Few genres of cinema are as striking and iconic as Film Noir. A dangerous cocktail of crime, gangsters and femme fatales, the music that accompanied the pictures was just as devastatingly beautiful. Composers such as Henry Mancini, Alex North & Duke Ellington guide you through darkly lit bars and hazy streets on this 3-disc set.   This 3-CD set is a well-curated set of some of the best, mood-setting crime jazz out there. It's an outstanding set, regardless of the rock-bottom price. For the money, it's a definite "must own". There are no liner notes (which is part of the reason I still try to buy actual CDs versus digital downloads), but the digipack is well put-together. Many of the best performers of the era are represented here on studio recordings, some of them create a special mood of classical jazz noir sound. (Amazon)

A great collection, which will please all fans of this genre, covers the jazz scene of several decades at once. For those who want to enjoy jazz noir from its very origins to more modern recordings, this disc is a must to listen to.

The Topic is your choice, Genre is your choice and any music is acceptable. (If readers don't like the topic or choices then they don't have to pick them up)

 When presenting your submission, the Topic of your compilation should be Noted as well as the sound quality of the compilation. (ie 320Kbps MP3, Flac, etc).

Whilst most would prefer MP3's @ 320 kbps all I request is a good sound quality.

Following the acclaimed Jazz On The Corner compilation 2019 again sees Martin Freeman team up with Acid Jazz's renowned head honcho Eddie Piller to present a veritable and personal collection of tracks. Compiled from the pair's personal favourites, be it hearing on the radio, word of mouth or Dj-ing - Soul On The Corner represents the entire gamut of soul from the sixties and seventies right up to the present as illustrated by the likes of Tommy McGhee and the Acid Jazz recent signee Laville. Opening with the inimitable Bobby Womack and How Could You Break My Heart, as Piller explains; "I never tire of hearing this record and have used regularly to close my DJ set, it's a real hands-in-the-air moment." Further cuts from the renowned and less well-known seamlessly complement each other - the smooth sultry jam of Laville's Thirty One or the superbly nuanced slice of progressive soul in the shape of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 77's Love Music. Piller's selection transcends the rock / soul divide with Never Gonna Give You Up from former Impression Jerry Butler, adding: "I plumped for this because I recalled the incredible response from The Black Keys' version that I aired on the BBC's Funk and Soul show." No less varied is the choice of soul fan Martin Freeman, opening with the vintage '68 soul with a twist of something rockier, Barbara Acklin's A Raggedy Ride that he professes; "is an unexpected gem that's been a favourite of mine for forever." Other picks arrive in the form of Georgie Fam's cover of Bobby Womack's Daylight that has Freeman enthusing; "the original is a beaut. This is better." Further inclusions come from The Supremes and The Wisdom Of Time, representing the mid-nineties contemporary soul scene is Lewis Taylor with Lucky that as Freeman asserts is; "an epic tune." Meanwhile, taken from their first self-titled album Earth, Wind & Fire's Fan The Fire epitomizes the innovative nature of one of the most successful acts of all time and adds Freeman; "this is a funky-as-hell cry for peace and love. Emerging out of the post-hippy fall-out of the late 1960's, Dave Brock and Hawkwind forged a new, psychedelic rock sound which, as the 1970's progressed, became the focal point of a festival scene that drew together countless alternative and counter-cultural artists, all of whom sought to take their listeners into previously unchartered realms of inner space. Gathered together here are the prime movers in this Brock-inspired scene which subsequently emerged and found focus towards the end of 70's, centred on free festivals, like-minded record labels, self-released cassettes and an anti-authoritarian lifestyle and political position.  From hard rocking psychedelic warriors to experimental sonic architects, ‘This Was Your Future’ captures a time and place in danger of being forgotten in the corporate playground of the present. A place where the guitar and the synthesiser proved mightier than the sword, offering an outlet for expression to countless artists for whom mainstream culture was a strange and alien landscape.

This extensive 40 track set explores the Space Rock and Free festival scene, 1978-1998. VA - Boogie Nights - 20 Original Disco Hits (Ronco RTL 2027 UK - R-2240 US) (2021 Remaster) (1978)          This album was originally released by Ronco in 1978 in both the UK and US. They each had different track listings, although Heatwave's 'Boogie Nights' and Ram Jam's 'Black Betty' appear on both. I've compiled this 2021 remaster to include the very best track selections from both versions; 13 from the UK edition, and 10 from the US, making a 23 track compilation with a new running time of 79:18 CD length.

VA - Blame It on the Boogie (K-tel NA 664 AUS) (2022 Remastered Expanded Edition) (1984)          Blame It on the Boogie was released by K-tel in Australia only in 1984. Initially containing 20 smash hit tracks, I have expanded the set to include two more 'boogie' songs (taken from previous K-tel albums) both released before 1984, the original album release date.  This 2022, 22 track expanded edition features all the complete original unedited 7" single mixes, fully remastered with a new running time of 77:46 CD length.

The revival of space age pop and exotica proved almost as chauvinistic as the music's original heyday four decades earlier. Virtually every reissue seemed geared to the male psyche, with gorgeous women on the covers, cocktail recipes in the liner notes, and wonderfully cheesy grooves promising to lubricate the art of seduction. Raiding the Atlantic and Warner archives to assemble space age bachelor pad musicthat are among the most widely heard examples of the genre. This means that experts might sniff and deride this collection as too "mainstream." Popular lounge music, however, was no less interesting than collectible lounge music, and perhaps more so. Which means that these are good samples of the style that was a subordinate but notable part of American popular music in the late 1950's and early 1960's, especially if you weren't around when these hits were played on AM radio.

Sometimes the titles of the instrumentals sufficed by themselves (Les Baxter's "Lust," Jerry Murad's "Music to Watch Girls By," Hyman's "The Topless Dancers of Corfu"). And there are old space age pop standbys like Latin rhythms, stereophonic experimentation, exotica, and mutation of time-honored pop standards worked in. These compilations may not be long on consistency, but on the other hand their track selection is very good, assembling some of the most amusing, fun, and adventurous cocktail music available.
