Muffins - Baker's Dozen [2022] (12 x CDs)

ROCK

Muffins - Baker's Dozen [2022] (12 x CDs)

The Muffins were an American Maryland-based progressive rock/avant-jazz group. They were formed in Washington, DC in the early 1970s and recorded four albums before disbanding in 1981.  In 1998 the group reformed and recorded a further five albums and a DVD. The Muffins played at Symphony Space on Broadway in NYC with Marion Brown in 1979, and also performed at a number of festivals, starting with the ZU Manifestival in New York City in 1978, The Villa Celimontana festival in Rome, Italy in 2000, two appearances at Progday in 2001 and 2002, NEARfest in 2005, and the "Rock in Opposition" festival in France in 2009. In 2010, the Muffins headlined at Progday, making a third appearance at this long running festival.

The Muffins are largely an instrumental band inspired and influenced by avant-garde jazz, progressive rock, 20th-century music, and the English Canterbury scene. They work in an "underground genre" (Wikipedia)

Released by Cuneiform,  Records Baker’s Dozen is less a retrospective than a long, carefully opened drawer, one that reveals how much ground The Muffins quietly covered over decades. Issued in 2022, the 12-CD plus DVD set gathers almost entirely unreleased live and studio recordings spanning from the mid-1970s into the 2010s, and it plays like a parallel history of the band running alongside their official albums.

What stands out immediately is how alive the material feels. Early recordings capture a group already comfortable juggling knotty written passages and free-moving improvisation, with winds and electric instruments threading through playful, sometimes prickly structures. As the set unfolds disc by disc, the music never settles into a single identity. There are stretches that lean into Canterbury-adjacent whimsy, others that drift toward jazz-rock elasticity, and moments where the band simply opens the doors and lets collective improvisation take the wheel. The sequencing does real work here, allowing those shifts to feel conversational rather than chaotic.

Because the material spans so many years, patterns begin to surface naturally. Certain melodic instincts recur, rhythmic ideas resurface in new guises, and the band’s fondness for surprise remains constant even as the sound matures. Later recordings feel more assured but no less curious, and the live performances remind how much of The Muffins’ character lived in interaction, timing, and quick turns taken together onstage. The included NEARFest footage reinforces that sense of immediacy, showing a group still energized by risk.

By the end, Baker’s Dozen feels complete in a way few archival sets do. Nothing here reads as padding or obligation. Instead, it offers a deep, generous listen into a band that always treated composition and exploration as equal partners, and whose unreleased work turns out to be every bit as essential as what made it to vinyl and CD the first time around. Spending time with this collection highlights what makes The Muffins distinctive. A beautifully crafted testament to one of American music’s most enduring and overlooked treasures. (B)

Another one from Cpt. Hatemonger's personal collection, and he hopes they all have a wonderful time listening☺️

LENE LOVICH - Lene Lovich - A BOX OF Lene Lovich [1978-1990] (15 x CDs)

LENE LOVICH

Lene Lovich - A BOX OF Lene Lovich [1978-1990] (15 x CDs)

Lili-Marlene Premilovich, known professionally as Lene Lovich, was born on March 30, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan. At 13, she moved to England with her mother and siblings due to her father's health issues. In England, she met guitarist and songwriter Les Chappell, who would become her long-time collaborator and life partner. Lovich developed a keen interest in art and theater, enrolling at the Central School of Art and Design, where she also took saxophone lessons.

In 1975, Lovich joined the band the Diversions and shortly afterward wrote the lyrics to Cerrone's single "Supernature." After the band broke up, she recorded a demo of "I Think We're Alone Now," which led to her signing with Stiff Records. Her debut studio album, "Stateless" (1978), featured the hit single "Lucky Number," which peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart and established her as a leading figure in the new wave music scene.

Lovich's musical style combined quirky inventions with contemporary punk rock and new wave styles. She released two more albums on Stiff Records: "Flex" (1979) and "No Man's Land" (1982). In 1989, she independently released the album "March" before taking a 15-year hiatus to focus on her family. She returned in 2005 with the album "Shadows and Dust."

Throughout her career, Lovich has been known for her distinctive vocal style and her visual trademark of plaited hair. She continues to perform and record music, maintaining her status as an influential figure in the new wave and post-punk music scenes.

In 2013, Lovich established her own publishing label, Flex Music, and released a re-mastered version of all her previous albums in a limited edition box set. She also began performing with a new band, marking the first time that Les Chappell was not part of her band. The Lene Lovich Band made its live debut in 2012 and has since undertaken several tours, including a major European tour in 2014.

Lovich's influence extends beyond her music. She has been involved in various artistic endeavors, including theater and film. She co-wrote and performed in the play "Mata Hari" in 1982 and appeared in the film "Cha Cha" alongside Nina Hagen and Herman Brood. Lovich has also been an advocate for animal rights, participating in benefit concerts for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and contributing to the opera "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Peter Hammill and Judge Smith.

Lene Lovich's unique blend of music, art, and activism has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape, and she continues to inspire new generations of artists and musicians.

Lovich's music has been reissued by Rhino Records, bringing her unique sound to new generations of listeners. One notable reissue is the album "Flex...Plus," released in 1991. This reissue includes the original tracks from her 1979 album "Flex," as well as additional bonus tracks from the "New Toy" EP and the "No Man's Land" album. The reissue of "Flex...Plus" features remastered versions of Lovich's songs, providing improved sound quality while preserving the original essence of her music. The album includes popular tracks like "Bird Song," "The Night," and "New Toy," showcasing Lovich's distinctive vocal style and innovative approach to new wave music.

In addition to "Flex...Plus," Rhino Records has also reissued other albums by Lovich, including "Stateless" and "March." These reissues have been well-received by fans and critics alike, who appreciate the opportunity to revisit Lovich's influential work with enhanced audio quality. The reissues often come with detailed liner notes and additional content, such as Lovich's comments on each track, providing fans with deeper insights into her creative process and the stories behind her music. Overall, the Rhino reissues have played a significant role in preserving and celebrating Lene Lovich's legacy, ensuring that her innovative contributions to the new wave and post-punk music scenes continue to be appreciated by both long-time fans and new listeners.

Lovich's interviews reveal a fascinating insight into her creative process and her views on the music industry. In a 1983 interview she discussed her approach to songwriting and her desire to create music that is both innovative and accessible. She emphasized the importance of maintaining artistic integrity and staying true to her vision, even if it meant going against mainstream trends.

In a 1980 documentary, Lovich and her collaborator Les Chappell shared their experiences of working together and the challenges they faced in the music industry. Lovich's passion for her craft and her dedication to pushing boundaries were evident throughout the interview. She spoke about her influences, including her love for theater and visual arts, and how these elements shaped her music and performances.

A 1986 interview highlighted Lovich's thoughts on the evolving music scene and her role within it. She expressed her belief in the power of music to bring about social change and her commitment to using her platform to raise awareness about important issues, such as animal rights.

Overall, Lovich's interviews provide a deeper understanding of her as an artist and a person. Her unique blend of creativity, authenticity, and activism continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world. (B)

Garth Hudson - Our Lady Queen Of The Angels (A Celebrational Environment by Tony Duquette) [1980] + Garth Hudson - The Sea To The North [2001]

GARTH HUDSON

Garth Hudson - Our Lady Queen Of The Angels (A Celebrational Environment by Tony Duquette) [1980] + Garth Hudson - The Sea To The North [2001]

Eric Garth Hudson CM (August 2, 1937 - January 21, 2025) was a Canadian multi-instrumentalist best known as the keyboardist and occasional saxophonist for the rock group The Band, for which he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a principal architect of the group's sound and was described as "the most brilliant organist in the rock world" by Keyboard magazine. Hudson was the last living original member of the Band.

A master of the Lowrey organ, Hudson's other primary instruments were piano, accordion, electronic keyboards, and saxophones (alto, tenor, soprano, baritone, bass).[3] He was a much-in-demand and respected session musician, performing with dozens of artists, including Elton John, who has cited him as an early influence. (Wikipedia)

Garth Hudson - The Sea To The North [2001]   It wasn't too hard to guess that Garth Hudson's long-awaited solo album would be a tour de force; his virtuoso instrumental talents stood out even in that legendary group of musicians known as the Band. What may surprise listeners, however, is the sheer scope of sound on this effort, with Hudson playing an intimidating range of keyboards (including pipe organ), various saxophones, accordion, melodica, and Tarogato. Each track is a sonic adventure, the hapless listener unsure of what lies around the next bend. Several centuries of music and continents seem embedded in the elegiac title track ("composition" is a better word for music of this scope), while "The Saga of Cyrus and Mulgrew" is boldly futuristic. Later years found the erstwhile members of the Band occasionally digging into the Grateful Dead's catalog, and Hudson is no exception, doing a free jazzy take on "Dark Star" on which he even offers some spoken vocals. Members of that sterling Woodstock, NY, band the Crowmatix show up here, with prominent appearances by group leader Professor "Louie" (aka Aaron Hurwitz), who co-produces. Hudson's old bandmate Levon Helm shows up as well. This is startlingly spontaneous music with a brain (a very big brain), and it's not for the faint of heart or the average pop fan. And that's a great thing. (AllMusic review by Erik Hage)

Garth Hudson - Our Lady Queen Of The Angels (A Celebrational Environment by Tony Duquette) [1980]   In 1980, Garth Hudson was involved in a project with sculptor Tony Duquette, at the Los Angeles Museum of Science and Industry. The music that Garth wrote and played for this exhibition was recorded, and Garth released it on tape under the title Our Lady Queen of the Angels (subtitled "A Celebrational Environment by Tony Duquette") on his own label Buscador Music as EGH (Eric Garth Hudson) 770.

Garth does some beautiful, haunting keyboard work. Some of it is shear wizardry in sound effects, considering the computer and synth technology available at the time of the recording. A few of the sounds on Our Lady Queen of the Angels are not instruments, but Maud Hudson and Richard and Arlie Manuel "singing" to sound like instruments, along with a variety of Californian Wren calls with stream-side and pool-side frogs recorded by Hudson himself in Malibu. In the middle of it, Charlton Heston reads a poem to Los Angeles written by Ray Bradbury.

According to the Duquette Foundation of the Living Arts, the cassette tapes are no longer available, due to a tragic fire in 1989.

Our Lady... was finally released on CD by the Canadian Other Peoples Music label in November 2005. The CD follows the original cassette-only sequence and was restored and remastered from the original 1980 recordings. (Discogs)
