VA – Songs of the Earth, Astonishing and Rare Voices [1998]

This collection feels like opening a window onto the world and letting the voices of entire cultures drift into the room. Songs of the Earth was released in 1998 by Auvidis in partnership with UNESCO, and the set carries that unmistakable UNESCO spirit, respect for tradition, careful documentation, and a belief that human expression is worth preserving in its rawest form. Every track comes from a different corner of the globe, yet the album plays with a quiet unity, as if all these voices are answering one another across distance and time.

What strikes me first is the intimacy. These are not studio‑shaped performances. They are field recordings, ritual fragments, work songs, chants, and melodies that have lived far longer than any commercial genre. The Khyal excerpt opens the disc with a sense of weight and lineage, a reminder that some musical forms carry centuries inside a single breath. From there the album moves through Balinese Tjak, Ainu upopo, Inuit throat games, Islamic zikr, and Siberian laments. Each piece feels like a glimpse into a living tradition rather than a curated showcase.

The sequencing is gentle and deliberate. A children’s horse song sits beside a ritual chant. A round dance follows a mountain ballad. A grinding‑millet song closes the disc with a rhythm shaped by daily life rather than performance. The effect is grounding. You begin to hear the shared human impulse behind all of it: to mark time, to honour ancestors, to celebrate, to mourn, to teach, to remember.

What makes the set so powerful is the way it refuses to smooth anything out. The textures remain untouched. You hear breath, room tone, wind, the shuffle of bodies. These details give the recordings their life. They remind you that music is not always crafted for an audience. Sometimes it is simply part of the world, as natural as weather.

Songs of the Earth becomes a quiet, astonishing journey. It invites the listener to slow down, to hear voices that rarely travel beyond their own communities, and to recognise the beauty in forms that exist far outside the commercial frame. It is a rare document, and a deeply human one. (B)

John Coltrane - The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings [1997] (4 x CDs)

SUNDAY JAZZ

JOGN COLTRANE

John Coltrane - The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings [1997] (4 x CDs)

There are live jazz recordings that document a moment, and then there are recordings that change the way you hear the music altogether. Coltrane’s 1961 Village Vanguard tapes belong to the second group. When I sit with this set, I feel as if I’m stepping into a room where the air itself is charged, where every musician is listening harder than usual, and where Coltrane is pushing past the edges of what his quartet had already mastered. These performances were recorded over four nights in November 1961, and the box set gathers them with the kind of care that lets the listener feel the shape of the week as it unfolded.

What strikes me first is the sense of exploration. Coltrane was moving into new territory, working with Eric Dolphy, Reggie Workman, Jimmy Garrison, McCoy Tyner, and Elvin Jones in shifting combinations. The music stretches, contracts, and opens again. Pieces like India, Spiritual, and Chasin’ the Trane feel less like tunes and more like living structures, built in real time. You hear Coltrane searching for new colours, Dolphy answering with lines that seem to bend the room, and Jones driving everything forward with a pulse that never settles.

The set also reveals the quieter moments. Naima and Greensleeves appear not as breaks from intensity but as reminders of Coltrane’s melodic grounding. Even in the most exploratory passages, there is a deep sense of purpose, a clarity that holds the music together.

Listening through the complete recordings, you begin to understand why these nights became legendary. They capture a band in transition, a leader reaching for a new language, and a club that allowed the music to unfold without limits. What you hear is not a polished statement but a process, a search, a series of doors opening one after another. It remains one of the most revealing and transformative listening experiences in jazz. Playing For Change videos are all over Ytube. Artists from around the world contribute snatches which are built into a complete song. This is a sampler I put together. Some start quietly but all are listenable IMHO. They are in alphabetical order, I could noy decide on a sequence.

19) I think maybe the first they did. Some of the writers/artists join in. My fav is 15) Yusuf/Cat joins in. (They seem to love Bob Marley, but so go I!). Enjoy.

ACID HOUSE

VA - Terry Farley Presents Acid Rain' [2013] (5 x CDs)

Acid Rain, released in 2013 by Harmless Records, is one of those rare archival projects that feels both exhaustive and alive. Terry Farley approaches the history of UK acid house not as a museum display but as a living ecosystem, built from twelve‑inch singles, white labels, club‑only mixes, and the kind of records that travelled through hands rather than charts. The set gathers tracks from the late eighties and early nineties, a period when the sound was still forming its identity, shaped by small studios, cheap drum machines, and the energy of nights that stretched into morning.

Farley’s curation gives the box its shape. Instead of leaning on the obvious anthems, he digs into the deeper shelves, pulling together cuts that show how acid house grew from Chicago imports into a distinctly British movement. You hear the shift from raw, looping grooves to more atmospheric pieces, the way producers began stretching the 303 into new shapes, and how the scene absorbed influences from hip‑house, techno, and early rave. The sequencing across the discs lets these changes unfold naturally, as if you are listening to a long night in a club where the mood keeps turning but the pulse never breaks.

Harmless Records supports the project with detailed notes, label credits, and clean transfers that respect the original pressings. The archival care matters, because these tracks were built for dancefloors, not preservation, and hearing them restored without losing their grit gives the set its weight. Acid Rain becomes a portrait of a culture in motion. It captures the moment when acid house stopped being an import and became a language of its own, carried by DJs, dancers, and producers who found freedom in repetition, tension, and the glow of a single synth line cutting through the dark. LO-FI

VA - Hollow Rooms, A Lo-Fi Sequence (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

"Lo-fi" is often described in technical terms, tape hiss, overloaded microphones, uneven levels, the sound of limitations made audible. Yet the recordings gathered here suggest something more enduring. Across four discs, lo-fi emerges not simply as a production style but as a way of preserving intimacy. These are songs that draw strength from proximity. Voices sit close. Instruments feel within reach. The listener is invited into the room rather than presented with a finished spectacle.

The collection follows a deliberate path through the development of lo-fi music from the late 1980s into the late 1990s. Rather than functioning as a genre survey, it traces a gradual shift in how artists used imperfection, first as necessity, then as choice, and eventually as a means of creating entirely new emotional spaces.

CD1 Origins: Cassette / Outsider Core, captures the music in its rawest state. Daniel Johnston, Jandek, and Chris Knox sound less concerned with performance than communication. Guitars drift in and out of tune, recordings wobble, and room noise becomes part of the composition. Yet these apparent flaws bring a startling immediacy. The songs feel lived rather than produced, carrying the texture of ordinary rooms and private moments.

CD2 On Formation: Lo-Fi, Becomes Indie Language, the music gains shape without losing intimacy. Sebadoh, Smog, and their contemporaries retain the closeness of home recording while introducing stronger melodic structures and arrangements. The sound is still modest, but the songs begin to reach outward. What once felt solitary becomes communal, creating a shared vocabulary that would define much of independent music during the decade.

CD3 Peak: Emotional Acoustic Resolution, places songwriting at the centre. Elliott Smith, Songs: Ohia, and Bonnie Prince Billy use restraint with remarkable effect. Acoustic guitars ring softly, voices remain understated, and small details carry enormous emotional weight. Nothing is overstated. The recordings trust silence, allowing feeling to emerge through phrasing, melody, and careful observation. Here, lo-fi becomes almost transparent, serving the song rather than announcing itself.

CD4 Dissolution: Afterimage and Atmosphere, gradually loosens the connection between song and structure. Low, Bark Psychosis, and Movietone stretch the music into wider spaces where mood and texture become increasingly important. Notes linger. Rhythms slow. Arrangements open outward. The intimacy remains, but it is transformed into something more spacious and reflective, music that seems to hover at the edge of memory.

Hollow Rooms tells a story that extends beyond recording methods. It documents artists finding beauty in limitation, discovering emotional depth in simplicity, and creating music whose power comes from honesty rather than perfection. The hiss, the room sound, the rough edges, all remain part of the experience, but they are never the destination. What endures are the songs themselves, vulnerable, resilient, and deeply human. The closer you listen, the clearer the point becomes: lo-fi is not about what is missing. It is about what remains.
