It is an anthology that highlights a crucial period in the annals of jazz. Stan Getz, often referred to as “The Sound,” was celebrated for his melodious tone and his capacity to adapt his style over time. His quintet, which was established after a tour of Sweden in 1951, included the exceptional guitarist, Jimmy Raney. Their dynamic interaction on fast-paced tunes and their tonal harmony on ballads were truly remarkable.

Jimmy Raney, a renowned American jazz guitarist, was recognized for his contributions to the Red Norvo trio and his simultaneous collaboration with Stan Getz. Raney’s influence on Getz’s music was significant. He introduced a fresh aesthetic and vibrancy to the guitar, and his complex and sophisticated harmonic innovations were clearly reflected in their joint works. His composition “Signal” is a perfect illustration of his harmonic complexity.

The box set encompasses a range of jazz styles, including cool jazz, bebop, post-bop, hard bop, and mainstream jazz. It offers a thorough review of the duo’s work from 1951 to 1953. The tracks demonstrate the quintet’s adaptability, from the energetic “Thou Swell” to the contemplative “Everything Happens to Me”.

The “Complete Recordings of the Stan Getz Quintet with Jimmy Raney” [1990] is a musical chronicle that captures the collaborative magic between two jazz legends. The impact of Jimmy Raney on Stan Getz’s music is palpable throughout the box set, making it an essential collection for any jazz aficionado. 1. Hi Bob Mac,

  2. Oh yes, BB, the (all too often unsung) guitar genius of Jimmy Raney, the prototypical "guitarists' guitar player"! He had an equally talented son, Doug, whose life unfortunately was one big mess ... but also Doug left us with excellent jazz guitar before his untimely (drugs & alcohol) death at only 60. Thank you for carrying on with that magic Sunday Jazz. Best, TC
