When I sit with Classic Black & White Jazz Sessions, I feel as though I am stepping into a long corridor of American jazz where every door opens onto a different room, each one carrying its own temperature and its own history. The 2022 box set gathers the complete output of the Black & White label, a company active through the forties that recorded in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. What makes the collection so compelling is the way it captures a moment when jazz was shifting from one era to the next, yet still holding tight to the voices that shaped its foundation.
The early discs move through piano‑led groups, where stride and small‑group swing still guide the rhythm. Art Hodes, Cliff Jackson, and Hank Duncan bring a warmth that feels close to the clubs they played, with arrangements that leave space for the musicians to breathe. As the set moves forward, the palette widens. Blues shouters, revivalist horn sections, and tight rhythm units appear, each one adding a new shade to the label’s catalogue.
