VA - Decameron, Ten Days In 100 Novellas, Parts 1-3 [2011-2016] (12 CDs)

PROGRESSIVE FOLK ROCK

VA - Decameron, Ten Days In 100 Novellas, Parts 1-3 [2011-2016] (12 CDs)

Released between 2011 and 2016 through the ongoing collaboration between the Finnish progressive-rock collective Colossus, Musea Records, Seacrest Oy, and Visual Power, the three volumes of Decameron, Ten Days In 100 Novellas form an extraordinary twelve-disc exploration of progressive folk, acid folk, pastoral psychedelia, underground pop, and progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and the wider progressive underground.

Taking inspiration from Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, a collection of interconnected stories told over ten days, the series approaches compilation-making as a narrative art, where each track contributes to a larger journey of discovery.

Rather than relying on obvious classics, the compilers balance recognised artists with forgotten albums, private-press rarities, and overlooked recordings. Familiar names provide occasional landmarks, but the real pleasure lies in the unexpected connections that emerge between tracks. Songs separated by years, countries, or styles often feel as though they belong in the same conversation, linked by mood, imagination, and a shared spirit of exploration.

Acoustic folk melodies, intricate vocal harmonies, progressive arrangements, and psychedelic textures appear throughout the set. Mellotrons drift through pastoral landscapes, acoustic guitars intertwine with chamber-pop flourishes, and moments of quiet reflection give way to passages of musical adventure. The sequencing is central to the experience. Each disc unfolds with patience, allowing contrasts and relationships to reveal themselves naturally rather than announcing them outright.

What ultimately distinguishes Decameron is its ability to create a world rather than simply document a genre. The music evokes landscapes, stories, seasons, and states of mind, drawing the listener into an alternative history of the progressive underground. Across twelve discs, the collection rewards curiosity and attentive listening, demonstrating how thoughtful curation can transform individual recordings into something greater than the sum of their parts. Rich in atmosphere, musical invention, and discovery, Decameron stands as a remarkable achievement in the art of compilation. (B)

ACID FOLK

VA - Global Acid Folk, Echoes of the Hidden Grove (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

Building on the mystical thread of my previous Acid Folk compilation titled Chronicles of the Woven Vale, this new Butterboy compilation is more audacious in scope, a spiritual expedition across continents, era-defying in its selection, yet tethered by a mood of hushed reverence. Echoes of the Hidden Grove unfolds like a spectral map, guiding listeners through lesser-known tributaries of the global acid folk and psych terrain.

Acid folk first found voice in the countercultural bloom of the late 1960s, where artists blended pastoral roots with experimental textures. But here, in Echoes of the Hidden Grove, the sound blossoms outward, encompassing not just psychedelic flourishes but the ancestral pulse of local rhythms, mythic storytelling, and modal explorations. These are songs that defy borders, unfolding from handmade instruments and whispered tongues, often recorded with little more than heart, tape, and windlight. With this compilation you're looking at a set that vibrates with global resonance and deep-cut magic, this is the kind of compilation crate-diggers whisper about.

Out of the 92 tracks in Echoes of the Hidden Grove, this set holds at least 38 very rare tracks, true rarities. That includes long-lost pressings (like Extradition’s Hush, issued in 1971 on Australia’s Sweet Peach Records and reissued decades later), private label releases (Ton Vlasman’s White Room With Disintegrating Walls, a Dutch acid folk grail originally pressed in minuscule quantities), and censored or forgotten classics from pre-revolution Iran (Mehrpouya’s hypnotic “Soul Raga” and Pooneh’s spectral “Hamisheh Tanha”).

Labels range from Guerssen in Spain to Lyra Records in Greece, Zodiac, Polydor, and Uptight Records, all responsible for releasing psychedelic acid folk that vanished from mainstream view.

In terms of countries, the range is staggering with 31 countries represented:

Europe: Ireland, UK, Wales, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Greece, Iceland

Middle East & Asia: Iran, Israel, Turkey, Japan, South Korea

Americas: USA, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Venezuela, Canada

Africa: South Africa

Oceania: Australia

Each track carries its region’s spirit, whether it’s the modal melancholy of Piirpauke’s “Konevitsan kirkonkellot” (Finland), the jazz-infused psych from Abstract Truth (South Africa), or the Kabbalistic Mediterranean swirl of Zingale (Israel). This isn't just global, it’s planetary acid folk storytelling. This is a map of acid folk’s secret history, a grove where mossy introspection from Athens sits comfortably beside trance raga from Tehran or eucalyptus-haunted chants from Sydney.

What this set does is collapse borders through emotion. The songs act as spells, some lull, some stir, some question reality altogether. For the listener, it’s not just a journey, it’s a communion with forgotten truths buried in moss, moonlight, and myth, delivering a soundtrack to the soul’s secret forest. (B)

ACID FOLK

VA - Acid Folk, Chronicles of the Woven Vale (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3+ Bonus

Acid folk, often called psychedelic folk or freak folk emerged in the mid-to-late 1960s like mist rising from the forest floor. It blurred traditional balladry with hypnotic instrumentation, modal tunings, and lyrics that felt conjured rather than composed. You might hear sitars next to dulcimers, voices echoing like incantations, and melodies that seem unearthed rather than written. This wasn’t folk with flowers, it was folk with shadows, spells, and surreal devotion.

Early boundary-breakers like Donovan, The Holy Modal Rounders, and The Incredible String Band laid the groundwork, with ISB’s The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion often cited as a defining work. In your compilation, Way Back in the 1960s stands as a whimsical and satirical relic from that album, sly, playful, and dripping with countercultural reverence. Other cornerstone artists like Comus (Diana), Trees (The Garden of Jane Delawney), and Forest (A Fantasy You) and (Graveyard) helped steer folk music into visionary, ritualistic terrain.

The genre never exploded commercially, but it built a devoted cult following. By the late ’70s, it mostly vanished, living quietly in private pressings and dusty record store corners delighted by cult circles, diggers of forgotten vinyl.

Across 63 core tracks and 21 bonus selections, this is not just a listening experience, it's a living archive. Many entries are genuine rarities. Take "Prisoner" by Marie Celeste, a fragile track from a UK private press that floats somewhere between séance and lullaby. Or "If Words Were All I Had" by Bobb Trimble,a home-recorded masterpiece of outsider melancholy. There’s "Epitaph" by Oberon, pulled from their near-mythical 1971 LP, and "Sea Song" by Caedmon, glimmering with medieval modernism. "Dancing at Whitsun" by Stone Angel, a quietly devastating reflection on war and remembrance, is another deeply buried treasure now restored to light. And then there’s "I Feel the Sun" by Extradition, an Australian gem that opens like a sun prayer and ends like a breeze through ancient gums.

To listen to acid folk is to leave the road and follow mossy paths through story, sound, and spirit. It’s not just a genre, it’s a gateway. And once you cross through, something in you changes.

As a Bonus I have included a 21-track compilation titled VA - Proto Acid Folk, Before the Bloom (A Butterboy Compilation)

This compilation doesn’t just anticipate acid folk, it listens for it in the distance, like birdsong before rain.

Before acid folk unfurled into phantasmagoric pastoralism, a quieter revolution brewed in the margins. Drawing exclusively from tracks recorded before 1967, proto acid folk emerged between 1962-1966 as a spectral whisper of psychedelia meeting tradition, haunting modal guitar lines, mystical lyricism, and esoteric ballads delivered with emotional rawness.

Artists like Anne Briggs, Bert Jansch, and Joan Baez offer stark acoustic meditations, rooted in centuries-old melodies and delivered with emotional precision. Paired with avant-garde folk voices like Sandy Bull and the Holy Modal Rounders, whose experiments with form and tuning break the boundary between tradition and surrealism, the set captures a transitional moment in folk music’s evolution.

Lyrical sorrow, environmental dread, and mystical longing are recurring themes, from Bonnie Dobson’s apocalyptic "Morning Dew" to Karen Dalton’s fractured lament "Katie Cruel", each track whispers at the threshold of deeper psychedelic transformation. The sequencing arcs gracefully: starting with Appalachian lament and folk purity, moving through experimental cadence and poetic narrative, and culminating with the Incredible String Band’s "October Song", a quiet prophecy of the acid folk era to come. ACID FOLK

VA - California Acid Folk [1981]

California Acid Folk (Penguin Records, 1981) isn’t just a bootleg, it’s a portal. It opens with a 1967 Byrds radio session that’s all shimmer and shadow, then slides into Country Weather’s smoky demos. Kaleidoscope’s live set from Berkeley twists acid folk into Middle Eastern spirals, and pulls you deeper with Lowell George, Gram Parsons, and more offbeat companions.

Despite its scrappy origins, it’s stitched together with curatorial care. You don’t just hear songs, you feel the undercurrent of California’s psychedelic folk roots bending into garage, country-rock, and the avant-garde. It’s a sonic flea market full of ghosts. (B)
