K's MADCHESTER SCENE SPECIAL - The 150 Greatest Acid House and Baggy Anthems of the Madchester Scene (Super Deluxe Edition) [2022] (10 x CD's)

K  MADCHESTER SCENE SPECIAL   -   The 150 Greatest Acid House and Baggy Anthems of the Madchester Scene (Super Deluxe Edition) [2022] (10 x CD's)

Manchester and 'Madchester'.

Madchester was a musical and cultural scene that developed in the English city of Manchester in the late 1980's, closely associated with the indie dance scene. Indie-dance (sometimes referred to as indie-rave) saw artists merging indie music with elements of acid house, psychedelia and 1960's pop.  The term Madchester was coined by Factory Records' Tony Wilson, with the label popularised by the British music press in the early 1990s, and its most famous groups include the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, the Charlatans, James and 808 State. It is widely seen as being heavily influenced by drugs, especially MDMA. At that time, the Haçienda nightclub, co-owned by members of New Order, was a major catalyst for the distinctive musical ethos in the city that was called the Second Summer of Love.

Acid house was also popular in Manchester. The Thunderdome (which was generally advertised as a techno night) in Miles Platting was at the epicenter of the scene and gave rise to acts like A Guy Called Gerald, 808 State, Jam MC's, Steve Williams and Jay Wearden. A Greater Manchester-based producer called Peter Ford teamed up with Richard Salt and recorded a record called "Oochy Koochy", regarded as the first British acid house track. Released by dance indie Rhythm King Records as "Oochy Koochy (F.U. Baby Yeh Yeh)" under the name Baby Ford, the record peaked at number 58 on the UK Singles Chart on 24 September 1988. The genre was extremely popular with the city's football hooligans. According to Manchester United football hooligan Colin Blaney in Hotshot: The Story of a Little Red Devil, the acid house venues were the only place where rival hooligan gangs would mix, without coming to blows with one another.

John Leckie produced the Stone Roses single "Fools Gold" (an indie-dance record which had a prominent 'shufflebeat' which came from a four bar loop based upon Clyde Stubblefield's "Funky Drummer" drum pattern) which was used on countless baggy records and it was mainly fans of the Stone Roses who started to wear the fashions that gave the genre/scene its alternative name.

Baggy was a name given to a British alternative dance genre popular in the late 1980's and early 1990's, with many of the artists referred to as "baggy" being bands from the Madchester scene. The "baggy" sound generally includes a combination of funk, psychedelia, guitar rock, and house music. In the Manchester context, the music can be seen as mainly influenced by the indie music that had dominated the city's music scene during the 1980s, but also absorbing the various influences coming through "the Haçienda" nightclub. Alongside the music, a way of dressing emerged that gave baggy its name. Baggy jeans (often flared, with the pants usually being made by Shami Ahmed's 'Joe Bloggs' brand alongside brightly coloured or tie-dye casual tops and general 1960s style became fashionable first in Manchester and then across the country, frequently topped off with a fishing hat in the style sported by the Stone Roses' drummer Alan "Reni" Wren. The overall look was part rave, part retro or part hippie,

part football casual. Many Madchester bands had football casual fans and a number of bands even wore football shirts.

The Madchester and baggy movements saw acid house influences bleed into the Mancunian rock scene. Here is my own compilation of what I consider to be the best and most important tracks of the Madchester music scene of the late 80's and early 90's. Not only this, but I have selected the very best versions of each song, as many tracks were remixed by prominent producers at the time such as Paul Oakenfold, Steve Osborne, Terry Farley, Marc Angelo, Chad Jackson, Andy Weatherall and others. Contains many rare and extremely hard to find versions and mixes. Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

Enjoy!

Stephen's Quote Of The Day:    "I always felt a need to work with the people with crazy, vibrant ideas. I needed those wild ideas, otherwise my music would be too tame. But they needed me as much as I needed them - I had to tame their ideas."  ... Steve Winwood (Worked with Jimi Hendrix)

C91

VA - C91 (3 x CD's)

Having successfully crossed over from the bedsit to the mainstream throughout 1989 and 1990, independent artists quickly began to dominate the British musical landscape, bringing an authentic new energy to a stagnant, Thatcherite pop scene. 1991 saw countless indie artists score hit singles and albums as the scene continued to mutate and adapt regionally, politically and aesthetically - from Manic Street Preachers’ urgent, punk-infused anthems and the outer edges of shoegaze and psychedelic songcraft offered by Chapterhouse and Levitation, through to the dancefloor friendly adventures of Flowered Up and St Etienne, the art-school informed Kingmaker and established baggy favourites The Charlatans, 1991 offered up the broadest and richest smorgasbord of accessible, street-level artists the UK’s youth had known in a decade.

‘C91’ is a snapshot of that time and place, bringing together the cream of the 1991 independent landscape and offering a rollercoaster of hits, near-misses and curiosities along the way. With thoughtful sleevenotes from Lois Wilson (Record Collector and MOJO) and fantastic mood- capturing artwork we’ve come to associate with the ‘C’ series, this set – the sixth in the series - continues a journey begun with ‘C86’, charting an essential, alternative view of the British music scene as it moved towards the inevitability of the 21st Century. SUNDAY JAZZ

JAZZ NOIR!

VA - Completely Jazz...Noir! [2018] (3 x CD's)

Few genres of cinema are as striking and iconic as Film Noir. A dangerous cocktail of crime, gangsters and femme fatales, the music that accompanied the pictures was just as devastatingly beautiful. Composers such as Henry Mancini, Alex North & Duke Ellington guide you through darkly lit bars and hazy streets on this 3 disc set.   This 3-CD set is a well-curated set of some of the best, mood-setting crime jazz out there. It's an outstanding set, regardless of the rock-bottom price. For the money, it's a definite "must own". There are no liner notes (which is part of the reason I still try to buy actual CD's versus digital downloads), but the digipack is well put-together. Many of the best performers of the era are represented here on studio recordings, some of them create a special mood of classical jazz noir sound. (Amazon)

A great collection, which will please all fans of this genre, covers the jazz scene of several decades at once. For those who want to enjoy jazz noir from its very origins to more modern recordings, this disc is a must to listen to.

SOUL ON THE CORNER

VA - Martin Freeman and Eddie Piller Present Soul On The Corner [2019] (2 x CD's)

Following the acclaimed Jazz On The Corner compilation 2019 again sees Martin Freeman team up with Acid Jazz's renowned head honcho Eddie Piller to present a veritable and personal collection of tracks. Compiled from the pair's personal favourites, be it hearing on the radio, word of mouth or Dj-ing - Soul On The Corner represents the entire gamut of soul from the sixties and seventies right up to the present as illustrated by the likes of Tommy McGhee and the Acid Jazz recent signee Laville. Opening with the inimitable Bobby Womack and How Could You Break My Heart, as Piller explains; "I never tire of hearing this record and have used regularly to close my DJ set, it's a real hands-in-the-air moment." Further cuts from the renowned and less well-known seamlessly complement each other - the smooth sultry jam of Laville's Thirty One or the superbly nuanced slice of progressive soul in the shape of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 77's Love Music. Piller's selection transcends the rock / soul divide with Never Gonna Give You Up from former Impression Jerry Butler, adding: "I plumped for this because I recalled the incredible response from The Black Keys' version that I aired on the BBC's Funk and Soul show." No less varied is the choice of soul fan Martin Freeman, opening with the vintage '68 soul with a twist of something rockier, Barbara Acklin's A Raggedy Ride that he professes; "is an unexpected gem that's been a favourite of mine for forever." Other picks arrive in the form of Georgie Fam's cover of Bobby Womack's Daylight that has Freeman enthusing; "the original is a beaut. This is better." Further inclusions come from The Supremes and The Wisdom Of Time, representing the mid-nineties contemporary soul scene is Lewis Taylor with Lucky that as Freeman asserts is; "an epic tune." Meanwhile, taken from their first self-titled album Earth, Wind & Fire's Fan The Fire epitomizes the innovative nature of one of the most successful acts of all time and adds Freeman; "this is a funky-as-hell cry for peace and love. Good lord, they were SO good." (Amazon)

SPACE ROCK

VA - Dave Brock Presents... This Was Your Future, Space Rock & Other Psychedelics 1978-1998 (3 x CD's)

Emerging out of the post-hippy fall-out of the late 1960's, Dave Brock and Hawkwind forged a new, psychedelic rock sound which, as the 1970's progressed, became the focal point of a festival scene that drew together countless alternative and counter-cultural artists, all of whom sought to take their listeners into previously unchartered realms of inner space. Gathered together here are the prime movers in this Brock-inspired scene which subsequently emerged and found focus towards the end of 70's, centred on free festivals, like-minded record labels, self-released cassettes and an anti-authoritarian lifestyle and political position.  From hard rocking psychedelic warriors to experimental sonic architects, ‘This Was Your Future’ captures a time and place in danger of being forgotten in the corporate playground of the present. A place where the guitar and the synthesiser proved mightier than the sword, offering an outlet for expression to countless artists for whom mainstream culture was a strange and alien landscape.

This extensive 40 track set explores the Space Rock and Free festival scene, 1978-1998. Compiled with the legendary Dave Brock, frontman of Hawkwind, figurehead of the scene and inspiration for countless like-minded heads. Featuring key names Hawkwind (and their many offshoots), Ozric Tentacles, Here And Now, Magic Mushroom Band, Poisoned Electrick Head, Michael Moorcock, Robert Calvert, and Tim Blake plus many lesser-known but vital players in a movement that was as much a way of life and a political philosophy as it was a music scene.
