VA - The Best of New Orleans [2018] (2 x CDs)

NEW ORLEANS

VA - The Best of New Orleans [2018] (2 x CDs)

This one doesn’t strut so much as it glides, a 2CD set that captures the humid, horn-soaked heartbeat of New Orleans without ever breaking a sweat. Released in 2018 by Metro Select and Union Square Music , The Best of New Orleans is less a history lesson and more a mixtape from a friend who knows the backstreets and jukeboxes by heart.

There’s no rigid timeline here, just a rolling wave of rhythm and soul. You get the big names, sure, but the real flavor comes from the tracks that ripple outward, influencing scenes far beyond the Crescent City. James “Sugar Boy” Crawford’s “Jock-A-Mo” is a cornerstone, a raw chant that would echo through decades of Mardi Gras lore. Chris Kenner’s “I Like It Like That” is pure New Orleans propulsion, loose, joyful, and impossible to sit still through.

Then there’s Li’l Millet & His Creoles’ “Rich Woman”, a swampy, swaggering cut that’s been covered and reinterpreted but never outdone. Clarence Garlow’s “Bon Ton Roula” brings the zydeco shuffle into the mix, while The Hawketts’ “Mardi Gras Mambo” and Professor Longhair’s “Go to the Mardi Gras” practically throw beads from the speakers. These aren’t just songs, they’re cultural touchstones, still pulsing through block parties, brass bands, and bounce tracks today.

What makes this set sing is its refusal to overthink. It’s not trying to be definitiv, it’s trying to be alive. The sequencing feels like a neighborhood stroll, a little second-line here, a little backroom R&B there, with a brass band warming up just around the corner. It’s a celebration, plain and simple, one that knows the best way to honor New Orleans is to let the music do the talking. (B)

VA - Doctors, Professors, Kings & Queens, The Big Ol' Box Of New Orleans [2004] (4 x CDs)

If you ever needed proof that New Orleans is less a city and more a living, breathing rhythm section, Doctors, Professors, Kings & Queens makes the case in four discs flat. Released in 2004 by Shout! Factory, this 85-track box set doesn’t just trace the city’s musical history, it throws you right into the second line and dares you not to dance.

This isn’t a dry museum piece. It’s sweaty, brassy, and gloriously alive. You get the big names, Fats Domino, Dr. John, The Meters, Irma Thomas, Professor Longhair, but the real magic is in the deep cuts and overlooked gems. Dave Bartholomew’s “Shrimp and Gumbo” is a spicy little number that rarely shows up on comps, and Eddie Bo’s “Check Your Bucket” is pure syncopated swagger. Balfa Toujours’ “Marshall’s Club” brings the Cajun heat, while The Wild Magnolias’ “New Suit” is a funked-up Mardi Gras Indian chant that still sounds ahead of its time.

The sequencing jumps eras and styles, but it works, zydeco rubs shoulders with bounce, brass band funk crashes into swamp pop, and somehow it all feels like one long, sweaty block party. Rebirth Brass Band’s “Feel Like Funkin’ It Up” and Kermit Ruffins’ “Drop Me Off in New Orleans” are modern classics that hold their own next to vintage sides from Smiley Lewis or Shirley & Lee.

What makes this box essential isn’t just the hits, it’s the way it stitches together the city’s musical DNA. You hear the continuum: from Congo Square to Tipitina’s, from second line to sound system. It’s  a love letter to the groove that built a city. It captures the soul of New Orleans in all its brass-blasted, gumbo-thick glory. (B)

GUMBO STEW

VA - Gumbo Stew [1993] + More Gumbo Stew [1993] + Spicy Gumbo Stew [1994] (3 x CDs)

AFO (an abbreviation of 'All For One') was formed in New Orleans in 1961 by ex-Specialty A&R man Harold Battiste and fellow musicians - or executives - Melvin Lastie, Alvin 'Red' Tyler, Roy Montrell, Peter 'Chuck' Badie, and John Boudreaux. As hit-making session men they had seen a constant stream of white independent record owners pillage the talent that abounded in New Orleans. They hit the charts almost immediately with Barbara George and I Know (You Don't Love Me No More), which reached No 3 in the national pop charts in that very first year. However, chart activity was short-lived. Juggy Murray spirited Barbara away to Sue Records. AFO continued to release class records by young artists like Dr John and Eddie Bo, but in 1963 Harold Battiste moved to the West Coast where he went on to produce Sonny & Cher's, I Got You Babe and Dr John's Gris Gris album.

CD01     There could be no finer introduction to one of New Orleans R&B's finest labels - AFO - than Gumbo Stew. This CD features classic material from Willie Tee, Barbara George, Tami Lyn, Alvin Robinson, Prince La La, Eddie Bo and, of course, Dr John. They hit the charts almost immediately with Barbara George and I Know (You Don't Love Me No More), which reached No 3 in the national pop charts in that very first year. However, chart activity was short-lived. Juggy Murray spirited Barbara away to Sue Records. AFO continued to release class records by young artists like Dr John and Eddie Bo, but in 1963 Harold Battiste moved to the West Coast where he went on to produce Sonny & Cher's I Got You Babe and Dr John's Gris Gris album. Compiled by John Broven (author of the classic book on New Orleans R&B Walking To New Orleans), Gumbo Stew is a long overdue in-depth look at one of New Orleans' finest little labels. (acerecords.co.uk)

CD02      The second batch of material from the vaults of Harold Battiste's AFO label is actually a stronger collection than the first (Gumbo Stew), although over half of it was previously unissued. Most of it's good early '60s New Orleans R&B, with genuine highlights like Prince La La's "Need You" (a futuristic foreshadowing of the sort of voodoo rock that Dr. John would play in the late '60s), a couple rambunctious performances by the young Dr. John himself ("The Fix" sounds like the early Animals as played on a department store-quality organ), and the Dr. John-penned "World of Dreams," sung in heart-tugging fashion by Tami Lynn. Also includes tracks by Barbara George, Alvin Robinson, Eddie Bo, and Johnny Adams (a live 1960 performance), as well as Lee Dorsey's smash "Ya Ya" (not recorded at AFO, but included because AFO chief Harold Battiste says he produced it). If you've already got the best New Orleans R&B anthologies and want more of the same, you should make this one of your next stops. (AMG review by Richie Unterberger)

The font of the Gris Gris from which issued forth this second helping of Gumbo Stew from New Orleans master musical chef Monsieur Harold Battiste. Under the radar Rhythm and Blues from New Orleans, very lively and fun with excellent musicianship. I doubt these second-string singles ever saw the inside of many jukeboxes even 50 miles out from the pressing plant. They came, they wailed, they were mostly forgotten.

CD03     As the good doctor - Dr John - says in his autobiography: "I feel really blessed to have been around AFO, because they were putting down so much of the new and fascinating music that was coming out of New Orleans at the time. I was on the inside with this new funk style from the beginning. "'Still Spicy Gumbo Stew' is Volume 3 in the Ace story of AFO Records, the crucial New Orleans' record label. As the titles have it, the first course was 'Gumbo Stew' (CDCHD 450), the second 'More Gumbo Stew' (CDCHD 462) and this time around the dish is Still Spicy! There's Dr John with The Point, Eddie Bo with his Check Mr Popeye, the mighty fine Alvin Robinson (he of Down Home Girl - covered by The Rolling Stones), Willie Tee, Tami Lynn and the late piano great James Booker with his ballad End Of A Dream. The stew this time is a littler jazzier but from the same great pot that was AFO - one of the finest of the early '60s New Orleans' R&B organizations. (acerecords.co.uk)
