VA - Shrine The Rarest Soul Label Vol. 2 [2002]

Shrine, The Rarest Soul Label Vol. 2 builds upon the legacy of Vol. 1, continuing to uncover the rare and elusive sounds of Shrine Records, one of the most mysterious soul labels of the 1960s. Released in 2002 by Kent Soul, this collection dives deeper into the Shrine archives, offering more forgotten gems that showcase the label’s distinct style.

Shrine Records had an incredibly short lifespan, operating in Washington, D.C., during the mid-'60s under the direction of Eddie Singleton and Raynoma Gordy. While the music was rich with passion and talent, the label struggled commercially, and a tragic warehouse fire wiped out much of its catalog. These surviving recordings are now legendary among collectors, making the Shrine compilations essential listening.

Much like Vol. 1, Vol. 2 delivers a mix of upbeat grooves and heartfelt ballads, capturing the essence of Shrine’s roster. Some tracks had never been released before, making this collection an even greater discovery for soul fans. The energy, harmonies, and deep emotions running through these songs prove that Shrine Records was ahead of its time.

For those who enjoyed Vol. 1, this follow-up is just as exciting. The remastered recordings, detailed liner notes, and historical insights help keep the spirit of Shrine Records alive. Together, these volumes tell the story of a label that, despite its brief existence, left an undeniable mark on soul music. (B)
