In 2018, Trojan Records marked its 50th anniversary with the launch of the This Is Trojan series, a collection of 2CD sets, each dedicated to a specific genre of popular Jamaican music. This series not only celebrates the rich history of Trojan Records but also offers a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of Jamaican music. Each of the six collections in the series showcasing a specific form of popular Jamaican music.

These were issued in the following order

This Is Ska    The journey begins with This Is Ska, which delves into the early to mid-1960s, a period when ska was the dominant sound in Jamaica. This collection features 50 of the finest original ska tracks, featuring work by such major performers as Desmond Dekker, the Maytals, Lee Scratch Perry and the Skatalites including iconic songs like “007,” “I’m In The Mood For Ska,” “Taller Than You Are,” “Bonanza Ska,” and “Carry Go Bring Come.” These tracks capture the vibrant energy and infectious rhythms that defined the ska era.

This Is Reggae    This Is Reggae spans the past 50 years, gathering 39 UK Top 50 hits, including four Number One hits (“Double Barrel”, “Uptown Top Ranking”, “Everything I Own” and “I Wanna Wake Up With You”). This handsomely designed collection offers a broad overview of reggae’s enduring popularity and its evolution over the decades.

This Is Rock Steady    Prior to the advent of reggae towards the latter half of 1968, rock steady dominated Jamaica’s musical landscape, having superseded ska just two years earlier. This Is Rock Steady features 50 of the most popular rock steady recordings, including chart hits like “007,” “Return Of Django,” and “Train To Skaville.” This collection also includes original versions of famously covered tracks like “54-46 That’s My Number”, “Rudy A Message To You, “Stop That Train”, “The Tide Is High” and “Let’s Do Rocksteady’.”

This Is Trojan Boss Reggae    As the 1960s drew to a close, a new sound emerged: reggae. This Is Boss Reggae showcases the early, energetic form of reggae known as ‘boss’ or ‘skinhead’ reggae, reflecting its association with the UK’s youth sub-culture that championed the style. This collection includes six mainstream chart hits such as “Israelites,” “Liquidator,” and “Red Red Wine,” highlighting the rapid tempo and lively spirit that characterized this period.

This Is Roots    This Is Roots focuses on the mid to late 1970s, a period when roots reggae dominated the Jamaican music scene, making major stars of such talents as Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown and Johnny Clarke. This collection showcases 40 significant hits that highlight Afro-Caribbean themes and the Rastafarian faith. 

This Is Dub    Over the past few decades, Jamaican dub has proved to be one of the most influential of Jamaican music forms, inspiring a range of modern genres, from jungle to dubstep. Dub has influenced numerous modern music styles, is celebrated in This Is Dub. This collection features tracks mixed by legendary creators like King Tubby, Lee Perry, King Jammy, Errol Thompson, Sylvan Morris and Scientist.

Each collection in the This Is Trojan series is stylishly designed and includes a fully illustrated and annotated booklet, making them a must-have for any fan of Jamaican music.
