238-track box set gathering hits and rarities from 1966: the year that soul music broke big.

1966 was a landmark year for soul music, characterized by massive hits from Motown (The Supremes, Temptations), Stax (Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett), and Atlantic Records artists like Aretha Franklin and Sam & Dave , featuring iconic tracks like "When a Man Loves a Woman" (Percy Sledge), "634-5789" (Wilson Pickett), "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" (The Temptations), and "Reach Out I'll Be There" (Four Tops), solidifying soul's mainstream success and cultural impact.

Key Soul Hits & Artists of 1966

Motown Dominance: The Supremes had major hits with "You Can't Hurry Love" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On," while The Temptations dominated with "Get Ready," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and "(I Know) I'm Losing You".

Stax & Southern Soul: Wilson Pickett's "634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.)" was a huge success, and Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" became a timeless anthem.

Atlantic Records & Muscle Shoals: Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood" and "Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'" were major hits from this era.

Other Staples: Stevie Wonder's "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" and James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)" (carried over from late '65) were also huge.

Cultural Significance

New York, Chicago et al influencing if not in some cases (see Motown) dominating American pop. This compilation tells part of that exciting story with 238 tracks spread over eight CDs collated from the Warner vaults which take in Stax, Atlantic, Atco, Loma and more. Like all great selections there's a judicious mix of hits and obscurities; songs that spent weeks in the US Top 10; songs that did nothing at the time but are part of rare soul's fabric lighting up dance floors today; songs that have been forgotten but are ripe for rediscovery; songs that fetch three figure sums and songs that you can pick up in the bargain bins. There are artists that have umpteen articles and biographies penned on them and others that are little more than a footnote. Everyone though is a winner in my eyes.

The majority of the tracks stem from Stax, Atlantic and Loma, the first two major players, the other lesser known but now cherished.

Stax went for gold in 1966 with Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Booker T. And The M.G.'s, William Bell, Eddie Floyd et al all making their mark. Otis Redding had already made inroads the previous year with Otis Blue hitting the US R&B Number 1 spot. But 1966 would see him cross over to a white counter culture audience performing at the Sonny and Cher Appreciation Concert at the Hollywood Bowl in front of 18,000 fans on a bill including Donovan, The Mamas And The Papas and The Turtles, headlining LA's Whisky A Go Go and playing San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium with the Grateful Dead and Country Joe & The Fish. He would also contribute the definitive take on 'Try A Little Tenderness.'

Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas and Eddie Floyd, meanwhile, also contributed to soul s greatest hits at Stax with 'Hold On, I'm Comin",', 'B-A-B-Y' and 'Knock On Wood' respectively, the latter penned by Floyd with Steve Cropper, guitarist of course with Booker T. And The M.G's, Stax's engine room. Floyd and Cropper were also writing songs for Wilson Pickett, who having scored a US R&B Number 1 with In The Midnight Hour' in 1965 for Atlantic, added another two for the same label in 1966 with '634-5789 (Soulsville USA)' and 'Land Of 1000 Dances'

At Atlantic new stars were also being created, Percy Sledge hitting the US Number 1 pop and R&B slot with his 1966 debut single 'When A Man Loves A Woman'.

Then elder statesmen such as The Drifters and their erstwhile lead singer Ben E. King, still going strong, were still making waves; the latter with 'What Is Soul?' of which he was the very embodiment, the former with 'Baby What I Mean', one of this writer's favourite 45s. Warner Bros., meanwhile, had Lorraine Ellison who fanfared her arrival with the peerless 'Stay With Me', one of the great heartbreak songs (again the flip has been chosen over the top side here). Ellison was also one of the writers for Loma, the Warner Bros.' imprint that ran from 1964 to 1968 and during that time put out mainly but not exclusively soul 45s. With a big label budget, they were the complete package utilising producers such as George Kerr, Marc Gordon and Gene Page and along with Ellison songwriters including Willie Hutch, to create a new Motown with a dramatic, highly energised house style with Strong melodies over danceable rhythms - Hutch would of course go on to record albums for Motown including The Mack and Foxy Brown. But acts such as Larry Laster and The Marvellos while missing out on chart action were resurrected on the UK northern soul scene along with tracks here by Darrell Banks, The Blossoms and Bobby McNutt to name a few.

Soul Music in 1966.

Key Artists:

1966 was a pivotal year for soul music, with artists like Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Sam and Dave, Carla Thomas, Ben E. King, Arthur Conley, Darrell Banks, Esther Phillips, William Bell, Tammi Terrell, Doris Troy and Mary Wells releasing hits that solidified the genre's sound.

Notable Songs:

Songs like "Reach Out I'll Be There" by The Four Tops, "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by the Supremes exemplify the soul music of the era.

Los Angeles in 1966 became one of the most vibrant cauldrons of rock music talent in the world. It was the nexus where Canadian rocker Neil Young and bassist Bruce Palmer connected with guitarist Stephen Stills, singer-songwriter Richie Furay and drummer Dewey Martin to create Buffalo Springfield, one of rock’s most highly regarded new arrivals of the 1960s.

Additionally, Otis Redding’s four-night stand at the Whisky in 1966 helped widen the scope of music out of the Sunset Strip scene, which was dominated by white rock bands. Redding’s incendiary performances drew stars such as Dylan, Van Morrison, Stills and members of the Doors, among many others.

Soul music itself took a major leap forward in 1966 when Aretha Franklin left Columbia Records and signed with Atlantic Records, where she crucially teamed with producer Jerry Wexler and found the supportive environment and artistic encouragement that soon led to her crowning as the Queen of Soul.

1966 has been heralded as a boom year for rock music, but it was also a peak for soul, the sounds coming out of Memphis, Detroit, New York, Chicago et al exploding into the US charts and influencing pop music in America and beyond. This box tells part of that story with tracks taken from legendary Memphis southern soul label Stax, Detroit's Motown Records, New York’s Atlantic Records, Warner Brothers’ imprint Loma that became a favourite of the UK northern soul scene and more.

Hits include Wilson Pickett’s ‘Land of 1,000 Dances’ (US R&B #1, US #6), Sam and Dave’s ‘Hold On, I’m Comin’ (US R&B #1, US #21), Eddie Floyd’s ‘Knock on Wood’ (US R&B #1, US #28), Carla Thomas’ ‘B-A-B-Y’ (US R&B #3, US #14), Otis Redding’s ‘Try a Little Tenderness’ (R&B #4, US #25) and Darrell Banks’ ‘Open the Door to Your Heart’ (US R&B #2, US #27).

There’s northern soul floorfillers such as Darrell Banks’ ‘Open the Door to Your Heart’, The Marvellos’ ‘Something’s Burnin’’, The Blossoms’ ‘That’s When the Tears Start’, Bobby Womack’s ‘Find Me Somebody’, Mary Wells’ Keep Me in Suspense’, Charles Thomas’ ‘The Man with the Golden Touch’, and Bobby McNutt’s ‘I’m Gettin’ Ready’.

This isn’t just about hits, there’s B-sides, obscurities and a couple of Loma tracks that were unissued until the 21st century. The focus may be mainly on the dancefloor such as The Marvellos’ stomping ‘I Need You’ (featured here) digitised from the Loma tape archive. but there’s also room for a few deep soul numbers such as Jeff Dale’s sublime ‘A Suffering Pain’.

In 1966, Billboard published a chart ranking the top-performing singles in the United States in rhythm and blues (R&B) and related African American-oriented music genres; the chart has undergone various name changes over the decades to reflect the evolution of such genres and since 2005 has been published as Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. During the year, 20 different singles topped the chart, which was published under the title Top Selling Rhythm & Blues Singles through the issue dated April 2 and Top Selling R&B Singles thereafter.

In the issue of Billboard dated January 1, James Brown was at number one with "I Got You (I Feel Good)", the song's fifth week in the top spot. It was displaced the following week by "A Sweet Woman Like You" by Joe Tex, but returned to the top of the chart for one final week in the issue dated January 15. Many of the year's chart-toppers were released on the Motown label, including singles by Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Supremes and the Four Tops. Motown is regarded as one of the most successful and influential labels of the 20th century and as having brought unprecedented levels of mainstream success to black music.

The Temptations were the year's most successful act, achieving four chart-toppers with "Get Ready", "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" and "(I Know) I'm Losing You", which spent a cumulative total of sixteen weeks in the top spot, the highest figure for any act.

“Ain't Too Proud to Beg" spent eight non-consecutive weeks at number one, the longest time spent in the top spot by a song. The longest unbroken run at number one was seven weeks, achieved by Wilson Pickett's "634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.)".

In addition to the Temptations, four other acts achieved more than one number one during 1966. Brown gained his second chart-topper of the year in June with "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". Pickett topped the chart for seven weeks in March and April with "634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.)" and for a single week in September with "Land of a Thousand Dances", the Supremes spent time at number one in the last quarter of the year with both "You Can't Hurry Love" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On", and Stevie Wonder reached the peak position with "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" for five weeks. Artists who topped the chart for the first time in 1966 included Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Percy Sledge, who spent four weeks at number one with "When a Man Loves a Woman"; it also topped the all-genre Hot 100 chart and would prove to be his signature song, but was his only chart-topper.

So, after months of exhaustive and extensive online research, plus my own recollections and memories, here is my personal compilation of what I consider to be the 238 best and most important soul tracks from 1966.

This fully packed 8CD set contains many rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with a number featured in their original mono 7" single form. Only the original 1966 studio mixes are included. No later remixes, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here!

*** PLEASE NOTE: A few tracks featured in this compilation were actually released at the very end of 1965 but didn't hit their peak chart position (mostly on Billboard) until January or February 1966 and that's why I've included them.

Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable amount of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

Enjoy!
