Linda Ronstadt - Box Set [1999] (4 x CD's)

LINDA RONSTADT

Linda Ronstadt - Box Set [1999] (4 x CD's)

Initially labeled a country-rock heartbreaker, Linda Ronstadt moved on to establish beachheads in everything from new wave to light opera, from pre-rock pop to traditional Mexican music. Such restlessness has been interpreted as flightiness among doubters, but Ronstadt's headstrong eclecticism has, with time, taken on weight, which is reflected in this suitably hefty four-disc career overview. Here is Ronstadt the musician, an erstwhile Cal-rock pinup girl who refused to sit still for the next photo shoot while churning out more rock-radio fare. Keep in mind that Ronstadt was the first female performer to chalk up seven consecutive platinum albums; she must have faced down considerable pressure to play it safe in the '80s. Indeed, some of the least interesting material found here is the post-Heart Like a Wheel rote rock culled from 1978's Living in the USA and 1980's Mad Love. Blessed with a starburst of a voice and the determination to put her gift to the test, she shines brightest when she's outside her familiar orbit. Disc four is the real windfall here, offers rarities, including her three excellent contributions to Randy Newman's Faust and a contribution to Carla Bley's ambitious jazz opera Escalator Over the Hill. (Amazon)

Linda Ronstadt's generically titled four-CD, five-hour, 86-track box set retrospective attempts with considerable success to encompass the many types of music she's sung from the mid-'60s to the late '90s. The album is divided into five unequal parts, with 31 tracks given over to an "Album Retrospective," followed by seven tracks from "The Nelson Riddle Sessions," her three albums of classic pop, then five songs "En Español," drawn from her three Spanish language albums. That takes up the first two discs, with the third disc consisting of 20 "Collaborations" and the fourth 23 "Rarities." It is significant that the first section is called "Album Retrospective," signaling to the listener that Ronstadt is not interested in presenting her hit singles as such. .... But it certainly makes the case for Ronstadt as a hard-working performer who constantly challenged herself by trying styles beyond the Southern California folk-rock for which she remains best known. (AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann)

This is the set to buy if you like Linda Ronstadt. You will end up loving her all the more for great song choices, outstanding vocal pipes, tremendous range of styles and spot on emotional singing. This is as good as it gets for a retrospective box set.

VA - 100% Blaxploitation [2009] (5 x CD's)

BLAXPLOITATION

VA - 100% Blaxploitation [2009] (5 x CDs)

Blaxploitation or blacksploitation is an ethnic subgenre of the exploitation film that emerged in the United States during the early 1970s. The films, while popular, suffered backlash for disproportionate numbers of stereotypical film characters showing bad or questionable motives including criminals, etc. However, the genre does rank among the first in which black characters and communities are the heroes and subjects of film and television, rather than sidekicks or villains or victims of brutality. The genre's inception coincides with the rethinking of race relations in the 1970s. Blaxploitation films were originally aimed at an urban African-American audience, but the genre's audience appeal soon broadened across racial and ethnic lines. Hollywood realized the potential profit of expanding the audiences of blaxploitation films across those racial lines. The Los Angeles National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) head and ex-film publicist Junius Griffin coined the portmanteau from the words "black" and "exploitation." Variety credited Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and the less radical, Hollywood-financed film Shaft (both released in 1971) with the invention of the blaxploitation genre. Blaxploitation films were also the first to feature soundtracks of funk and soul music. (Wikipedia)

100% Blaxploitation brings together 100 original Funk and Soul tracks from the 1970s Blaxploitation era. Including cuts from Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack, The Meters, Aaron Neville and Funkadelic, 100% Blaxploitation is an essential collection, with every funky Soul classic you'll ever need.

HARD TO FIND ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTALS

VA - Hard To Find Orchestral Instrumentals I [1999] & II [2003] (2 x CD's) + Artwork

Have you ever heard an orchestral piece on the radio and wondered, "What was that? Who did it? Where can I get it?". This CD has many of those great pieces. Over the years, I have come to appreciate this music. This has led me to start collecting "lounge" music, Broadway cast albums, The pieces on this CD are very difficult to find. Every one is an enjoyable timepiece.

Eric’s collections of pop and orchestral instrumentals are where you really find the rarest material. The vocal collections contain rare songs, of course, but these songs can often be found on other collections and greatest hits anthologies. Instrumentals in general are harder to find and here they are remastered to Eric’s high standards which make every release something special.  As usual along with their excellent engineering they also provide detailed booklet notes.

Everything here has been nearly impossible to find on CD and if this is your interest I highly recommend the collection. The originals of most of the tracks you find on oldies specialty labels are owned by the huge media companies who don’t see a big enough market to interest them in putting them out. This leaves a niche market to be filled by various oldies labels. Like all of these, Eric licenses the material on their collections for a limited time and when the license runs out they stop making them and they start being offered only at very high prices by secondary sellers.
