VA - Factory Records, Communications 1978-92 [2008] (4 x CDs)

FACTORY RECORDS

VA - Factory Records, Communications 1978-92 [2008] (4 x CDs)

Four CDs covering 15 years in roughly chronological order: Communications 1978-92 has the difficult task of summarizing a famously wayward label. As you might expect, it can't do the job painlessly. Factory's magnificent, quixotic approach to branding-- catalogue numbers for buildings! Record sleeves that lost money on every purchase! -- helped build its legend, but also acted as a smokescreen for its erratic quality control. Almost every label makes duff signings, but Factory's were somehow excusable because of the mystique surrounding the organization-- founder Tony Wilson's charm, patter, and heroic whim giving the impression that allowing Crispy Ambulance to make awful records was part of the grand plan as surely as the menstrual egg-timer (FAC 8) was. Take away the aura the label cultivated, and a lot of the music on the box set feels awkwardly exposed.

What saves it is Factory's uniquely local quality. Born out of Wilson's enthusiasm for the Manchester arts beat he covered for a regional TV show, Factory had a close relationship with the city's music scene from the start, which became positively symbiotic when the label opened a club there. "The Haçienda must be built" was the situationist slogan that gave the venue its name: "The Haçienda must be filled" was the more pragmatic principle guiding much of the Factory aesthetic from the second disc of this box set onwards. The club provides one (literally) concrete reason for Factory's status as the UK indie label that engaged first and fiercest with dance music, and tracks here from Quando Quango's bubbly "Genius" to Happy Mondays' threatening "Hallelujah" were designed for its dancefloors. And though the Haçienda never funded Factory, its legal and financial struggles amid the decline into violence of Manchester's club scene formed one backdrop for the label's collapse.

Being the center of a local scene has a big impact on the kind of bands a label works with. If you're a Manchester group in 1979 and you idolize Joy Division, who are you going to send your demo tapes to? Wilson may have been the presiding artistic spirit at Factory, but the musical agenda was set by whichever band was making the running and the headlines in the city-- Joy Division, then New Order, then Happy Mondays. Not only is each group well represented on this box set, so are several acts who sound roughly like them. This has the unfortunate effect that the most famous music here is almost by definition the best.

Luckily, each formula was rich enough to allow a few kinks, and time has often been kind to acts who were crucified as copyists in their day. Tunnel Vision's "Watching the Hydroplanes", a rant against 1950s Britain and its legacy set to monotonous hand-me-down post-punk, received across-the-board pans back in 1981: Free of that context you can better appreciate its odd, venomous intensity. There's also a sense in which the most generic, trend-chasing music can be more sharply evocative of a time and place than its innovators are-- the clumsy, defiant lilt of Northside's "Take 5" tells you more about British indie's response to dance music than the Mondays' far superior "Kinky Afro".

So by telling a story, Communications manages to make its mediocre tracks more interesting than they actually are. Luckily, there's also plenty of purely musical intrigue. The songs you already know are great sound greater still in the context of what they inspired, and there's also fun to be had tracing the careers of Factory stalwarts like A Certain Ratio from the primitive gloom of "All Night Party" through the rippling unease of "Knife Slits Water" and "Flight" to the slick, stiff funk they ended up playing (their whistles-and-tracksuits Latin dance incarnation is mercifully absent).

More than this, the label's parade of non-hits and fleeting pleasures brings out a few gems. It's hard not to like John Dowie's comical "It's Hard to Be an Egg", especially coming in the midst of the grey-raincoated first disc. OMD and James appear in early, rough-draft versions-- bands working in very different styles, but both giddy with ideas they're not quite up to realizing yet. Miaow's "When it All Comes Down" is a delicious piece of tweepop, Marcel King's "Reach for Love" is yearning digital soul, and Cath Carroll's elegant "Moves Like You" had the misfortune to be cool and thoughtful at a time when what the press wanted from Factory was libidinous lads.

And through it all runs the beat. "Blue Monday" and the Happy Monday's "W.F.L." may have kickstarted different phases of the label's relationship with dance music, but Factory was always ahead of the pack when it came to exploring the possibilities of space and groove: Martin Hannett's experiments in rhythm and dread helping set an agenda that the label never backed away from. Tony Wilson's death in 2007 makes it tempting to view this box set as a testament to one man's vision, ear, and dreadful business sense, and it's true that you'd probably have to be Tony Wilson to enjoy everything here. But what Factory achieved was greater than that, it helped build a city's idea of itself, and, in the wider community of British independent music, it kept the door open for eclecticism and idealism. The strength of this set is that you can hear that in the bad stuff as well as the good. (pitchfork.com)

SUGAR HILL

VA - Sugar Hill Records, A Retrospective 1978 - 2003 [2006] (4 x CD's)

Sugar Hill Records is a Folk/bluegrass label, started 1978 in Durham, North Carolina. Label owner and president is Barry Poss. In 1998 the label was sold to Welk Music Group and in 2015 acquired by Concord Music Group and merged under its Rounder Label Group.

With 4 x CD's containing 81 musical selections, one of Americana's leading indie labels celebrates its first 25 years. Actually, Sugar Hill passed the quarter-century mark in 2003, but such a handsomely packaged and lovingly annotated set arrives better late than never. Label founder Barry Poss made the selections and contributes anecdotes about each, with the sequencing following a chronological progression from 1978 to 2003. From its base in bluegrass, both traditional and progressive, the North Carolina label has subsequently branched into maverick Texas songwriters (Robert Earl Keen, Townes Van Zandt, Terry Allen, Guy Clark, James McMurtry) and bands as diverse as the Gourds, Bad Livers, and Donna the Buffalo. Though label stars such as Jerry Douglas, Nickel Creek (as a trio and in their solo efforts), and Dolly Parton are inevitably represented, the set also features the underexposed artistry of country singer John Starling and harmony trio Uncle Walt's Band. Though never signed to the label, Emmylou Harris provides harmonies all over the set, while Johnny Cash guests on two cuts. As Vince Gill notes in the accompanying booklet, "Whenever you bought music on Sugar Hill, even if it was by an artist, you were unfamiliar with, you'd be pretty sure it was something pretty great." (Amazon)

Beyond just the listening pleasures this set brings, it serves to expose one to a broad range of styles and artists that I never would have discovered. With this box, I can explore deeper into individual groups. For example, I had never heard of Red Knuckles, but they did my favorite of the whole set "If You Ain't Loving, You Ain't Living." A Capella Southern white male gospel singing was something else I wouldn't have dug into, but I discovered I loved the pieces here.

Bill Monroe - The Music of Bill Monroe from 1936 to 1994 [1994] (4 x CDs)

BILL MONROE

Bill Monroe - The Music of Bill Monroe from 1936 to 1994 [1994] (4 x CDs)

William Smith Monroe (September 13, 1911 - September 9, 1996) was an American mandolinist, singer, and songwriter, who created the bluegrass music genre. Because of this, he is often called the "Father of Bluegrass".  The genre takes its name from his band, the Blue Grass Boys, who named their group for the bluegrass of Monroe's home state of Kentucky. He described the genre as "Scottish bagpipes and ole-time fiddlin'. It's Methodist and Holiness and Baptist. It's blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound."

It's the rare artist who virtually invents a genre single-handedly, and there's no artist in any genre whose work has remained as dominant a force as Bill Monroe. The songs here not only define bluegrass, but they also remain the core of any bluegrass band's repertoire. Monroe added a dose of sophistication to traditional hillbilly music--intricate group harmonies, expert musicianship--and he rehearsed his Blue Grass Boys for hours on end. MCA's lavish 4 CD set covers 60 years and 98 songs, adding detailed notes and anecdotes. Beginning with 1936 duets with brother Charlie, the list of Blue Grass Boys reads like a roster of legends: Flatt and Scruggs, Chubby Wise, Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Martin, Vassar Clements, Sonny Osborne, Bobby Hicks, Kenny Baker, Bill Keith, Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, and Richard Greene; the list goes on and on, as does the legacy of Monroe's music. (Amazon)

These are the real Bill Monroe recordings, not all of them of course but a good sampling of his work from 1936 until 1994. Monroe died in 1996 so there is no more. In addition to creating his own musical genre Monroe was one of the defining figures of modern mandolin techniques. The new listener will find that his mandolin is often played in a complex melody or counterpoint, with runs fully equal to those of the best jazz clarinetist or saxophonist. In many of his tunes you will hear his mandolin skating around the tune like a dragonfly, darting here, there and yonder! Ignoring the rest of his musical impact his mandolin riffs alone are worth the price of these CDs.

Monroe and his bands marked the transition from old time country music to modern music's and sitting on the cusp of change his many styles were eclectic. These songs are likewise varied from classics like Dusty Miller, Soldier's Joy, Sally Goodin, Sailer's Hornpipe, et cetera, old time hymns and on into his later styles. There are blues, bluegrass and country songs which sound more modern, all of which bear his stamp of authenticity.

Anyone who knows of him knows that there were about 160 musicians who played with him and the Blue Grass Boys. Many of the living ones still call their music Bluegrass, but I guess that is kind of like Paul or Ringo playing an occasional Beatles song, just not the same. And once they're gone there will be no bluegrass at all, just copies of copies. (B)

Features most of Monroe's greatest recordings (plus many rarities too)

VA - Crawling Up a Hill- A Journey Through the British Blues Boom 1966-71 (3 x CD)

By 1965, the British R&B boom was over. Cyril Davies was dead, Alexis Korner was employed as MD on a children's TV show, and the legion of young acolytes the two men had inspired had drifted away from the blues and into mainstream pop stardom. The more "purist" individuals were out in the cold: Brian Jones was marginalized in the Stones by the emergence of the Jagger/Richards songwriting team, while Eric Clapton had stormed out of the most blues wailing Yardbirds in protest at their recording of winsome pop ditty 'For Your Love'. But things were about to change. In April 1966, club band John Mayall's Blues Breakers - prominently featuring a still-simmering Clapton - recorded their debut studio album with the aid of producer Mike Vernon. Released in July, the LP was a huge, entirely unexpected success, reaching the UK Top Ten and remaining in the charts for an impressive 17 weeks. Suddenly, an astonishing number of virtuoso young British (and Irish) blues guitarists, all of whom rejected the trappings of pop success as fervently as the young Eric, were inspired to form their own bands. In the wake of Clapton, his Yardbirds replacement Jeff Beck and Peter Green (Eric's replacement in Mayall's band after he'd split to form Cream) came the likes of Kim Simmonds, Jeremy Spencer, Stan Webb, Paul Kossoff, Alvin Lee, Clem Clempson, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore and Mick Ronson. Within a year or two of Mayall's unexpected breakthroughs, the second wave of the British blues boom was in full, glorious bloom. Featuring all of the above names, Crawling Up A Hill chronicles the development of the British blues scene during that relatively brief but halcyon period, covering both the electric blues bands (Mayall's Blues Breakers, Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown, Ten Years After etc) and the acoustic country blues acts (Jo-Ann Kelly, Mike Cooper, Ian A. Anderson and others). In addition, we feature a number of more obscure bands from the era, including Levee Camp Moan (responsible for two of the most feverishly collected albums of the era), pre-Faces outfit Quiet Melon and The Zany Woodruff Operation, now receiving their first-ever public exposure. (Amazon)

Crawling Up A Hill is a fascinating document of a genre that, though relatively short-lived, would have a seismic influence on the subsequent development of rock music.
