Sub-titled A musical equivalent, This set began as a response to reading Amazing Stories, and more specifically Beyond the Veil of Time by B. H. Barney (1932). The comic does not overwhelm with dialogue or explanation, instead, it opens a conceptual space. Its ideas arrive quietly, through suggestion rather than instruction, and that restraint was what stayed with me. Reading it felt less like consuming a story and more like entering a state of attention, where illusion, belief, and scientific explanation coexist without immediately cancelling each other out.

I found that ambient music felt like the natural companion to that experience. Not as illustration, nor as a cinematic soundtrack, but as a parallel process. Like the comic, ambient music operates in a liminal space: it suspends conventional temporality, foregrounds texture over narrative and invites the listener into an active engagement with sound and duration. The tracks here unfold slowly, often in subtle layers, creating an environment where perception itself becomes elastic.

The pieces were chosen to move alongside the ideas suggested by the comic rather than its plot. Early selections carry momentum and curiosity, echoing the initial sense of discovery. As the set progresses, structure loosens and sound becomes less assertive, mirroring the way the comic questions the boundary between magic and method. What begins as fascination gradually shifts toward reflection, where explanation does not remove mystery but reframes it. Through drones, minimal motifs, and sustained textures, the listener is invited to inhabit a temporal space that is contemplative rather than prescriptive.

This compilation is meant to be read with as much as it is listened to. It can sit in the background during the act of reading, or it can function afterward, as a way of re-entering the atmosphere the comic creates. In that sense, it is not an adaptation but a continuation. The music becomes another layer of the same inquiry, one that unfolds in time rather than panels. Its intention is to extend attention, to encourage subtle noticing, and to create a quiet resonance that amplifies the comic’s speculative impulse.

Ultimately, this set exists as an extension of the reading experience, a space where sound, idea, and duration meet. It treats the comic not as a finished object, but as a point of departure, inviting the listener to remain beyond the veil a little longer. Ambient music, in its restraint and expansiveness, provides a vessel for that continuation. It feels like a conversation in stillness, a continuation of the same speculative impulse, expressed through sound instead of ink. (B)

Erased Tapes Records is a London-based record label established in 2007 by Robert Raths aka Ghostworker. Released across nine volumes between 2008 and 2018, Erased Tapes Collection I–IX functions as a long-form document of a label finding, refining, and ultimately defining its voice. Rather than acting as simple snapshots of a catalogue, these collections trace a gradual evolution, one rooted in restraint, clarity, and an insistence on emotional presence. Heard as a whole, the series reflects how Erased Tapes developed a recognisable identity without locking itself into a fixed sound.

The early volumes establish the foundation. Piano-led works, intimate recording spaces, and a focus on tone and silence set these releases apart from the prevailing trends of the time. The music feels deliberately unhurried, allowing detail and nuance to carry weight. As the series progresses, the scope widens. Electronics become more embedded, ensemble writing grows more confident, and rhythmic elements surface with greater intent. What changes is not the core philosophy, but the vocabulary used to express it.

Sequencing plays a crucial role throughout. Each volume balances contrast and continuity, allowing different approaches to coexist without breaking the overall mood. The collections reward being heard front to back, where subtle shifts in texture and pacing become part of the experience. Across all nine volumes, the emphasis remains on craft and atmosphere, music that invites attention rather than demanding it.

Taken together, Erased Tapes Collection I–IX reads as an archive of a decade in motion. It captures not only individual artists at various points in their development, but also the emergence of a shared aesthetic language, one built on patience, space, and a quietly human sensibility.

Popol Vuh were a German musical collective founded by keyboardist Florian Fricke in 1969 together with Frank Fiedler (sound design), Holger Trülzsch (percussion), and Bettina Fricke (tablas and production). The band took its name from the Mayan manuscript containing the mythology of highland Guatemala's K'iche' people. During the next two decades the membership often alternated, most notably including Djong Yun, Renate Knaup, Conny Veit, Daniel Fichelscher, Klaus Wiese, and Robert Eliscu.

Popol Vuh began as an electronic music project, but under Fricke's leadership they soon abandoned synthesizers for organic instrumentation and world music influences. They developed a productive working partnership with director Werner Herzog, contributing scores to films such as Aguirre, The Wrath of God (1972), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), and Fitzcarraldo (1982). The group are associated with West Germany's 1970s krautrock movement and are considered progenitors of new-age and ambient music. Pitchfork magazine called Hosianna Mantra (1972) Popol Vuh's classic release.

The 2010 box set Popol Vuh - The Werner Herzog Soundtracks is a remarkable collection that showcases the unique collaboration between the German progressive rock band Popol Vuh and acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog. Released by SPV GmbH, this compilation features five CDs that encapsulate the ethereal and haunting soundscapes that became synonymous with Herzog's cinematic masterpieces.

The first album, Aguirre, the Wrath of God, includes the iconic track "Aguirre I," which sets the tone for Herzog's tale of obsession and madness. Popol Vuh's use of the Moog synthesizer creates an otherworldly atmosphere that perfectly complements the film's visuals.

The second album, Heart of Glass, is a testament to Popol Vuh's versatility. Tracks such as "Engel der Gegenwart" employ acoustic instruments and choral arrangements, reflecting the film's surreal and dreamlike quality.

Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht is the third album in the set, featuring tracks like "Brüder des Schattens - Söhne des Lichts." This soundtrack blends gothic and mystical elements, enhancing the eerie and melancholic mood of Herzog's vampire classic.

The fourth album, Cobra Verde rounds out the collection with its tribal rhythms and evocative melodies. Tracks like "Der Tod des Cobra Verde" mirror the film's themes of power and downfall.

Finally, Fitzcarraldo, captures the grandeur and ambition of Herzog's story about a man determined to build an opera house in the Amazon. The soundtrack includes operatic pieces alongside Popol Vuh's compositions, creating a rich auditory experience.

This box set is a window into the creative synergy between Popol Vuh and Werner Herzog. It remains a must-have for fans of experimental music and cinema alike.

The Best of Popol Vuh: From the Films of Werner Herzog [1989]      A match made in cinematic heaven; the meshing of Popol Vuh's grand atmospherics and sonic landscapes with the grand landscapes and near-mythic themes of many of Werner Herzog's films. This collection provides representative selections from the soundtracks to Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu, Gasherbrum, and Cobra Verde. The music falls far enough into the atmospheres and ambient camps that the album is as easily used as a meditational piece as a soundtrack release. Either way, this is beautiful music. "In Pharaoh's Garden"    was the first true work of "sacred music" by Florian Fricke, guiding light of the mythical group Popol Vuh. Consisting of two extended works, his mixture of electronics and church organ with assorted winds and percussives, conjures up visions of the celestial light. Deeply emotional and filled with mysticism, this album marked the dawning of new age music, and still today is a wonder to behold. (AMG review by Archie Patterson)

"Hosianna Mantra"     Florian Fricke pioneered the use of synthesizers in German rock, but by the time of Hosianna Mantra he had abandoned them (eventually selling his famous Moog to Klaus Schulze). While In den Gärten Pharaos had blended synths with piano and African and Turkish percussion, Hosianna Mantra focuses on organic instrumentation. Conny Veit contributes electric guitar, but other than that, Fricke pulls the plug and builds the album around violin, tamboura, piano, oboe, cembalo, and Veit's 12-string, often with Korean soprano Djong Yun's haunting voice hovering above the arrangements. As the album's title suggests, Fricke conceived of Hosianna Mantra as a musical reconciliation of East and West, a harmonization of seemingly opposed terms, combining two devotional music traditions. That notion of cultural hybridity resonates throughout. On "Kyrie" droning tamboura, simple piano patterns, ethereal, gull-like guitars, and yearning oboe ebb and flow before coalescing in a passage of intensity and release. The epic title track adds another dimension to the fusion, emphasizing a Western rock sound with Veit's spectacular playing to the fore, simultaneously smoldering and liquid, occasionally yielding to Djong Yun's celestial vocals. Above all, Fricke envisioned this as sacred music, intimately linked to religious experience; however, as his musical synthesis of disparate religious traditions indicates, he was seeking to foment a spiritual experience beyond the specificity of any particular faith. Indeed, Fricke called this album a "mass for the heart" and that aspect can be heard most succinctly on the melancholy "Abschied" and the gossamer-fragile "Segnung," which blend an austere hymnal sensibility with a more mystical vibe. Julian Cope has said that Hosianna Mantra sounds like it was made in a "cosmic convalescent home" -- an excellent description underscoring the timeless, healing quality of this music, which is far removed from the everyday world and yet at one with it. Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin (born 17 May 1961; anglicised as Enya Patricia Brennan) known mononymously as Enya, is an Irish singer and composer. With an estimated equivalent of over 90 million album sales worldwide, Enya is the best-selling Irish solo artist, and the second best-selling music act from Ireland overall, after the rock band U2. Her music has been widely recognised for its use of multi-layers of her own vocals and instrumentation, lengthened reverb, and interwoven elements of Celtic music. Enya's style defies conventional genre classifications, blending elements of Celtic, New Age, and pop music into something wholly unique. Her ability to transport listeners to otherworldly realms has made her a global icon.

Raised in the Irish-speaking region of Gweedore, Enya began her musical career in 1980 playing alongside her family's Irish folk band Clannad. She left Clannad in 1982 to pursue a solo career, working with the former Clannad manager and producer, Nicky Ryan, and his partner Roma, as their lyricist. Over the following four years, Enya further developed her sound by combining multitracked vocals and keyboards with elements from a variety of musical genres, such as Celtic, classical, church, jazz, hip-hop, ambient, world, and Irish folk. Her earliest solo releases were two piano/synthesiser instrumentals for the Touch Travel T4 cassette compilation (1984) composed around 1982–83. The majority of the soundtrack for The Frog Prince (1985) was originally composed by Enya, and she sang two songs with lyrics for the project. Enya had also composed a body of work for a documentary series by the BBC named The Celts. A selection of Enya's pieces for The Celts were released as her self-titled debut album (1986) with the documentary and BBC Records releases in 1987.

The chairman of Warner Music at the time, Rob Dickins, found enjoyment in listening to Enya's music for The Celts, and he signed her with Warner Music UK. The initial record deal granted her considerable artistic freedom and minimal interference. The success of her sophomore album, Watermark (1988), propelled Enya to worldwide fame, primarily through her international hit single "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)". In the following decade and up to the new millennium, she released the multi-million-selling albums Shepherd Moons (1991), The Memory of Trees (1995), and A Day Without Rain (2000). Sales of A Day Without Rain and its lead single, "Only Time", surged in the United States following its use in media coverage of the September 11 attacks. Her subsequent releases included Amarantine (2005), And Winter Came... (2008) and Dark Sky Island (2015).

Enya's accolades include four Grammy Awards and six World Music Awards, and she holds the record as the most-nominated female Irish artist at the Brit Awards, with four nominations. "May It Be", her composition from the soundtrack of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. "Boadicea", a track from her self-titled album, appeared in the soundtrack of Stephen King's 1992 horror film Sleepwalkers and was sampled in several hit songs, including "Ready or Not" (1996) by Fugees and "I Don't Wanna Know" (2004) by Mario Winans, which featured Enya herself.

Enya - A Box of Dreams, a limited edition 3-disc box set released on 1 December 1997 by WEA Records. The set was a companion release to her first compilation album Paint the Sky with Stars – The Best of Enya, released the previous month. A Box of Dreams contains 46 tracks from her 1987 debut album Enya to Paint the Sky with Stars across three discs, each thematically arranged: "Oceans" contains Enya's upbeat tracks, "Clouds" is a collection of her piano instrumentals, and "Stars" contains slow ballads and more atmospheric tracks. Four B-sides are included: "Oriel Window", "Morning Glory", "Willows on the Water" and "Eclipse". The calligraphy and design were done by Brody Neuenschwander.

Enya - Themes from Calmi Cuori Appassionati, a compilation album by Enya, released exclusively in Japan on October 30, 2001. This album serves as a soundtrack for the Japanese romantic film Calmi Cuori Appassionati. It features a selection of Enya's previously released tracks, recorded between 1986 and 2000, making it a "greatest hits" collection tailored for the film's themes. The album includes 14 tracks, showcasing Enya's signature ethereal and atmospheric style. Some notable songs are "Wild Child," "Caribbean Blue," "Book of Days," "Orinoco Flow," and "Watermark." These tracks highlight her ability to blend Celtic influences with modern production, creating timeless and evocative music.Produced by Nicky Ryan, with lyrics by Roma Ryan, the album was recorded at Aigle Studios in Ireland and other locations. Its release was met with commercial success, debuting at number two on the Japanese Oricon Albums Chart and selling over a million copies in Japan alone

Enya - Only Time, The Collection, released on 5 November 2002 in the United States and on 2 December 2002 in Europe. The set contains 51 tracks across four discs that spans her 1987 debut album Enya through her 2002 single "May It Be". A 48-page booklet with liner notes and lyrics by her longtime lyricist Roma Ryan is included. The video of "Oíche Chiúin (Silent Night)" is also included on the fourth disc, the performance comes from the BBC programme Christmas Day in the Morning aired on 25 December 1996 and was recorded at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. In addition to this computer playable video, there is also a screensaver in the cover art motif and a slideshow of pictures from the booklet. This release was a limited worldwide release of 200,000, with US sales of over 60,000 copies. The selection of songs was made by Enya, Nicky and Roma.
