AFRICAN PSYCH

VA - Journeys Into Psychedelic Africa A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

African psychedelic music was never a single sound. It was not a scene in the way London, San Francisco or Berlin were scenes. It emerged in fragments, in port cities, university halls, roadside studios, national radio rooms, desert camps, nightclubs, political ceremonies and half-functioning pressing plants. Across the continent, musicians absorbed rock, funk, soul, traditional rhythms, spiritual music, electric blues and homemade electronics, then reshaped them into something stranger and far more personal. What survives on these recordings is not simply “African rock” or “Afro-funk.” It is the sound of musicians discovering entirely new emotional languages in real time.

This collection follows that journey across four discs, each one moving deeper into a different psychological space.

CD1 begins at ignition point. Raw guitars, distorted organs, fuzz pedals and ecstatic rhythms collide with highlife, Afrobeat and local ceremonial traditions. These recordings carry an incredible sense of possibility. Bands like Witch, Ofege and The Funkees were not imitating Western psychedelic music, they were transforming it into something rooted in entirely different landscapes and spiritual traditions. The energy is youthful, restless and alive.

CD2 moves inward. Rhythm becomes ritualistic, hypnotic and cyclical. Desert blues, modal repetition and trance structures begin to dominate the music. The pulse slows down, but the intensity deepens. Here, artists such as Tinariwen, El Wali and Fela Kuti stretch music into long-form spiritual movement. Songs become journeys rather than performances. Time itself starts to dissolve.

CD3 represents the electric city at night. Psychedelia mutates into urban groove systems, cosmic disco, deep funk and hypnotic repetition. Synthesizers appear beside traditional percussion. Studio experimentation becomes part of the language. Artists like William Onyeabor, Manu Dibango and Steve Monite create music that feels futuristic even decades later, balancing dancefloor motion with something deeply mysterious beneath the surface.

By CD4, the journey reaches dissolution. The music becomes spacious, reflective and dreamlike. Voices drift through desert air, rhythms fade into memory, and songs feel suspended between continents, histories and states of consciousness. What remains is atmosphere, emotion and distance. The recordings by Francis Bebey, Ali Farka Touré, Mamani Keïta and Tinariwen do not simply close the collection, they transform it into something almost cinematic, as though the listener is slowly travelling beyond the physical world these recordings came from.

Many of these tracks survived against impossible odds. Small pressings, unstable political climates, collapsing studios, disappearing master tapes and decades of neglect nearly erased this music entirely. Yet the recordings endure because they contain something timeless, discovery. The feeling of musicians pushing beyond known forms and finding sounds that still feel radical today.

This box set is not intended as an invitation into a different way of hearing music, where rhythm becomes landscape, repetition becomes trance, and psychedelia is not escapism but transformation. And it is not a definitive anthology. It is but a structured listening environment, one that encourages one to hear psychedelia not as a sound, but as a series of evolving systems of perception across African musical history. (B)

SOUTH AFRICAN

VA - Zulu Stomp!! South Africa Garage Beats!! [2010]

Issued by No Smoke Records in 2010, Zulu Stomp!! South Africa Garage Beats!!uncovers a vibrant corner of 1960s popular music that remained largely hidden from international audiences for decades. Drawing together rare recordings from South Africa's beat, garage, rhythm-and-blues, and pop scenes, the collection captures the excitement of young musicians engaging with the global rock explosion while developing a character all their own.

The energy arrives immediately. Electric guitars jangle and crunch, drums push songs forward with youthful urgency, and harmonies reflect the influence of British beat groups that dominated the decade. Yet these recordings never feel like simple copies of overseas trends. There is a distinct local flavour throughout, shaped by South Africa's unique musical environment and the realities of a country undergoing profound social and political tensions.

One of the set's greatest strengths is its variety. Some tracks burst with dancefloor energy and garage-rock directness, while others lean toward polished pop, soulful rhythm-and-blues, or harmony-rich beat music. The sequencing reveals a scene far more diverse than many listeners might expect, full of musicians experimenting with new sounds while remaining rooted in their own cultural surroundings.

Beyond its historical value, the collection succeeds because the performances themselves remain so engaging. The recordings possess a freshness that survives well beyond their era. Enthusiasm, invention, and a sense of possibility run through every disc, creating the feeling of a scene discovering itself in real time.

More than a compilation of rare tracks, Zulu Stomp!!documents a moment when South African musicians absorbed international influences and transformed them into something distinctive. The result is both an enjoyable listen and an important piece of musical archaeology, revealing a rich chapter in 1960s garage and beat music that deserves a place alongside the better-known stories of London, Liverpool, and Los Angeles. VA - PSYCHEDELIC BERLIN (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

BERLIN ROCKS.

VA - PSYCHEDELIC BERLIN (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

Psychedelic Berlin did not arrive fully formed. It emerged slowly, shaped by a city learning to reinvent itself through sound. In the late sixties, the first wave gathered in rooms like the Zodiak Free Arts Lab, where Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Agitation Free, and Conrad Schnitzler treated electricity as a raw material. Their records on labels such as Ohr, Pilz, and Brain carried long improvisations that felt closer to sculpture than song. Berlin was divided, yet the music reached outward, using repetition and texture to create a sense of space that the city itself could not offer. These early groups built a vocabulary of drones, phased guitars, and modular synth lines that defined the period from 1968 to 1975 and gave the city a new identity.

The next shift came when Hansa Tonstudio became a meeting point for local experimenters and visiting artists. Between 1976 and 1989, the studio’s large Meistersaal room added its own character to recordings made there. David Bowie’s Berlin-era work, including pieces such as “V-2 Schneider” and “Sense of Doubt,” alongside Iggy Pop’s Berlin-period recordings such as “Nightclubbing,” reflect this environment where sound was shaped as much by space as by performance. Tangerine Dream also continued to develop their studio-based explorations in this broader Berlin context. At the same time, German groups such as Malaria!, Palais Schaumburg, and Liaisons Dangereuses pushed rhythm and electronics into sharper, more urban forms. Psychedelic Berlin moved from cosmic drift to architectural tension, replacing the open landscapes of the early seventies with the metallic pulse of a city living beside the Wall. The music remained exploratory, but the mood darkened, and the sense of place became more defined and immediate.

After reunification, the city changed again. New rehearsal rooms, clubs, and independent labels appeared, and a younger generation revisited the long-form approach of the early pioneers. Bands like Colour Haze, Electric Moon, and Samsara Blues Experiment recorded albums that stretched across entire sides of vinyl, using heavy riffs and extended jams to create a renewed form of immersion. Their releases on labels such as Elektrohasch, Nasoni, and Sulatron show how the psychedelic impulse adapted to a louder, more communal environment. Berlin’s history remained present, but it was reinterpreted rather than repeated.

In the years after 2010, the focus widened further. Berlin’s electronic and experimental scenes expanded across neighbourhoods such as Neukölln and beyond, with artists including Moderat, Pantha Du Prince, Objekt, and Toresch working with rhythm and atmosphere in ways that echo earlier decades while using contemporary production tools. The city’s psychedelic character shifted toward clarity and detail, shaped by digital production but still grounded in repetition, texture, and mood.

Across these eras, the constant element is curiosity. Psychedelic Berlin represents a refusal to settle, a belief that sound can describe a city more accurately than words. It continues to evolve because Berlin continues to change, and each generation finds its own way to listen. (B)

ROCK

VA - The Psychedelic Colours of 60's London [2006] (2 x CDs)

Issued in 2006 by Pazzazz, The Psychedelic Colours of 60's London surveys one of the most imaginative periods in British popular music. Drawing together well-known names and lesser-known discoveries, the collection captures the moment when London's musicians began pushing beyond the limits of conventional pop and into more adventurous territory.

What emerges is not a single style but a creative scene. Psychedelic pop, blues-rock, folk influences, ornate arrangements, and experimental studio techniques all appear throughout the set. Artists embraced new sounds, unusual instruments, and increasingly ambitious production methods while still retaining a strong sense of melody.

The collection benefits from its broad perspective. Alongside celebrated recordings by artists such as Small Faces, Donovan, The Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac, and Humble Pie are tracks from performers who never achieved the same level of recognition but contributed significantly to the era's restless creativity. Together they reveal a London music scene that was far deeper and more varied than the familiar psychedelic highlights alone might suggest.

Rather than presenting psychedelia as a collection of studio effects and colourful imagery, these recordings demonstrate how experimentation became woven into British songwriting itself. The result is a compilation that functions both as an enjoyable listen and as a snapshot of a remarkable cultural moment, when pop music expanded its horizons and London's artists helped redefine what popular music could be. VA - This Can't Be Today, American Psychedelia & The Paisley Underground 1977-1988 (3 x CDs)

This Can't Be Today, American Psychedelia & The Paisley Underground 1977-1988 pulls together a period that often gets split into scenes and labels, but here it’s allowed to sit as a continuous thread. Covering the late seventies into the late eighties, the set doesn’t treat psychedelia as revival or nostalgia. It comes through as something being reworked in real time, shaped by new bands who were absorbing older forms without trying to replicate them outright.

The early stretch leans into that in-between space. There’s a sense of rediscovery, where jangle, reverb, and melodic drift start to reappear, but with a tighter, more grounded feel than the original wave. The sequencing keeps things close enough that connections form naturally, guitars ring across tracks, voices stay slightly detached, and rhythm sections hold things steady underneath. As it moves forward, the Paisley Underground side becomes more defined, not as a separate chapter but as a gradual sharpening of ideas. Songs feel more structured, arrangements more deliberate, and the interplay between light and shade becomes more pronounced. Nothing breaks sharply, it all accumulates.

The set works through feel rather than argument. Tracks build on each other, small details start to echo, and a wider picture comes into focus. What stays with it is how these bands carried a language forward, not by preserving it, but by letting it shift just enough to remain alive within a different time. (B)

MELLOW PSYCH

VA - Mellow Psych, A Soft Focus on the Psychedelic Drift (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

Mellow Psych lives in that gentle space where the psychedelic impulse turns inward. Instead of fuzzed‑out guitars or kaleidoscopic overload, this set leans toward the softer end of the spectrum, drifting harmonies, warm textures, and a kind of introspective glow that sits just outside the everyday. Across these 4-CDs, private‑press gems sit comfortably beside sunshine‑psych deep cuts, all sharing lightly lysergic colours, melodic ease, and a sense of emotional weightlessness. These aren’t tracks for the dancefloor or the freak‑out, they’re for the quiet hours, when the world softens at the edges and everything feels a little out of phase.

You’ll hear the hallmarks of the style throughout: chiming guitars, hushed vocals, and arrangements that favour space over spectacle. Many of the rarities come from regional 45s and micro‑label LPs, young bands chasing the psychedelic moment with limited means but surprising sincerity. That’s part of the magic. The production may be modest, yet the ideas are vivid. Cuts like “The Phycle,” “Crystalize Your Mind,” and the more fragile folk‑psych moments carry that handmade quality collectors love, small‑run records capturing big, dreamy ambitions.

The first two discs trace the classic era, where melodic psychedelia and sunshine pop overlap in bright, buoyant ways. The third disc turns inward, drifting into pastoral, reflective, and occasionally haunted territory. The final disc widens the frame, showing how the mellow psychedelic impulse continued to evolve long after the sixties, still glowing, still drifting, still inviting.

What ties everything together is the emotional clarity. These tracks aren’t here to overwhelm; they’re here to invite you in. A soft‑focus journey through the quieter corners of psychedelia, rewarding close listening and late‑night immersion. (B)
