Bud Shank & Bob Cooper - Mosaic Select 10 [2004] (3 x CDs)

Mosaic’s tenth Select set brings together the complete Pacific Jazz and World Pacific collaborations of Bud Shank and Bob Cooper, documenting a partnership that shaped the sound of West Coast jazz in the mid‑1950s. These sessions, recorded between 1954 and 1958 at Capitol Studios and Radio Recorders in Los Angeles, show two reed players exploring tone, texture and ensemble writing with unusual clarity. The box presents the material in chronological order, restoring the original context of albums that were scattered across 10‑inch LPs, studio releases and a celebrated live date at Cal‑Tech.

The early sides from 1954, including Valve Head, Cool Fool and Wailing Vessel, come from Shank’s Bud Shank and Three Trombones sessions, arranged by Cooper and built around the distinctive sound of valve trombones. These pieces reveal Shank’s Parker‑influenced alto phrasing and Cooper’s thoughtful writing, already pointing toward the flute and oboe combinations that would define their later work. The Radio Recorders dates from late 1954 and early 1955 add Low Life, Out of This World and Rustic Hop, with Cooper’s tenor providing a warm counterbalance to Shank’s alto.

The 1956 live recordings from Cal‑Tech capture Shank’s quartet with Cooper as guest, reviving their flute and oboe pairing on tunes like Lullaby of Birdland and Moonlight in Vermont. The response to this concert led directly to the November 1956 studio sessions that produced Flute ’N Oboe, where Shank and Cooper are joined by Howard Roberts, Don Prell and Chuck Flores, and on several selections by a string quartet with Cooper’s finely detailed writing.

The final sessions from 1958 broaden the palette, with Shank moving between alto, tenor and flute, and Cooper between tenor, bass clarinet and oboe. These tracks, originally issued across The Swing’s to TV, Jazz Swings Broadway and Blowin’ Country, show two musicians expanding their sound while remaining rooted in the lyricism and precision that defined their work together.

Mosaic Select 10 preserves the full arc of this partnership, presenting a clear, complete portrait of Shank and Cooper’s contribution to West Coast jazz. (B)

    1. Hi Richard,
West Coast jazz has a feel all its own, that clarity, that cool precision, and Bud Shank was right at the centre of it. His tone, his phrasing, the way he moved between instruments… always a joy to revisit.
      Cheers.
