VA - Please Say Something Nice, Bouncy Beat & Polite Pop from the UK 1963-1968

This is a charmingly curated CD compilation from Teensville Records. It gathers 34 tracks of British pop that sparkle with youthful optimism, studio sheen, and a distinctly pre-psychedelic sense of decorum. This is the sound of swinging Britain before the fuzz pedals and freak-outs took hold, a world of crisp suits, catchy choruses, and earnest declarations of love.

The compilation draws from a wide range of obscure singles and regional releases, many of which are making their CD debut. Artists like The Shevells (“I Could Conquer the World”), The Origenells (“My Girl”), and Toby Twirl (“Back in Time”) offer tight, melodic arrangements that echo the early Beatles and Searchers, but with a softer, more polished edge. There’s a sweetness to these tracks, whether it’s The Twins’ wistful “When Will It Be” or The Barrier’s harmony-laced “A Place in Your Heart”, that feels both innocent and expertly crafted.

What elevates the set is its attention to detail.  It’s not just a listening experience, it’s a guided tour through a forgotten chapter of British pop history.

The tone throughout is upbeat but never brash. Even the more driving numbers, like Russ Loader’s “Trying Too Hard” or The Dorchesters’ “How About It,” maintain a sense of polite urgency, perfect for fans of mod pop, Merseybeat, and early British Invasion sounds.

For collectors and enthusiasts of UK pop’s gentler side, Please Say Something Nice is a wonderful listen. It reminds us that beneath the cultural revolutions of the ’60s, there was still room for melody, manners, and a well-placed tambourine. (B)
