BEACH BOYS

Beach Boys - Sail On Sailor, 1972 (Super Deluxe) [2022] (6 x CDs)

The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys' Sail On Sailor collection celebrates the landmark 1972 albums Carl And The Passions and Holland. This Super Deluxe 6 CD box set features the original albums fully remastered, outtakes and session highlights from the original "Mount Vernon and Fairway" EP, plus a previously unreleased 1972 concert from Carnegie Hall. Also included is a 48-page book with extensive liner notes, rare photos and more.  The six-disc Super Deluxe Edition box set contains 105 tracks, 80 of which were previously unreleased, including "Hard Time", "Carry Me Home", "Out in the Country", "Oh Sweet Something", "Spark in the Dark", "Rooftop Harry", "Body Talk (Grease Job)", "Pa Let Her Go Out (Better Get Back in Bed)", "Little Child (Daddy Dear)", and a medley of "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I Need Your Love". (Amazon)

Even in a career full of tumult, 1972 stands out as a busy, eventful year for the Beach Boys. Sail On Sailor 1972 documents the upheaval and growing pains the band was going through at the time and stands as a vital document of a strange period. While the band had recently re-established themselves as a live act, the recordings they made in 1972 looked to plug them back into the mainstream album rock scene. With new bandmembers Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin on board, the group toughened up and expanded their sound on Carl & The Passions - "So Tough." The arrangements are filled with loud guitars, pounding piano, insistent vocals, and rugged rhythms. Tracks like "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone" and "Marcella" sound like beefed-up takes on their earlier sunny sound, "Here She Comes" rambles like Van Morrison, and "Hold On Dear Brother" rollicks along like a Band song. The latter two are Chaplin/Fataar co-writes and it's fascinating to hear the band bring in new influences to their established sound. Add in a couple of heavily orchestrated Dennis Wilson ballads along with a gospel jam ("He Come Down") and a lovely bit of sunshine (All of This Is That"), and it makes for a confusing, quite interesting album that was a commercial flop. The band responded by moving their families and all their studio equipment to Holland to record their next album. Though it was released in 1973, Holland has the same loose feel as "So Tough," though Chaplin and Fataar are more fully integrated into the group. Chaplin even takes lead on the single "Sail On Sailor." With Brian Wilson mostly out of the picture -- working on his weird bedroom fantasy "Mount Vernon and Fairway" -- both Dennis and Carl Wilson show off their writing and producing skills. Dennis shines with the entrancing bit of psychedelic Americana "Steamboat," and Carl's politically poetic "The Trader" beats the Band at their own game. Both of these odd albums are here in crisp new mixes along with a raft of backing tracks, session tapes, and outtakes. Some legendary lost songs, like the heart-rending Dennis-penned ballad "Carry Me Home," get their first official release and a few tracks show up that would have been good additions to either album. Brian's country-rocker "Out in the Country" is presented in two rough versions -- pity they were never combined and finished. Their goof on the Spencer Davis Group's classic "Gimme Some Lovin" is all kinds of fun, combining a rickety drum machine with some truly loose vocal work. The live show included on the box set is also quite enjoyable. It was recorded at the end of the year for a planned album that never happened and captures the band in full hippie rock flight. They sound loose but tight, ripping through current songs, deep cuts, and the inevitable hits presided over by Mike Love at his cranky best. It's a shame it wasn't released at the time, but it's good that it is finally available in the U.S. A few more live tracks and alternate takes round out the set alongside informative liner notes and photos. The result is a fine archival release that goes a long way toward proving that 1972 wasn't a lost year for the band and that their growing pains and tribulations make for fascinating listening. PROGRESSIVE ROCK

VA - Big Box of Big Prog (A Butterboy Compilation) 5 x Discs + Artwork         REPOST

Progressive rock (shortened as prog; sometimes called art rock, classical rock or symphonic rock) is a broad genre of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom and United States throughout the mid to late 1960s. Initially termed "progressive pop", the style was an outgrowth of psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop traditions in favour of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz, folk, or classical music. Additional elements contributed to its "progressive" label: lyrics were more poetic, technology was harnessed for new sounds, music approached the condition of "art" and the studio, rather than the stage, became the focus of musical activity, which often involved creating music for listening, not dancing. Prog is based on fusions of styles, approaches and genres, involving a continuous move between formalism and eclecticism. Due to its historical reception, prog's scope is sometimes limited to a stereotype of long solos, overlong albums, fantasy lyrics, grandiose stage sets and costumes, and an obsessive dedication to technical skill. While the genre is often cited for its merging of high culture and low culture, few artists incorporated literal classical themes in their work to any great degree, and only a handful of groups purposely emulated or referenced classical music.

The genre coincided with the mid 1960's economic boom that allowed record labels to allocate more creative control to their artists, as well as the new journalistic division between "pop" and "rock" that lent generic significance to both terms. Prog saw a high level of popularity in the early-to-mid 1970's but faded soon after. Conventional wisdom holds that the rise of punk rock caused this, but several more factors contributed to the decline. Music critics, who often labelled the concepts as "pretentious" and the sounds as "pompous" and "overblown", tended to be hostile towards the genre or to completely ignore it. After the late 1970's, progressive rock fragmented in numerous forms. Some bands achieved commercial success well into the 1980's (albeit with changed line-ups and more compact song structures) or crossed into symphonic pop, arena rock, or new wave.

Early groups who exhibited progressive features are retroactively described as "proto prog". The Canterbury scene, originating in the late 1960's, denoted a subset of prog bands who emphasised the use of wind instruments, complex chord changes and long improvisations. Rock in Opposition, from the late 1970's, was more avant-garde, and when combined with the Canterbury style, created Avant-prog. In the 1980's, a new subgenre, neo-progressive rock, enjoyed some commercial success, although it was also accused of being derivative and lacking in innovation. Post-progressive draws upon newer developments in popular music and the avant-garde since the mid 1970's. (Wikipedia)

==================================================

This is the first volume of Progressive rock box sets planned, originally posted in 2019. Future boxes will use shorter tracks and will be broken down into various Progressive Rock sub genres. To get the ball rolling this one is called "BIG BOX of BIG PROG".

For those who are interested, the artwork used for this box set are extracts from original oil paintings that I have painted. They are from a series of artworks that were commissioned by a surrealist collector friend. I think they fit well with the mood of this box set. The artwork set also has included, a small track by track summary for each track. Front and back covers are included.

I have tried to keep tracks by my favourite Prog Rock bands to a minimal. I could include many more from Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Spock's Beard .... but have tried to include works with the aim of showing how rich and varied this genre is. Each of these tracks are epic in proportion and musicality. There are only 50 tracks here, but they are long tracks with the shortest being only 6:25 long and the longest track running at 49:33. In total there is nearly 14 hours of wonderful Progressive Rock masterpieces to open your mind and hearts.

You don’t have to listen to these all-in-one session (probably a ridiculous thing to do and certainly requires patience. I did, many times over, in preparing this box set and did not feel mentally crowded.) I do hope that with each listen you will be delighted by what you find here. Are you brave enough? Do not fear, this may well be one of the best Epic Progressive Rock compilations you will find.

FIRST HEARD

VA - You Heard It Here First! Vol. 01 [2008] + You Heard It Here First! Vol. 02 [2010] (2 x CDs)

VA - You Heard It Here First! Vol. 01 [2008]           2008 collection containing 26 original versions of some of the most enduring classics of the '50s and '60s. These tracks embrace some of the greatest Country, Soul, Pop, Rock 'N' Roll and R&B tunes ever recorded. Some of these originals are well known, others are hardly known at all. Most people with a passion for Rock 'N' Roll will know that Richard Berry wrote and recorded the original 'Louie Louie', but hardly anyone will know that the Kingston Trio and Mark James did 'Get Together' and 'Suspicious Minds' before the Youngbloods and Elvis Presley did. Hear how 'Rock Around the Clock' sounded three years before Bill Haley and the Comets got to it, or how the Crickets 'I Fought the Law' almost half a decade before the Bobby Fuller Four and 15 years before the Clash did. Find out where Led Zeppelin acquired the source material for 'Whole Lotta Love' and the Animals got 'Baby Let Me Take You Home' from. Marvel at how closely the later hit versions were often modeled on these originals, and wonder how come they weren't hits in their own right. Ace Records. 2008.

VA - You Heard It Here First! Vol. 02 [2010]          Here are another two dozen tracks that mostly went unheard and unheeded on release, only for someone else's second attempt to take them high into the Hot 100. Here are the original recordings of, or templates for, such iconic US hits as `Hush', `Cold Sweat', `The Lion Sleeps Tonight', `California Dreamin'', `Bend Me Shape Me' and more, all as you have probably never heard them.  The majority of these recordings are as good as, if not better than, the hit versions that followed in their wake. Many will be a revelation to those who bought and have long cherished those hit versions. At least half of them have never been reissued before, much less appeared on CD. (Amazon)

As ever, Ace Records must be congratulated on another marvellous concept, which deserves further exploration and hopefully a couple of follow-up volumes. This is a fascinating look at pop history with the usual recording quality and informative booklet that one comes to expect from Ace Records.

Hank Mobley - Complete Blue Note Fifties Sessions [1998] (6 x CDs)

JAZZ SUNDAY

HANK MOBLEY

Hank Mobley - Complete Blue Note Fifties Sessions [1998] (6 x CDs)

The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions is limited edition box set that was released by Mosaic Records in 1998.

This is a typically remarkable box set from Mosaic. The six-CD limited-edition package has all of tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's recordings as a leader for Blue Note from a three-year period, all of the music originally included in the albums titled The Hank Mobley Quartet, Hank Mobley Sextet, Hank Mobley & His All-Stars, Hank Mobley Quintet, Hank, Hank Mobley, Curtain Call, Poppin', and Peckin' Time; not a lot of imagination went into these records' original titles. There is only one previously unissued selection (the alternate take of "Barrel of Funk"), but two of the albums were only out previously in Japan, and most of the others had not been previously available on CD. Mobley, an underrated player with a distinctive sound (influenced at times by Sonny Rollins), would continue to grow as an improviser and composer throughout the 1960s, but even on his earliest date here, he is a strong (if unsung) soloist. Featured along with the leader is a who's who of 1950s hard bop, including trumpeters Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Bill Hardman, Kenny Dorham, and Art Farmer, pianists Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Sonny Clark, and Wynton Kelly, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassists Doug Watkins, Paul Chambers, Wilbur Ware, and Jimmy Rowser, and drummers Art Blakey, Charlie Persip, Philly Joe Jones, and Art Taylor. A must for Hank Mobley and 1950s Blue Note fans, but this deluxe box (released in 1998) promises to go out of print quickly. (AllMusic review by Scott Yanow)

VA - Gary Crowley's Lost 80s Vol. 01 [2019] + Gary Crowley's Lost 80s Vol. 02 [2021] (8 x CDs)

LOST 80's

VA - Gary Crowley's Lost 80s Vol. 01 [2019] + Gary Crowley's Lost 80s Vol. 02 [2021] (8 x CDs)

VA - Gary Crowley's Lost 80s Vol. 01 [2019]          Lost 80s presents 63 tracks compiled and themed by Gary Crowley disc by disc, from 'Jingly Jangly' indie-pop 7"s to the extended 12" that so much marked the era. Many of these tracks are rare and very hard to find having not appeared on any CDs before. The better-known artists appearing here are represented by some of their lesser known ('lost') tracks. "The 80s (and especially the first part) was an amazing time for music. It was a mad, fast, kaleidoscopic rollercoaster ride where the chancers taking your money not only walked the walk; they backed it up with innovative, amazing tunes that changed the way music was made forever. That's certainly how I remember it..." Gary Crowley Presented in a beautiful 4CD media book, featuring 40 pages of Gary's track by track notes, plus memories of the era from Nick Heyward (Haircut 100), Sarah Dallin (Bananarama), Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) Annabella Lwin (Bow Wow Wow), Clare Grogan (Altered Images) and more. "So here, spread over these four CDs, I've collected together the best (in my personal opinion) of the guitar bands, the dance acts and the synth groups that made up the soundtrack of that gloriously thrilling decade for me and my friends. As well as some of its most memorable 12-inch remixes. Let me just state for the record, you'll find no Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, Duran Duran, Dire Straits or the like appearing on these discs…"

Gary Crowley has done a great job here pulling together overlooked gems with lesser known tracks from some big names of the 80s. It's not meant to be a 'best of the 80s' (you won't have to look far to find those) but instead a place to discover bands like Fantastic Something, the Questions and April Showers whose lack of success doesn't mean they're not worthy of inclusion here. (Amazon)

VA - Gary Crowley's Lost 80s Vol. 02 [2021]          The follow up the successful Gary Crowley's Lost 80s released in 2019. "I count myself incredibly lucky when I think back to my 1980's. A lot of those bands and artists that resonated with me during that time are featured on this, our sequel to our first Lost 80s collection, which we have inspiringly titled "GC Lost 80s Two"! I must be honest and say as soon as I delivered the track listing for the first compilation, I already had a selection in mind for a sequel (if ever I was asked by those cool folks at Demon). Thankfully, they asked... and this is it." Gary Crowley. 65 tracks compiled and themed by Gary Crowley disc by disc. Many of these tracks are rare and hard to find having not appeared on CD before. The better-known artists appearing here are represented by some of their lesser-known ('lost') tracks. Presented as a media book and including a 32-page book. Includes an introduction and track-by-track notes by Gary Crowley, plus memories of the era from Mick Talbot (The Style Council), Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister), Dr Robert (The Blow Monkeys) Glenn Gregory (Heaven 17) Andy Polaris (Animal Nightlife) and more. "Expect a selection of not only the bigger names with some of their 'lost' gems, but also a raft of lesser-known artists. Many of the latter came nowhere near the mainstream but most certainly (IMHO) deserve another chance to shine under the spotlight. It was such a diverse and eclectic time for music, hopefully this box set mirrors that." Gary Crowley. (Amazon)
