Alex Harvey - The Last of The Teenage Idols [2016] (14 x CDs)

 ALEX HARVEY

Alex Harvey - The Last of The Teenage Idols [2016] (14 x CDs)

Universal Music pays tribute to the short but prolific musical life of enigmatic Glasgow blues-rocker Alex Harvey with the biggest-ever, career-spanning, cross-label collection of his work. This box set is a tribute to the musical legacy of Alex Harvey, the Glasgow blues-rocker who died in 1982 at 46, one day short of his 47th birthday. It features 217 remastered tracks from his diverse and prolific career, spanning different labels, genres, and bands. 21 tracks are unreleased, and 59 are on CD for the first time. The box set starts with the debut album of Alex Harvey And His Soul Band, which is on CD for the first time. It also includes five bonus tracks from 1964, three of them unreleased, and two from a live album recorded in Hamburg. The second disc contains the unreleased 2nd Album, which Polydor rejected in 1964. Harvey was unhappy with Polydor, and his next album, The Blues, was an acoustic solo effort with his brother Les on guitar. It was a rare and expensive collectors’ item, but now it is on CD with two bonus tracks: his first Fontana single Agent Double-O-Soul and Go Away Baby. CD04 features his second album Roman Wall Blues (1969), plus Fontana and Decca singles and a rare demo of Harp, which became a SAHB favourite. CD05 showcases Harvey’s varied projects: Hair Rave Up (from his stint in the musical Hair), Rock Workshop (his 13-piece band with Ray Russell in 1970) and his solo album The Joker Is Wild (1972). The next eight CDs cover the SAHB years, from their debut Framed (1973) to their last Rock Drill (1977). Each disc has bonus live tracks, including their hits Delilah and Boston Tea Party on TV shows. There is also a rare 24-minute spoken word piece by Harvey from a promo-only album. CD13 also includes three songs by Quad, his next band after SAHB, recorded for Radio 1 in 1978. CD14 features selected tracks from his three post-SAHB albums, plus a previously unreleased home demo of Billy Bolero. This box set is a lovingly packaged collection that celebrates one of the most original and influential artists in rock history. (B)

If you are a fan of Alex Harvey, this box set is a must-have. It contains all the albums he recorded with his band The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, as well as his solo albums and some rare and live tracks. The sound quality is excellent, and the packaging is superb. The box set is a fitting tribute to one of the most original and influential artists in rock history.

  2. Another wonderful selection BB - thank you so much. I saw SAHB in the UK back in the 70's - absolutely brilliant concert - great showmanship, as well as exciting music. Still get a chill when I hear the opening bars of The Faith Healer.

    1. Hi LeKermitage.
Thanks for that. Alex Harvey says a lot in the interview portions. One thing he says he is more of an actor than a musician... He loved being a showman that gave people their monies worth. Enjoy listening to this set.
      Cheers.
