TIME LIFE ROLLING STONE COLLECTION
VA - Rolling Stone Collection - 1967-1992 [1993] (7 x CD's)
A Time Life Box set, this chronological 7-CD sampler of music from the late 60s to the early 90s is well-selected for the most part, as one would expect from Rolling Stone magazine, a principal arbiter of taste for many rock fans. Due to licensing restrictions, devotees of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones will find nothing in this collection except a couple of solo tracks from John Lennon and Paul McCartney. However, most artists of note in that 25-year period are represented by at least one fondly remembered song or major hit. A few get multiple cuts, including four by Bob Dylan and two or three each by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, The Allman Brothers, The Eagles, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and U2, as well as Eric Clapton and Neil Young in their various incarnations.
As usual, female and black performers are under-represented (where are Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, James Brown, Al Green, Smokey Robinson...?), but Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Madonna, Tracy Chapman, Cyndi Lauper, Patti Smith, and The Pretenders make the list, along with Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy, Run D.M.C., Robert Cray, Sly and The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, and The Jackson 5. Undeniably great rock stars and bands are here, of course, such as David Bowie, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, Warren Zevon, Graham Parker, Traffic, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band, The Byrds, The Cars, The Clash, The Doors, The Kinks, The B-52s, Ramones, R.E.M., and Talking Heads. Many listeners will find fault with egregious omissions (where are Queen, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Journey, The Beastie Boys, Heart, Linda Ronstadt...?) or with the songs chosen for some artists. But I appreciate this box set for what it does contain - a big dose of concentrated nostalgia and musical genius! (Amazon)

Thank you BB! Another great set of comps. I had no idea Time Life had done so many things like this.
ReplyDeleteHi hotrodmike,
DeleteTime Life produced many compilations over the years which I plan to share from time to time.
This is a good one but not surprising as all the songs are known well. Still a wonderful listen.
Cheers
Hi Butterboy,
ReplyDeleteanother impressive Time Life Box set!
thanks thanks thanks! for sharing all these treasures!
Cheers!
Hi Il Commendatore,
DeleteI agree this is a good box set of well know songs. I like the set because you can put it on and know every track.. It a fun listen.
Cheers.
Another box set I didn't know about! Time-Life was never known for putting together compilations of obscure music. Time-Life is known for putting together well-represented (balanced) and near fully loaded CD sets of established (known) bands and original music that is quality engineered with great audio. Supporting documentations could be improved on, but that really could be said about almost any collection of this magnitude. I've long thought there should be more CD's (because there's practically none) made with data tracks containing digital documentation of anything in the CD booklet and hopefully a lot more because then you could see it properly on your computer to help make up for the move from albums to CD and for having to downsize any cover art, pics, and documentation that we previously were used to seeing in album-size format (some with fold-out posters if you recall). That being said.. any Time Life collection is well worth having and is ALWAYS appreciated and enjoyed here. So big thanks from me, BB!!
ReplyDeleteHi Mr Radio,
DeleteTime Life albums/Cd's are great for many reason, but mostly for the fact that they (apparently) use original master tapes to compile their compilations. The quality is always good (so far). Glad to hear you didn't know of this one and found something new. Even though you may know every track on this compilation it is still great to listen too. Good choices.
Cheers.
