VA - Phase 4 Stereo Spectacular, Nice 'N' Easy [2016] (40 x CDs (50 Albums))

Imagine the sound of a living room in 1965, walnut console, polished brass knobs, and a record spinning with impossible clarity. That’s the world Phase 4 Stereo Spectacular,Nice ’N’ Easy recreates, forty discs of orchestral colour and studio precision, restored and boxed in 2016 by Decca. The series was born from a mid‑century obsession with fidelity, where engineers treated stereo as theatre and arrangers painted with microphones instead of brushes. Listening now, it feels like stepping into a time when sound itself was spectacle.

The opening discs centre on Ronnie Aldrich and His Two Pianos, whose arrangements glide between jazz phrasing and cinematic sweep. Unforgettable, Secret Love, April in Portugal, each track moves with the grace of polished mahogany and the shimmer of tape echo. The production is lush but never heavy, every instrument sits in its own pocket of air. As the set unfolds, the mood shifts from ballroom elegance to lounge intimacy, touching Latin jazz, big‑band swing, and light classical textures. It’s music built for space — not dance floors, but rooms where sound could bloom.

What makes this box remarkable is its scale. Forty discs trace the full reach of Decca’s Phase 4 catalogue: orchestras, studio ensembles, and soloists all recorded with the label’s signature depth. The engineers used multiple microphones and wide panning to create movement inside the mix, violins sweeping left to right, percussion blooming behind the listener. It was technical showmanship, but it served the music. The result is a kind of sonic architecture, where melody and arrangement become part of the room itself.

For collectors, Nice ’N’ Easy is both document and experience. It preserves an era when recording was an art form, when stereo promised immersion rather than convenience. The performances may sound refined, but beneath the polish lies genuine warmth, musicians playing with care, engineers chasing perfection, and a label capturing the optimism of modern sound.

It’s easy to dismiss “easy listening” as background, yet here it feels like design: crafted, balanced, and quietly human. Phase 4 Stereo Spectacular reminds us that technology once served emotion, and that even the most polished surfaces can carry deep feeling. (B)

    3. Hi Mike,
What a great memory to have. Those hunts through Tokyo and Yokohama must have been fantastic. Phase 4 albums were treasures to track down, and doing it together like that makes the whole collection even more special. Fun days indeed.

  4. WOW! Thank you so much for this (and everything, really). My parents had the "Foreign Film Festival" album, and I was obsessed with it (listening to it on their 1965 walnut console with polished brass knobs). I am thrilled to see what other delights were part of the "Phase 4" family.

    1. Hi Scott,
What a wonderful memory, that walnut console, those brass knobs, and Foreign Film Festival spinning away. Phase 4 albums had a way of making everything feel larger than life, and it’s great to hear this collection brought that whole world back for you. There were so many delights in that series, and revisiting them is always a joy.
      Cheers.

  6. Butterboy and K, what a great post, a nostalgia trip into the days of Decca Phase 4 - I owned a few of these albums (which were considered very 'unsquare' by my contemporaries - what did they know? I also remember the EMI equivalent releases on
EMI Phase 2 (I think). A lot of listening here, to thank you for these.

    2. Hi Man from Mordor,
A wonderful note, thank you. Phase 4 really was its own world, and it’s great to hear it stirred up that nostalgia for you. Those albums were unfairly labelled “square” at the time, yet they were some of the most adventurous studio productions around. And yes, Studio 2 was EMI’s answer, lush, elegant, and beautifully recorded. Plenty of listening ahead indeed.
      Cheers.

  8. We has the first sampler lp and from there bought The Sizzling 20s and Ted Heath. It always made me smile when they were advertised on Radio Luxembourg, which was on 208m wave with very poor reception, to show off spectacular stereo sound!

    1. Hi Paul,
That’s a terrific memory, those early sampler LPs were a gateway for so many of us. Trying to show off spectacular stereo through that famously wobbly 208m reception was part of the charm.
      Cheers.

  9. The use of stereo separation is about the best I've ever heard. Thanks for making these transfers of this comprehensive set of such a high quality. If one ever gets a hold of the Bernard Herrmann box set movie scores on Phase 4, I'd love to hear them!

    1. Hi Richard,
You’re absolutely right, the stereo separation on these Phase 4 recordings is extraordinary. The engineers pushed the format further than almost anyone else, and when the transfers are clean, the whole soundstage opens up in a way that still feels modern. Really glad the quality of this set stood out for you.
I do have that Bernard Herrmann Phase 4 set (The Fantasy Film World of... on Decca Phase 4). It will be shared in the near future, it’ll be a pleasure to bring it forward. Those scores deserve to be heard in all their widescreen glory.
      Cheers.

    2. That's great BB, awfully kind of you, I look forward to those great Herrmann scores and on Phase 4 no less. I looked into the Phase 4 a little bit. This is an interesting 5 minute video of. the mixing, mikes and mike placement techniques by the Phase 4 engineers which might interest you.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mSselTZySM&t=60s
