VINTAGE BURLESQUE
VA - Stripped (A Butterboy Compilation) (6 x CDs)
Across theatres, lounges, back rooms, and neon‑lit stages, a particular kind of music has always carried the weight of the tease. It wasn’t built for radio, and it rarely chased the charts, yet it shaped entire rooms: brass that curled like smoke, drums that nudged the pulse forward, guitars with a knowing swagger, and rhythms designed for bodies in motion. STRIPPED gathers that lineage into one place, tracing the sound of burlesque from its earliest orchestral cues to the modern revival that reclaimed it for a new generation.
These six CDs move through that history like a walk through adjoining rooms. Just open the curtain and walk in...
CD1 steps into the classic era, where bump‑and‑grind orchestras and smoky combos set the original template.
CD2 slides into sleaze‑jazz, all late‑night horns and low‑lit grooves.
CD3 kicks the tempo up with go‑go shakers and stage‑floor stompers.
CD4 drifts into exotica, the fantasy world of tiki bars, island mirages, and lush percussion.
CD5 brings the story forward with the neo‑burlesque revival, where swing, cabaret, and noir‑soul found new life.
CD6 gathers the greatest stripper songs from across eras - the themes, riffs, and rhythms that became part of the culture itself.
What binds it all is the quiet force of intention. Every track here was built to move, slow, deliberate, playful, or electric. Some were staples of mid‑century clubs, others became modern favourites in the hands of performers who understood the power of rhythm and restraint. None of it is coy, and none of it is crude. It’s music with purpose, crafted to frame a moment, guide a gesture, or hold an audience in the space between anticipation and release.
STRIPPED isn’t a costume or a gimmick. It’s a history of how sound shapes performance, and how performers shape sound in return. Across six discs, it celebrates the musicians who gave burlesque its pulse and the performers who turned that pulse into art. (B)
Also, as a BONUS find the 1943 movie - Lady of Burlesque
Lady of Burlesque (1943) stands as the most faithful cinematic snapshot of classic American burlesque, blending backstage grit with the wry humour and sensual tease that defined the era. Adapted from Gypsy Rose Lee’s novel, the film captures the chaotic rhythm of a working burlesque house, costume mishaps, rivalries, comic bits, and the ever‑present tension between glamour and danger, while Barbara Stanwyck anchors it with a performance that feels both knowing and lived‑in. This fits so well is because of its authenticity, it isn’t a modern reinterpretation or a glossy musical, but a rare Hollywood attempt to portray the real ecosystem of performers, musicians, stagehands, and the nightly grind that shaped the burlesque tradition your anthology celebrates. (B)
Enjoy!

RIO compilation plz
ReplyDeleteHi tommyhaneef.
Delete?
Cheers.
Thanks! This should be a fun listen. The Stripper, by David Rose, has been a favorite of mine since it came out in the early 1960s (before I knew what strippers were, I might add...). I always enjoyed the tune when high school bands played it at basketball games and such...
ReplyDeleteHi Mike,
DeleteGreat to hear this one hits a familiar spot for you. The Stripper really was everywhere in the early ’60s. Funny how we all heard it long before we understood what it was “for.” Still a cracking arrangement and a perfect fit for this set. Enjoy!
Cheers.
Thanks BB - am I going to need age verification to download this?
ReplyDeleteHi Dr Robert,
DeleteAll above board… though a smoking jacket and patent‑leather shoes would certainly elevate the moment. Add a fez as the finishing touch, it changes everything.
Cheers.
Thanks for another great idea and compilation ! Only one missing at first glance is 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' by the mighty Joe Cocker (what's in a name ?). Oh, and the song Jamie Lee Curtis dances to while stripping for Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1994 film True Lies is "Por una Cabeza" (a classic tango song).
ReplyDeleteHi Cor,
DeleteGlad this one grabbed you straight away. You Can Leave Your Hat On is a mighty suggestion. It’s a fun one to imagine in the mix.
Thanks for the kind words.
Cheers.
Another great idea and surprise with a solid structure!
ReplyDeleteThank you BB!
Hi John,
DeleteReally appreciate that.
This one was a joy to shape, and I’m glad the structure is solid and surprising.
Thanks for listening always and for your kind words.
Cheers.
Thanks Butterboy. This looks great. Another Butterboy "must-have"!
