VA - Best Rock Saxophone Vol. 01 Intros + Vol. 02 Outros (A Butterboy Compilation)

The saxophone was built to be a big sound. It was invented by Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax in 1840 to be used in European military marching bands. “It took a lot of clarinets to match a brass instrument, so [it made more sense to] have one saxophone and the rest of the guys in the infantry,” Harrington explained. “It was much louder and projected much better.” The saxophone is always the loudmouth at the party. It’s curvy and shiny, with a dramatic shape and an unmistakable sound. It blares, blows, growls. A saxophone screams. A saxophone honks. It doesn’t jam or shred or flow. The saxophone isn’t like a piano intro or a guitar solo.

“The saxophone almost mimics a human voice, it’s very expressive, and that comes from both how flexible the sound can be but also the sonic quality.” (Thomas Erdmann).   That range carried the saxophone through dozens of genres of American music without interruption until the late ’80s. When rock ’n’ roll emerged in the ’50s, it gave the saxophone another boost. “A strong hook can make a song, and it used to be that many of those hooks were created by saxophonists,” Erdman said. In the 1950s, that guy was Plas Johnson, the saxophonist behind the riffs in some of America’s biggest songs, like “Pink Panther” and “Rockin’ Robin.”

Big name ’80s pop stars started using the saxophone to create hooks that were catchy, but inescapable and incredibly annoying. And that use took it from being a cool instrument with a strong sound, to being a weird, almost tacky gimmick. Saxophone historians skim over this section of the sax’s perception in spite of the fact that it was the site of a major turn. When George Michael used the saxophone as the intro to “Careless Whisper,” its grooving, sensual riff became a parody quickly. Sade’s “Smooth Operator,” released the same year as “Careless Whisper,” featured a classic saxophone solo not unlike the ones heard throughout popular music history. (Excerpts from Kelsey McKinney article theoutline.com)

So here are some tracks for your listening pleasure. These 2 sets are split into two groups, Saxophone Intros and Outros.

And before anyone complains, apologies for the misprinted spell of saxophone on the covers that are included...

VA - The Clarion Set (The Story Of Australian Independent Label Clarion 1965-1974) (3 x CDs)

CLARION LABEL

VA - The Clarion Set (The Story Of Australian Independent Label Clarion 1965-1974) [2023] (3 x CDs)

Clarion Records was a pioneering independent label that operated in Perth, Western Australia, from 1962 to 1978. Founded by Martin Clarke, a radio producer and engineer, and Keith MacGowan, a radio DJ, Clarion Records was dedicated to promoting local talent and producing high-quality recordings. Clarion Records was one of the most productive and influential labels of its time, releasing 120 singles, 20 EPs and 20 LPs, covering a wide range of genres, from pop and rock to folk and country. The label also had a national impact, thanks to the success of several acts such as Johnny Young, The Valentines (featuring Bon Scott), Fatty Lumpkin and Chalice.

The Clarion Set is a three-CD box set that showcases the best of Clarion Records from 1965 to 1974. It contains 86 tracks, including many rare and unreleased recordings and is divided into three thematic discs: 1965-1967,1967-1969 and 1969-1974. Each disc reflects the diversity and creativity of the Perth music scene in the sixties and seventies, as well as the vision and passion of Martin Clarke and his team.  It is a smorgasbord of driving R&B, sunshine pop, studio psychedelia and progressive rock recorded in Perth, Western Australia.

CD1, features some of the earliest and most energetic recordings from Clarion Records. It includes garage rock classics such as “I’ve Got My Eyes on You (And I Like What I See)” by Russ Kennedy and The Little Wheels, “Gloria” by The Spektors, “Bama Lama Bama Loo” by Ray Hoff & The Off Beats and “Step Back” by Johnny Young (demo). It also showcases some of the lesser-known but equally talented bands such as Roy Hoff & The Off Beats, Glen Ingram with The Hi-Five, Terry Walker with The Hi Five and Robby Snowden. The disc captures the raw and exciting sound of the Perth beat scene, influenced by British Invasion bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks.

CD2, explores the more adventurous and experimental side of Clarion Records. It features some of the most psychedelic and progressive recordings from the label, such as “King of the Mountain” by The Proclamation, “Love Makes Sweet Music” by The Valentines, “Hip Huggin’ Mini” by Soul Purpose and “Geno Pts 1 and 2” by Johnny Young. It also includes some of the more melodic and catchy pop songs such as “Hold On” by Johnny Young, “Da Doo Ron Ron” by Chris James, “Come On Up” by Johnny Young and “Little Boat” by The Troupadours. The disc demonstrates the versatility and innovation of the Perth pop scene, influenced by American West Coast bands such as The Byrds, The Beach Boys and The Mamas & The Papas.

CD3, showcases the more acoustic and rootsy side of Clarion Records. It features some of the finest folk and country recordings from the label, such as “Magic Words” by The Birds, “Sunshine River” by Gemini, “Don’t Knock My Boogie” by Fatty Lumpkin and “Mr. Won’t You Help Me” by Chalice. These songs reflect the rich and varied musical heritage of Western Australia, influenced by Irish folk music, Italian accordion music and Australian bush ballads. However, the disc also features some of the most psychedelic and progressive recordings from the label, such as “In My World” by Chalice, “Ebenezer” by Chalice, “Millionaire” by Fatty Lumpkin and “Nine to Five Girl” by Chalice. The disc also includes some of the more energetic and soulful tracks such as “Somebody to Love” by Swingshift, “Soul Finger” by Willpower, “Boogaloo Down Broadway” by Soul Purpose and “Spinning Wheel” by Willpower. The disc  alsso features some of the more melodic and catchy pop songs such as “Things We Said Today” by Strawberry Fair, “Even Stevens” by The Vegetable Garden, “Little Boat” by The Troupadours and “Do You Want to Dance” by Robby Snowden. These songs show the influence of British pop bands such as The Beatles, The Hollies and Herman’s Hermits. The disc also includes some of the more classic and timeless songs such as “We Can Work It Out” by Swingshift, “Here, There & Everywhere” by Swingshift, “I See the Rain” by The Birds and “Rene” by The Birds. These songs are inspired by some of the greatest songwriters of all time such as Lennon-McCartney, Goffin-King and Bacharach-David.

The disc is a remarkable collection that showcases the diversity and creativity of Clarion Records and its artists. It is a tribute to Martin Clarke’s vision and dedication to recording quality music in Western Australia. It is also a testament to the talent and diversity of the Perth music scene in the sixties and seventies. The disc is an essential listen for anyone interested in Australian music history or independent music in general.

The Clarion Set is a remarkable collection that celebrates the legacy of Clarion Records and its artists. High Llamas - Retrospective Rarities & Instrumentals [2003] (2 x CD's)

HIGH LLAMAS
Previously posted June 19, 2019

High Llamas - Retrospective Rarities & Instrumentals [2003] (2 x CD's)

Retrospective, Rarities & Instrumentals is a double-disc summation of the High Llamas' recordings for V2 (and two early records that V2 bought the rights to). The first disc is a collection of 16 songs from the Llamas albums: two tracks from 1992's Santa Barbara, three from 1995's Gideon Gaye, four from 1996's Hawaii, three from 1998's Cold & Bouncy, and four from 1999's Snowbug. The sequence of tracks is quite stunning. Many critics wrote the band off as mere Beach Boys copyists whose albums all sounded exactly the same, but hearing their best songs back to back, one can see they wrote a lot of killer melodies and while the songs are all based on the same template -- soaring strings, smooth harmony-laden background vocals, chamber pop accouterments like vibraphones and bells, Sean O'Hagan's honest and sweet voice, and a classic feel for melody -- there are enough differences to be found from track to track to make this disc a standout. It is fun to see how the early, relatively stripped-down sound of "Apricots" or "Holland" from their first album progresses to the lush, majestic sound of "Nomads" from Hawaii to the intricately arranged and easy listening-influenced sound of "Bach Ze" from Snowbug. Disc two collects 14 B-sides and songs that were bonus tracks on Japanese or U.S. editions of the albums. Three of the songs come from the limited-edition bonus disc that came with Hawaii, including one of O'Hagan's best songs, the arch and lovely "It Might as Well Be Dumbo." The rest of the tracks are a mix of space-age instrumentals and bouncy pop. The rarest track is the previously unreleased "Vampo Brazil," which was recorded for Cold & Bouncy but didn't make the final cut. This is a disc that fans will find to be a real treat, though not as essential as the first disc. Retrospective, Rarities & Instrumentals is the definitive High Llamas record. It makes a strong case for them as one of the best pop bands of the 1990s and is a heck of a lot of fun to listen to also. (AllMusic Review by Tim Sendra)

Teardrop Explodes - Culture Bunker 1978-82 (6 x CD)

TEARDROP EXPLODE

Teardrop Explodes - Culture Bunker 1978-82 (6 x CD)

The Teardrop Explodes were an English post-punk/neo-psychedelic band formed in Liverpool in 1978. Best known for their Top Ten UK single "Reward", the group originated as a key band in the emerging Liverpool post-punk scene of the late 1970s. The group also launched the career of group frontman Julian Cope as well as that of keyboard player and co-manager David Balfe (later a record producer, A&R man and founder of Food Records). Other members included early Smiths producer Troy Tate.

Along with other contemporary Liverpudlian groups, The Teardrop Explodes played a role in returning psychedelic elements to mainstream British rock and pop, initially favouring a modernised version of lightly psychedelic late 1960s-influenced beat-group sound (sometimes described as "bubblegum trance") and later exploring more experimental areas. In addition to their musical reputation, the band (and Cope in particular) had a reputation for eccentric pronouncements and behaviour, sometimes verging on the self-destructive, resulting in the band's breakup in 1982.

Teardrop Explodes - Culture Bunker 1978-82 is a comprehensive and fascinating collection of their music, spanning their entire career from their debut single Sleeping Gas in 1978 to their final album Wilder in 1981, as well as some live recordings and demos from 1982. The box set contains six CDs of previously unreleased tracks by the band, including alternate versions, remixes, radio sessions, and studio outtakes. The box set showcases the band’s evolution from their early days as a raw and energetic quartet to their commercial peak with hits like Reward and Treason to their creative dissolution with the ambitious but flawed Wilder. The audio quality of the box set is excellent, as the tracks have been remastered by Andy Pearce from original tapes and cassettes. The box set is a must-have for fans of the Teardrop Explodes and anyone interested in the history of British alternative music. Culture Bunker 1978-82 is a limited-edition release. (Amazon)

Buy this Jasmine label compilation, and find out who cut the original versions of million-selling numbers like 'His Latest Flame', 'Take Good Care Of My Baby', 'All Shook Up', 'He'll Have To Go', 'Johnny Angel', 'Release Me', 'Twist And Shout', 'Go Away Little Girl', 'Detroit City', 'He's A Rebel', 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On', 'Rave On', and many more.  Featured artists herein range from big name artists like Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Del Shannon, Bobby Vee, Dion, Joan Baez, Johnnie Ray, Roger Miller, Wanda Jackson, Ral Donner, etc., to downright unknown/obscure names like Gil Hamilton, David Hill, Eddie Miller, Georgia Lee, Chase Webster, Georgie Shaw, Bruce Bruno and Yvonne Fair. Many of these lesser-known tracks have never previously appeared on CD.

A standout of the very first version of 'Release Me' from 1949 is in complete contrast to later versions especially the Engelbert Humperdinck version. All the transfers are crisp and as clean as some of them can be. However, there are stereo tracks none of which would have been issued in stereo first time round. I would've preferred the mono originals for all these tracks for authenticity. (Amazon)

VA - You Better Believe Rare and Modern Soul Gems Vol. 01+ Vol. 02 [2006] (2 x CDs)

RARE MODERN SOUL GEMS
previously posted December 5, 2019

VA - You Better Believe Rare and Modern Soul Gems Vol. 01+ Vol. 02 [2006] (2 x CDs)

Over the years, I have purchased many, many soul compilations. My interest has mainly been sixties R&B and soul. More recently, thanks largely to the comprehensive Complete Stax/Volt Singles boxes and the Rhino Soul Hits of the 70s I have really developed a deep appreciation for what is now acknowledged to be the last great period of soul music. Yes, it was more sophisticated, but there were really many fine songwriters, producers, arrangers and singers that were making some really sublime music during this time period. So, all that to get to this collection of songs from this same time period (1969-1979). These are songs that missed entirely in the U.S. but did attract the British dance crowd and have been "collectables" in their original 45 incarnation. The quality, pacing, sound quality and packaging on this collection is 1st rate, placing it right up there with Rhino and Ace/Kent. It's an import, not easy to find, and a bit pricey, but well worth the effort.... Exceptional compilation, many songs issued for the first time on CD (Amazon).

SUNDAY JAZZ

LOIS PRIMER & WINGY MANONE

VA - The Complete Brusnwick & Vocalion Recordings Of Louis Prima & Wingy Manone (1924-1937) [2002] (6 x CDs)

VA - The Complete Brusnwick & Vocalion Recordings Of Louis Prima & Wingy Manone (1924-1937) is a box set of six CDs that contains the complete recordings of two jazz musicians, Louis Prima and Wingy Manone, who were both born in New Orleans and played the trumpet and sang in a distinctive style. The box set was released in 2002 by Mosaic Records, a label that specializes in reissuing jazz recordings. The box set covers the period from 1924 to 1937, when Prima and Manone recorded for the Brunswick and Vocalion labels, which were subsidiaries of Warner Bros. Records. The box set includes 157 tracks, some of which are alternate takes or previously unreleased. The box set also comes with a booklet that contains biographical information, discographical details, and essays by jazz historians Dan Morgenstern and Loren Schoenberg.

The box set showcases the evolution of Prima and Manone’s musical styles, from their early influences of New Orleans jazz, blues, and ragtime, to their later incorporation of swing, big band, and pop elements. The box set also features some of their most famous songs, such as “Sing It 'Way Down Low”, “The Lady in Red”, “Basin Street Blues”, and “Dinah”. Some of the tracks also feature other notable jazz musicians, such as clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, saxophonist Bud Freeman, trombonist Jack Teagarden, and pianist Fats Waller.

The box set is a valuable collection for jazz fans and historians, as it preserves the legacy of two influential and charismatic performers who contributed to the development of American popular music. The box set is also a testament to the diversity and creativity of jazz music in the 1920s and 1930s. (B)
