The “VA - Jazz Vibes: Milestones of Legends” box set is the first comprehensive collection featuring the most influential jazz vibraphonists. It includes 18 original albums that trace the history of jazz vibes from Swing to Hard Bop.

The vibraphone, an instrument that was invented in the USA in 1921 and reached its modern form by 1927, quickly became a prominent solo instrument in jazz. This rapid rise to prominence can be attributed to Lionel Hampton (1908-2002), who was asked by no less than Louis Armstrong for a recording-date in 1930 to use the vibraphone on some titles.  Already proficient in drums and xylophone, Lionel Hampton naturally gravitated towards a percussive style. As part of the Benny Goodman Quartet, one of the first multi-ethnic jazz ensembles, he popularized the instrument from 1936 onwards. By the 1940s, he had become an international star leading his own orchestras.

His improvisational prowess was demonstrated at a “summit” with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Buddy Rich in 1953, which is featured on the first CD of this collection. Another musician, Red Norvo was, like Hampton, born in 1908, preferred a pianistic approach. His trio with guitarist Tal Farlow and the young Charles Mingus on bass are among the highlights of "chamber musical" jazz. . Milt Jackson (1923-1999) was the first bebop star of the vibraphone, who was a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet, alternated between hot and cool throughout his career. With his own bands and recording projects, he could return to his musical roots.

Lem Winchester and Eddie Costa are also celebrated here, both great musicians, but both unfortunately died very young. One of them, also an excellent piano player, can be heard here with pianist Bill Evans who also lets the sparks fly in dialogue with Dave Pike. Pike went on to great success with his European jazz rock quartet in the 70s. Another musician achieved great success with his European jazz rock quartet in the 70s.

A rare recording from Canada features Buddy Montgomery with the Mastersounds, a more soulful version of the MJQ, which also included his brothers. A saxophonist from California, whose records under his own name are appreciated by collectors only, but who has been heard worldwide as a soloist on records by Carole King, had the honor of making the first recordings with two other vibraphonists. Cal Tjader, other vibraphonists who made this mark on the West Coast as the king of Latin jazz. Also featured is British vibraphonist and pianist Victor Feldman. A fellow countryman, Tubby Hayes, primarily known as a saxophonist and flutist, could have just as well based his tragically short career (1935-1973) on playing the vibraphone, as some live recordings show.
