Henry Cow were an English experimental rock group formed in Cambridge in 1968, active until 1978. Founded by Fred Frith and Chris Cutler, the band became known for a radical approach that blended rock, free improvisation, and contemporary composition. Rejecting conventional song structures, they emphasized collective authorship, complex ensemble writing, and musical exploration.

Closely associated with the Rock in Opposition movement, which they helped initiate, Henry Cow combined artistic ambition with a strong ideological stance against commercial constraints. Though their audience was limited during their lifetime, their influence has been lasting, and they are now regarded as one of the most uncompromising and innovative groups to emerge from British experimental music.

The Henry Cow Cow Box Redux Box was released by ReR Megacorp in late 2019 to coincide with the group’s fiftieth anniversary. The set gathers extensive studio and live material recorded between 1971 and 1978 across multiple discs, accompanied by detailed booklets and documentation that frame the band’s work as a unified and historically significant body. It revisits one of the most uncompromising catalogues to emerge from British experimental music, reframed as a unified body of work rather than a sequence of isolated releases. Henry Cow’s output has always resisted easy categorisation, sitting somewhere between rock, free improvisation, modern composition, and political statement. Presented in box form, the music gains a new sense of continuity, allowing the band’s restless intelligence and collective discipline to unfold over extended listening.

What becomes immediately apparent is the group’s commitment to structure within freedom. Even at their most abrasive or abstract, Henry Cow operate with intent. Themes recur, dissolve, and reappear in altered form, and the tension between composed material and open improvisation remains central throughout. Together, Oh Yeah! The Best of Dunwich Records [1991] and If You’re Ready, The Best of Dunwich, Vol 02 [1994] form a vivid portrait of one of American garage rock’s most distinctive regional scenes. Dunwich Records, based in Chicago, never had the national infrastructure of the coastal majors, but its impact was outsized, capturing a raw, teenage energy that sat somewhere between British Invasion pop, snarling garage rock, and early psychedelia. Heard as a single body of work, Vol 1 and Vol 2 feel less like separate compilations and more like two sides of the same story. Bots sete were released by Sundazed Music.

The first volume leans into immediacy. These are tracks built on urgency, fuzzed guitars, pounding drums, and vocals that sound as if they were recorded a heartbeat after the idea first formed. There is a sense of local identity running through the material, bands playing for dances, clubs, and radio slots rather than chasing polish. Songs hit hard, make their point, and move on, which is part of their lasting charm.

Volume two broadens the picture. The edges stretch slightly outward, revealing how the Dunwich sound evolved as the late 60s progressed. Psychedelic touches appear more frequently, grooves loosen, and a few performances take greater rhythmic and harmonic risks. What doesn’t change is the directness. Even when arrangements grow more ambitious, the music remains grounded in feel rather than technique.

Vol 1 and Vol 2 invite repeated visits rather than definitive conclusions. Each return reveals another rough edge, another great hook, another moment where raw enthusiasm outweighs perfection. The Pacific Jazz label always had a particular glow about it—cool‑toned, spacious, and unmistakably West Coast, but The Pacific Jazz Piano Trios set reveals just how deep that aesthetic ran when filtered through the hands of its pianists. Mosaic’s curation pulls together sessions that were never meant to form a unified narrative, yet they sit together with the coherence of a quietly unfolding story: small‑group jazz shaped by clarity, restraint, and a devotion to interplay rather than flash.

What stands out first is the engineering. Pacific Jazz sessions from the mid‑50s to early ’60s were recorded with a kind of intimate transparency, piano crisp but never brittle, bass warm and centered, drums feather‑light yet articulate. When presenting your submission, the Topic of your compilation should be Noted as well as the sound quality of the compilation. (i.e., 320Kbps MP3, Flac, etc).

Whilst most would prefer MP3's @ 320 kbps all I request is a good sound quality.

A track list must be supplied together with a LINK for your Compilation. (Please do not send the compressed file)

Artwork is not necessary but would be welcomed. All submissions need to arrive via email to:

Entries must be received by Midnight, Wednesday. (Wherever you are in the world.)

Once received, your entries will be checked for content matching the track lists provided. If an entry is considered unsafe or different to the track list provided it will be deleted. If your submissions are outside the guidelines they will not be included (No questions asked and no reply)
