CLASSICAL

VA - Chopin - Complete Edition [2009] (17 x CDs)

Frédéric Chopin was born near Warsaw in 1810 and became one of the defining voices of the Romantic era. Trained at the Warsaw Conservatory, he left Poland at twenty and settled in Paris, where his poetic piano works made him a central figure in the city’s salons. He wrote almost exclusively for solo piano, creating nocturnes, mazurkas, études, and ballades that blended Polish folk rhythm with refined lyricism. His music expanded the instrument’s expressive range and remains a cornerstone of piano repertoire. Chopin’s health was fragile, and he died in Paris in 1849 at thirty‑nine, leaving behind a body of work that continues to embody grace, emotion, and national pride.

He has maintained worldwide renown as a leading musician of his era, one whose "poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation."

For anyone stepping into Chopin for the first time, this Complete Edition from Deutsche Grammophon is one of the clearest and most generous introductions you can choose. It gathers his entire published output across seventeen discs, arranged in a way that lets the listener move through his world without confusion. Each genre sits in its own space, allowing you to hear how Chopin shaped melody, rhythm and emotion across different forms.

The set opens with the piano concertos, played with a sense of clarity that helps new listeners understand Chopin’s early voice. From there, the edition moves into the Ballades, Nocturnes, Études, Mazurkas, Polonaises and Preludes, each performed by pianists who bring their own character to the music. This variety is one of the box’s strengths. You hear Chopin through different hands, each illuminating a different part of his writing, the lyrical lines, the quiet reflections, the bursts of energy, the moments where dance rhythm becomes something deeper.

The larger works, including the Sonatas and Scherzos, show Chopin thinking in broader shapes, while the chamber pieces and songs reveal a more intimate side. Across the set, the performances are chosen with care, the recordings span decades of thoughtful interpretation, and the presentation is clear and inviting.

For a newcomer, this box is more than a collection. It is a guided path through Chopin’s world, shaped by musicians who understand the balance of lyricism, restraint and emotional depth at the heart of his music. It is considered top‑tier because it combines completeness, strong performances and careful curation in a way few Chopin editions match. If you are beginning your journey, this is a place where everything is laid out with clarity, allowing you to discover Chopin at your own pace. (B)

Iannis Xenakis - Orchestral Works Vol. 1-5 [2009] (5 x CDs) + VA - Tribute to Iannis Xenakis [2007]

CLASSICAL

Iannis Xenakis - Orchestral Works Vol. 1-5 [2009] (5 x CDs) + VA - Tribute to Iannis Xenakis [2007]

Iannis Xenakis was a Greek‑French composer, architect and mathematician whose work reshaped the possibilities of twentieth‑century music. Born in 1922, he survived war, exile and injury before settling in Paris, where he worked with Le Corbusier while developing a radical new approach to sound. Xenakis treated music as physical material shaped by mathematical processes, drawing on probability theory, set theory and architectural thinking to create structures that felt monumental in scale. His early electroacoustic pieces, including Diamorphoses and Concret PH, reveal his fascination with density, transformation and the sculptural qualities of noise.

Across the 1960s and 1970s, Xenakis expanded his vision through the Polytopes, immersive environments combining light, architecture and electronic sound. Works such as Persepolis and La Légende d’Eer remain defining examples of large‑scale electroacoustic composition. In later years he embraced computer‑generated sound, creating algorithmic works like Gendy 3 and S.709 that pushed electronic music into new territory. Xenakis died in 2001, but his influence continues to grow, sustained by careful reissues that preserve the clarity and intensity of his groundbreaking creations.

This 5-CD Timpani collection gathers the complete orchestral cycle Xenakis recorded with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg under Arturo Tamayo, documented across sessions from 2000 to 2006 and issued as a unified box set in 2009. It presents the full span of his orchestral imagination, from the explosive breakthroughs of the 1950s to the monumental late works of the 1980s and early 1990s. The set feels like an architectural survey, each disc revealing a different phase of a composer who shaped sound through mathematics, engineering and lived experience.

The early works on the final disc, including Metastaseis, Pithoprakta, Achorripsis and Syrmos, show Xenakis’s language forming in real time. Glissandi rise and fall like mechanical sirens, clusters expand and contract with physical force, and the orchestra becomes a single mass in motion. These pieces remain among the most radical orchestral statements of the twentieth century. The middle discs trace his mature voice. Jonchaies, Antikhthon, Shaar and Lichens reveal vast planes of strings, winds and percussion shaped with precision. The piano concertos Synaphaï and Erikhthon add another dimension, the soloist cutting through the ensemble with lines that feel carved rather than played. The late works, often described as monolithic, gain clarity in Tamayo’s readings, their heavy blocks of sound placed with intention rather than weight.

Across all five discs, the Luxembourg players meet the demands of Xenakis’s scores with discipline and intensity. Interpretations are exact and unflinching, allowing the architecture of his writing to emerge with clarity. The mastering preserves the grain of the recordings without smoothing their edges. As a whole, the box set stands as the most complete portrait of Xenakis’s orchestral world, a place where mathematics becomes motion and the orchestra becomes an engine of elemental force. (B)

As a bonus, I have included VA – Tribute to Iannis Xenakis [2007], a digital‑only collection of seven exclusive compositions created as musical dedications to Xenakis. Each piece was written specifically for this release, reflecting the influence of his ideas on a wide range of contemporary composers. The set stands as a small but thoughtful companion to the larger body of work, offering individual responses to Xenakis’s legacy through new sound worlds shaped in his honour.

Cristiano Porqueddu - Gilardino, Complete Music for Solo Guitar 1965 - 2013 [2015] (14 x CDs)

CLASSICAL GUITAR

Cristiano Porqueddu - Gilardino, Complete Music for Solo Guitar 1965 - 2013 [2015] (14 x CDs)

It’s easy to approach Complete Music for Solo Guitar 1965–2013 as a document, but it settles more naturally as a long-form listening experience. Performed by Cristiano Porqueddu and dedicated to the works of Angelo Gilardino, 14-CD set gathers decades of writing for solo guitar into a single, continuous space.

The recordings do not push forward in a linear way. Instead, they open gradually, one piece leading into another with a quiet sense of connection. Early works sit alongside later compositions without sharp contrast, the shifts in style appearing through detail rather than statement. A passage built on clear melodic lines gives way to something more reflective, then returns again in a slightly altered form.

What holds the set together is the consistency of touch. Porqueddu’s playing remains measured and controlled, allowing the structure of each piece to come through without emphasis. The guitar itself becomes the centre of the listening, not as a display of technique but as a steady voice moving through different ideas.

Across the full span, the pacing encourages patience. Some pieces settle quickly, others take longer to reveal their shape, especially when heard in sequence. The repetition of tone, phrasing, and space creates a continuity that connects works written decades apart.

By the time the final pieces arrive, the set feels less like a survey and more like a sustained reflection on the instrument. It does not draw attention to milestones or changes, it allows them to appear naturally within the flow.

Left to play, it becomes a quiet, continuous thread, one that returns to the same instrument, the same voice, and finds variation there without needing to move beyond it. (B)
