk music, blues, and rhythm and blues, Zydeco is a dynamic fusion of cultural elements.

At the heart of Zydeco is the accordion, which takes center stage, accompanied by a rhythmic ensemble featuring instruments like the rubboard (or "zydeco washboard"), drums, guitar, bass, and sometimes saxophone or other brass instruments. The accordion weaves vibrant and syncopated melodies, while the rhythm section provides an irresistible beat that compels people to dance.  Zydeco lyrics are often sung in Louisiana French or English, exploring themes of love, community, daily life, and cultural pride. The music's infectious rhythms, lively tempos, and the distinct sound of the accordion give Zydeco its unique and captivating character.

Zydeco music thrives in festive settings such as festivals, dance halls, and social gatherings, where people come together to revel in its energetic beats and participate in lively dances. The genre has gained popularity both within Louisiana and internationally, with notable artists like Clifton Chenier, Boozoo Chavis, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Terrance Simien becoming iconic figures in Zydeco music. CAJUN

VA - Gumbo Magic (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

What is Gumbo?
Gumbo is often cited as an example of the melting-pot nature of Louisiana cooking where it is the most famous and, very likely, the most popular. It is a dish served with the correct amount of heat and spice that your mouth begins to water up when the dish is near you. You feel absolutely wonderful after consuming it and you are left wanting more. Gumbo crosses all class barriers, appearing on the tables of the poor as well as the wealthy.

These tracks have a variety of styles related to Creole, Cajun, Swamp Blues, Zydeco, Jazz Swing and Blues music.  I have posted this type of music here before but not made a compilation, so I hope it suits your palate.  First time Gumbo Cook. It consists primarily of a strongly flavored, roux-based Blues Rock, meaty flavour's and hint of chili. This version of Gumbo has no thickener added. Like the Gumbo dish it is served steaming hot and is flavoursome. Dig in and enjoy Gumbo Magic.
