ACCORDION

VA - Accordion Rocks (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1 + CD2

Accordions (from 19th-century German Akkordeon, from Akkord—"musical chord, concord of sounds") are a family of box-shaped musical instruments of the bellows-driven free-reed aerophone type, colloquially referred to as a squeezebox. A person who plays the accordion is called an accordionist. The concertina and bandoneón are related; the harmonium and American reed organ are in the same family. The instrument is played by compressing or expanding the bellows while pressing buttons or keys, causing pallets to open, which allow air to flow across strips of brass or steel, called reeds. These vibrate to produce sound inside the body. Valves on opposing reeds of each note are used to make the instrument's reeds sound louder without air leaking from each reed block. The performer normally plays the melody on buttons or keys on the right-hand manual, and the accompaniment, consisting of bass and pre-set chord buttons, on the left-hand manual. (Wikipedia)

The accordion has been used in folk and country music for a very long time, very popular with Polkas, Zydeco and the World music of the sound emitting around a Parisian cafes.  Believe it or not the Accordion is also popular in rock. The accordion an unlikely contender for a rock instrument but I am thrilled to hear it in the contemporary music. It’s got a soft, pastoral sound that creates a distinct flavor in a song, whilst not taking on levels of a guitar lead break. Its an atmospheric sound that at times can be surprisingly energetic. The accordion really adds extra flavor to a track often giving a celebratory or joyful atmosphere.

Here are 50 of my favorite Accordion tracks in Rock.  Enjoy!

  4. WHATTTT? No Myron Floren....just kidding, though it's the first name that pops into my head, along with Frankie Yankovic, because growing up in a German-American household, these guys were my parents' rockers. Not mine, you understand.....
