Simple Minds began in Glasgow in the late seventies, formed by Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill after years of playing together in earlier school bands. Their early work grew out of the city’s post‑punk scene, shaped by small clubs, cheap rehearsal rooms, and a desire to push beyond the usual guitar lines of the period. What followed was a long and restless career that moved through art‑rock, synth‑driven pop, widescreen anthems, and later a return to more reflective songwriting. Across decades, the constant thread has been their instinct for atmosphere and scale, and the way Kerr’s voice and Burchill’s guitar could shift from intimate to expansive without losing their centre.
This box set gathers that full journey. Beginning with Life in a Day and Real to Real Cacophony, you hear a band testing ideas, leaning into sharp rhythms and cold electronics. Empires and Dance and the twin releases Sons and Fascination and Sister Feelings Call show them finding a distinctive pulse, where repetition and texture carry as much weight as melody. By the time New Gold Dream arrives, the group has stepped into a brighter world, building songs that feel both precise and dreamlike.
The middle period brings the widescreen ambition of Once Upon a Time, the political reach of Street Fighting Years, and the polished confidence of Good News from the Next World. Later albums such as Neapolis, Cry, and Graffiti Soul reveal a band comfortable with reinvention, drawing on electronic elements, acoustic settings, and more reflective writing. The recent records, from Big Music through Walk Between Worlds and Direction of the Heart, show a group still committed to craft, still chasing new shapes within their sound.
The set becomes a long portrait of persistence and curiosity. It traces a band that kept moving, kept adjusting its colours, and kept finding new ways to sound like itself. (B)
