The early instalments set the tone. Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 lean heavily on rough‑cut soul and early R&B, the kind of tracks that sound like they were recorded in rooms where the walls shook. By Vol. 3 and Vol. 4, the series begins to widen, pulling in sharper horns, faster grooves and more regional flavours. Nothing feels tidy. Everything feels alive.

As the years move on, the series becomes more playful. Vol. 5 arrives with its “Special Titty Shakers!!!” subtitle, a cheeky nod to the bump‑and‑grind roots of early soul. Vol. 11 dives into heartbreak and lovers’ themes, while Vol. 12 throws a “Barbecue Soul Party,” capturing the outdoor warmth of summer grooves. Each volume has its own personality, shaped by the curators’ love of obscure singles and dance‑floor energy.

The final stretch, Vol. 13, pushes into Latin soul, boogaloo and crossover rhythms. It’s a reminder that soul has always been porous, absorbing whatever rhythms pass through the neighbourhood. The percussion tightens, the horns brighten, and the dance‑floor becomes a global space.
