John Lee Hooker - 16 Original Albums & Bonus Tracks [2015] (10 x CDs)

JOHN LEE HOOKER

John Lee Hooker - 16 Original Albums & Bonus Tracks [2015] (10 x CDs)

John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1912 or 1917 - June 21, 2001 was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. The son of a sharecropper, he rose to prominence performing an electric guitar-style adaptation of Delta blues that he developed in Detroit. Hooker often incorporated other elements, including talking blues and early North Mississippi hill country blues. He developed his own driving-rhythm boogie style, distinct from the 1930s-1940s piano-derived boogie-woogie. Hooker was ranked 35 in Rolling Stone's 2015 list of 100 greatest guitarists and has been cited as one of the greatest male blues vocalists of all time. (Wikipedia)

There is a particular way to approach a set like 16 Original Albums & Bonus Tracks, and it usually begins with accepting what it is rather than what the title suggests. Issued in Germany in 2015 by Documents in association with Intense Media, the box gathers ten discs of early John Lee Hooker recordings, built from material originally released across the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The physical presentation suggests abundance more than narrative. Ten discs, sixteen album titles, and a final disc of bonus tracks, all laid out in a way that invites long stretches of listening rather than careful study. The sequence does not behave like a run of original LPs. Instead, it moves in blocks, albums grouped together, styles overlapping, familiar songs appearing in slightly different forms as the discs turn.

Early on, the core of Hooker’s sound settles in. Solo performances, electric and acoustic, built around repetition and rhythm rather than strict structure. Tracks from Burning Hell and I’m John Lee Hooker introduce that steady pulse, voice and guitar moving together in a way that feels self-contained. From there, the set widens. Studio recordings with fuller backing sit alongside more stripped performances, yet the underlying approach remains unchanged.

Because the material comes from multiple original sources, the pacing develops through accumulation. One song leads into another with a similar tempo, then shifts slightly, then returns again. The effect is less about contrast and more about immersion. Variations in recording quality, arrangement, and session context become part of the listening rather than interruptions.

By the later discs, the repetition has its own logic. Certain phrases, rhythms, and melodic patterns reappear often enough to feel like a language rather than a set of songs. The final disc of bonus material extends that feeling, adding more sides without changing direction.

This set does not organise the material into a strict narrative, it simply lays it out in volume, allowing the sound to build through time and familiarity. It plays like a long, continuous field of early Hooker recordings. (B)

Mrs. Miller - The Turned-On World Of Mrs. Miller [2000]

CURIOSITIES

Mrs. Miller - The Turned-On World Of Mrs. Miller [2000]

It helps to come to The Turned-On World Of Mrs. Miller without trying to decide too quickly what it is supposed to be. The recordings by Mrs. Miller have a reputation that tends to arrive ahead of the music yet hearing them gathered like this shifts the focus. Across the full sequence, something more consistent begins to take shape.

The set draws from the mid-1960s recordings she made for Capitol, presented here in a way that lets the material run without interruption. Familiar songs appear, often drawn from contemporary pop of the time, but the performances do not follow the expected phrasing or timing. Instead, they move with a kind of independence from the arrangements, the voice and the backing sometimes meeting, sometimes passing by each other.

What becomes noticeable after a few tracks is that the effect changes depending on how long you stay with it. Heard in isolation, a single performance might feel unusual or even disorienting. Heard in sequence, the patterns settle. The orchestral backings remain steady, carefully arranged, while the vocal delivery introduces a different sense of timing that does not quite align with the structure underneath.

Faster numbers, slower ballads, and well-known melodies all pass through the same approach. Over time, the repetition creates its own logic. The listener begins to hear the recordings less as novelty and more as a distinct style, even if it sits outside conventional expectations.

By the final stretch, the set feels less like a collection of curiosities and more like a consistent body of work presented without commentary. The arrangements remain polished, the voice remains unchanged, and the space between them becomes part of the listening experience.

This compilation leaves room for different reactions. It does not resolve its own contradictions, it simply presents them, track after track, and allows the listener to decide how to meet them. (B)

Lester Young with Count Basie - Classic Columbia, Okeh and Vocalion (1936-1940) [2008] (4 x CDs)

SUNDAY JAZZ

LESTER YOUNG with COUNT BASSIE

Lester Young with Count Basie - Classic Columbia, Okeh and Vocalion (1936-1940) [2008] (4 x CDs)

Before looking at titles or dates, the sound of Classic Columbia Okeh and Vocalion 1936–1940 settles in almost immediately. There is a lightness to it, a sense of space that feels different from many recordings of the same period. Even within full band arrangements, nothing feels crowded. The music moves with an ease that reveals itself over time rather than all at once.

These sides place Lester Young within the orbit of Count Basie and his orchestra during the late 1930s. The Basie band provides a steady foundation, rhythm section locked into a relaxed but precise swing, while Young’s tenor lines drift just above it. His phrasing rarely pushes, instead it seems to arrive slightly behind the beat, giving the music its distinct shape.

The sequencing brings together sessions originally issued across Columbia, Okeh, and Vocalion, and hearing them in this collected form highlights how consistent that approach remained. Tracks led by the full orchestra sit alongside smaller group recordings without disrupting the flow. The transitions feel natural, as if the same conversation continues in different rooms.

What becomes noticeable after a while is the balance between structure and freedom. The arrangements are clear, often built around strong riffs, yet within that framework the soloists move with remarkable flexibility. Young’s tone stays cool and unforced, while Basie’s piano appears in brief, economical statements that anchor the performance without drawing attention away from the ensemble.

There is no dramatic shift as the set progresses. Instead, the recordings deepen the same mood, refining the interplay between soloist and band. The rhythm section keeps everything grounded, allowing the melodic lines to stretch and settle without hurry.

Heard in sequence, the set feels like a continuous stretch of late 1930s studio time, where the goal was not to capture a moment of intensity but to maintain a feeling. It leaves behind a clear impression of musicians who understood how to let the music breathe. (B)
