MILES DAVIS

Miles Davis - The Original Mono Recordings [2013] (9 x CDs)

For nearly half a century, Miles Davis (1926-1991) was arguably the preeminent innovator in jazz - rarely staying in the same place twice, experimenting with the most cutting-edge styles and ideas he could imagine. Some of Miles' most enduring works for Columbia Records are collected here, the way they were originally heard.

When the music in this boxed set was recorded between 1955 and 1963, Columbia engineers typically ran two tape machines. The approved performances were spliced from tapes recorded on the A-machine while the tapes from the B-machine were left un-spliced — serving as a backup in case anything happen to the A-tapes. To duplicate the sound of the original mono albums on the nine CDs in this set, all of the A- and B-reels were pulled from Sony's Vaults. Then the best-sounding reels were selected, and a series of digital remastering techniques were applied — using pristine copies of the original LPs as audio benchmarks."

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of jazz with the “Miles Davis - The Original Mono Recordings” box set. This nine-album collection will transport you back to the golden era of jazz, from 1956 to 1961, when Miles Davis, the maestro himself, was at the peak of his creative prowess. Experience music as it was meant to be heard, in mono sound. This unique format blends all the music together, creating an intimate and immersive auditory journey. It’s like being in the room with the musicians, feeling every note as they play it.

The albums in this set are milestones in the history of jazz. From Davis’ Columbia debut, 'Round About Midnight, you’ll witness the magic of his quintet, featuring the likes of John Coltrane and Red Garland. Their rendition of Thelonious Monk’s “’Round Midnight” is a masterpiece that still resonates today. The box set also includes three extraordinary collaborations between Davis and arranger Gil Evans. These large band recordings, such as Porgy and Bess, Miles Ahead, and Sketches of Spain, are a testament to the power of mono mixes. The horns and woodwinds merge into a single, harmonious sound, creating a symphony of jazz.

This collection traces Davis’ evolution from hard bop to modal jazz. It highlights his fusion of pure jazz and orchestral sophistication with Gil Evans. It also features the legendary John Coltrane, who appears on six of the nine albums.

Two of Davis’ rarest albums are also included: Jazz Track, a soundtrack to a French film, and Miles and Monk at Newport, a live album featuring two giants of jazz. 1958's Jazz Track features 10 compositions recorded for a French film, L'Ascenseuer Pour l'Echafaud, and three selections from an acclaimed session recorded shortly after the release of Milestones. (These sessions served as a prelude to Kind Of Blue, starring Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. These are the only other studio sides by Davis sextet before recording what would become the best-selling jazz album of all time.)  Miles & Monk At Newport, released in 1964, features selections from two separate live performances at the Newport Jazz Festival: Davis' leading the same sextet from Jazz Track in 1958, and a 1963 set from pianist Thelonious Monk, just recently signed to Columbia Records from the Riverside label.

In essence, “Miles Davis - The Original Mono Recordings 2013” is not merely a box set. It’s a journey through a transformative period in Davis’ career, a chance to experience his music as it was originally intended. This collection is a tribute to Davis’ genius and his enduring influence on jazz. So, sit back, relax, and let the music take you on a journey you will want to take time and time again. (B)

  6. I'm very keen to listen to the original MONO production and "reading" of these seminal works. 1957 to 63: what a time in Jazz (I was just a naive, uninformed kid being fed with military marches and horrible Schlager). Very grateful again, BB! Best, TC

    1. Hi TC,
For a long time, jazz music remained an enigma to me. There was a period when I consciously avoided it, a decision I now consider misguided. Jazz, after all, presents a rich tapestry of sounds and emotions that are truly unparalleled in the musical world. Enjoy.
      Cheers.
