A BOX OF...
Cars - A BOX OF... Cars [1978 - 2017] (16 x CDs)
The albums collected in this set document one of the most distinctive catalogue runs of the new wave era. When The Cars emerged from Boston in the late 1970s, they arrived with a sound that blended concise pop songwriting, rock instrumentation and modern keyboard textures in a way that felt entirely their own. Their self-titled debut, The Cars (1978), established the template immediately. Songs such as Just What I Needed, My Best Friend's Girl and Good Times Roll introduced a band with a gift for memorable melodies, economical arrangements and a polished studio approach that stood apart from both traditional arena rock and the raw energy of punk.
The albums that followed expanded upon that foundation without losing sight of what made the group unique. Candy-O (1979) refined the debut's strengths with greater confidence and sharper performances, while Panorama (1980) explored more atmospheric and experimental territory. Shake It Up (1981) returned to a more direct and accessible approach before Heartbeat City (1984) delivered the band's greatest commercial success, producing enduring hits including Drive, Magic and You Might Think. The catalogue concluded with Door To Door (1987), bringing to a close a remarkable decade-long run of studio albums that consistently balanced innovation, craftsmanship and broad popular appeal.
Listening through these albums today reveals how successfully The Cars bridged the divide between rock and pop. Guitar hooks, synthesizer textures, vocal harmonies and tightly structured songwriting were combined with unusual precision, creating records that sounded contemporary without relying on passing trends. The contrasting vocal styles of Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr added further depth, giving the albums a variety that kept the band's sound fresh from record to record.
The influence of these recordings can be heard throughout the decades that followed. The Cars demonstrated that synthesizers and guitars could coexist naturally within mainstream rock, helping to define the sound of American new wave while appealing to a broad audience. Their albums became fixtures of radio and early MTV, yet their lasting reputation rests on the strength of the songs themselves. Heard together, the records in this collection reveal a catalogue built on consistency, melodic invention and a clear artistic identity, qualities that continue to make The Cars one of the most admired and enduring bands of their era.
