ART OF FIELD RECORDINGS

VA - Art Of Field Recording Vol. 01 + Vol. 02 [2007-2008] (8 x CD's)

Although he's not exclusively a folklorist or musicologist by profession, Art Rosenbaum has been making field recordings since his teenage years. The four-CD, 110-track box set Art of Field Recording, Vol. 1, as big as it is, has just a portion of the folk music he's documented between 1956 and 2007. It's divided into four separate thematic discs, one a "survey" or sampling of the breadth of what he's recorded; one devoted to religious songs; one for blues; and one comprised of instrumental and dance tunes. If nothing else, the sheer size and variety of this anthology is impressive; if it doesn't include every last strain of American folk music, it certainly covers more of them than almost any comparable collection. There's country blues, gospel, fiddle music, fife and drum, a cappella vocal, Mexican corrido, and pieces on which the primary or sole accompaniment is pump organ or mouth bow. The Gospel Supremes' "Do, Lord, Remember Me" verges on classic-style soul music, yet many other performances, if not exactly amateur, are certainly casual snapshots of common folk playing music for their own edification rather than out of any professional ambition. A few names here and there will be familiar to the folk or blues specialist, like Scrapper Blackwell, Yank Rachell, and Buell Kazee. But mostly these are performers working wholly outside of the commercial music business, even including an a cappella vocal of a children's ballad by Rosenbaum's father (which Art Rosenbaum rightly acknowledges might not be to everyone's taste in his liner notes)..... Like the first volume of Art of Field Recording, this second installment is a four-CD box set of considerable size and scope of field recordings by Art Rosenbaum. The 107 tracks, recorded between 1956 and 2008 (the very year this set was issued), cover an enormous range of American traditional music. Cajun, Appalachian folk, country blues, gospel, Sacred Harp singing, sacred steel guitar, and a cappella vocals are among the styles documented. It might not quite get to everything, but it certainly captures plenty of approaches that had little to no exposure in the conventional commercial music business over this half century, yet were preserved and performed outside of the media spotlight. Like its predecessor, it's also divided into four separate thematic discs, though these are slightly different this time around. The first and second CDs are (as they were in Vol. 1) devoted to a "survey" disc encompassing a bunch of styles and a disc of religious material; the third and fourth go into different directions by presenting a CD of "accompanied songs and ballads," and another wholly of "unaccompanied songs and ballads," or songs performed a cappella. A few performers here and there will be known to folk fans (Cajun musicians the Balfa Brothers and Nathan Abshire, bluesman Scrapper Blackwell, Alice Gerrard, Buell Kazee), but mostly these are musicians without commercial profiles who make music because they want to, happening to get these performances taped by Rosenbaum.

This set unearths all manner of unknown Americana. Archivists Art and Margo Rosenbaum spent half a century recording obscure artists from the backwoods: parlour tunes, church hymns, slide blues, chain gang songs, Southern gospel and creepy country ballads. Complete with scholarly tome, the result is a riveting document of an all-but-vanished culture. An essential companion piece to Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. -- Uncut Magazine: ***** [5 stars out of 5]

VA - The Real Music Box 25 Years of Rounder Records [1995] + Bonus Disc (9 x CD's)
Since 1970, Massachusetts-based Rounder has been a stalwart sanctuary of various music at the root of what has recently been labeled "Americana." The retrospective is segmented into four thematic two-disc sets, each offering a staggering 30 to 50 tracks where legendary names rub shoulders with bright young Rounder talent. On Hills of Home (folk), Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly hang out with Rory Block and Alison Krauss; while Hand-Picked (bluegrass) highlights the likes of J.D. Crowe & The New South, Tony Trischka and Bela Fleck. Deep Blue (blues) captures a wide range of shades, from Professor Longhair and Champion Jack Dupree to Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and the Holmes Brothers. Louisiana Spice stews up a gumbo of New Orleans R&B, Cajun and zydeco, including Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Zachary Richard, and Boozoo Chavis. A final bonus disc captures 23 random Rounder samples, including psych-folk from The Holy Modal Rounders, Brave Combo's polka party, Jonathan Richman's childlike whimsy, and the Chicano rock of The Blazers. In some respects, this disc is the most satisfying of all just for its sheer breadth of scope. In all, a living, breathing, vibrant roots music encyclopedia. (AllMusic Review by Roch Parisien)

This is a great set of CDs. Good quality, and authentic. You can really sense the atmosphere of that time by listening to the music. The music is real.  It is a soundscape of incomparable depth and breadth - miles of music - full of surprises, listen to it again and again and find some new delight every time.
