VA - Atomic Platters, Cold War Music from the Golden Age of Homeland Security [2005] Vol.01- Vol.06

ATOMIC PLATTERS

VA - Atomic Platters, Cold War Music from the Golden Age of Homeland Security [2005] Vol.01- Vol.05

This is just about the most amazing box set I've ever seen! The second I heard about it, I knew it was going to be good, but I wasn't prepared for just HOW GOOD. Not sure how many of you are familiar with Bear Family Records, but they're a German label who specialize in super elaborate, incredibly detailed and well-researched releases, especially box sets, running the gamut from the women of Sun Records to the Everly Brothers to Ernest Tubb to Perez Prado to Flatt And Scruggs and on and on. Always very expensive and often hard to get, but once you lay your eyes and ears on one of their releases you realize it was worth all the trouble and worth every penny. And never was it truer than with Atomic Platters.

This years in the works set is a five cd, DVD, hardcover book, box set collecting "Cold War Music From The Golden Age Of Homeland Security", 5 plus hours of fifties and sixties, rock and roll, R&B and soul, either warning us of the dangers of Communism and the impending atomic war, or more playfully using the A bomb and Uranium and Communism as metaphors for love and romance and partying ("You Hit Me Baby Like An Atom Bomb", "Atomic Baby", "Fujiyama Mama", "Uranium Rock", etc.). Scattered throughout are loads of civl defense spots, most appallingly naive and utterly ridiculous, there's Groucho Marx explaining that we have a good chance of surviving an atomic war, Art Linkletter warning us to not use the phone in case of an atomic attack, and lots of other misguided warnings and advice from Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, Fred MacMurray, Tom Lehrer, Pat Boone, Connie Francis, Don Pardo, Johnny Cash, Boris Karloff and lots more, as well as tons of bizarre civil defense dramatizations and creepy little Leave It To Beaver style vignettes.

Then there's the music, lots of favorites you've heard on other comps, but an amazing amount or material you've never heard (and probably never thought you'd hear) anywhere as well as totally obscure tracks from some not so obscure artists. Some of the more recognizable folks: Roy Acuff, The Sons Of The Pioneers, Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, Bo Diddley, Dexter Gordon, The Louvin Brothers, Carl Perkins, Bing Crosby, Bill Haley, Doris Day, Hank Williams and more, but the lure is definitely the hundred or so other tracks, all catchy or bizarre or both, from a wild cast of one hit wonders.

As if that weren't enough, there is also a disc containing two full length spoken word records released in 1961, If The Bomb Falls and The Complacent Americans, both ridiculous and paranoid, laughable and goofy, but also sort of sad and creepy.... (Amazon)

VA - The Backbeat Of Rock and Roll [2012] (3 x CD's)

BACKBEAT

VA - The Backbeat Of Rock and Roll [2012] (3 x CD's)

The Backbeat Of Rock and Roll' brings together the great songs that didn't need a sing-along chorus or a life-defining one liner in their lyrics. This wordless journey includes the infectious grooves and finger-popping hits that relied on twangy guitars, syncopated rhythms, all-consuming organs and honking brass stabs. Sure, there's the odd mention of 'Tequila' and the odd instructional dance move but in this 92 track compilation, it's the back beat that takes centre stage as the perfect follow up to Famous Flames' acclaimed 'First Rock and RollRecord' CD. This collection, compiled by Dave Henderson from Mojo Magazine, contains 94 tracks from the 1950s, the glory days of instrumental music, the very backbone of rock 'n' roll, the spine of RnB and primitive pop music. An almost wordless journey that traverses dirty rock 'n' roll, syncopated be-suited dance moves, the glory of twangy guitars, RnB shuffles, sleazy jazz shakedowns and truly inspirational music. Littered with chart topping hits from rock 'n' roll legends including Duane Eddy, Johnny And The Hurricanes, Link Wray, The Ventures and The Champs, the album features a procession of radio-friendly favourites including 'Raunchy', 'Wild Weekend', 'Bongo Rock', 'Madison Time', 'The Happy Organ' and 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo'. 'Backbeat..' is chock full of inspirational moments which includes buried treasures like the northern soul gem 'Gonzo' by James Brooker, The Dyna-Sores' 'Jungle Walk' and The Frantics' 'The Whip', Nothing short of essential.(Amazon)

VA - Atlantic Unearthed Soul Brothers & Soul Sisters [2006]

ATLANTIC

VA - Atlantic Unearthed Soul Brothers & Soul Sisters [2006] (2 x CDs)

BROTHERS - The golden era of American soul music in the 60s and early 70s is synonymous with the classic soul sides produced by an array of legendary performers for Atlantic Records during that momentous musical time. And, beyond all the immortal soul and R&B hits and top charting singles the label released over the years, there are treasure-filled vaults of tapes storing countless more historic recordings by a host of remarkable talents. Compiled by soul music historian David Nathan, this new collection gathers rarities many previously unissued literally unearthed from the venerable Atlantic Records archives featuring soul men who are among the genre's all-time greatest.

SISTERS - Atlantic Records was one of the country's leading record companies in rhythm & blues and soul music. Here, in collaboration with Rhino Records, 16 rare tunes are presented from artists like Aretha Franklin, Barbara Lewis, Margie Joseph, Doris Troy, The Sweet Inspirations, Jackie Moore, plus some rarely heard artists as well. Some of these songs have never made it past being only released on the original 45, and others have never been heard before, period. These songs come from about 1964-1973; one of the last of the golden ages at Atlantic. This disc runs about 50 minutes but is very enjoyable. Definitely worth hearing, because it's not something you'd hear every day. One listen to the whole thing, and you'd be asking why some of these songs never saw the light of day again...until now! Woody Guthrie - My Dusty Road [2009] (4 X CD's)+Booklet

WOODY GUTHRIE

Woody Guthrie - My Dusty Road [2009] (4 x CD's) + Booklet

Woody's classic, mid-'40s recordings, sounding like you've never heard them before! These 54 tracks, including such classics as This Land Is Your Land; Pretty Boy Floyd; Hard Travelin'; Jesus Christ; Grand Coulee Dam, and Going down the Road (I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way), have been taken from newly discovered, original metal master's for the clearest sounding Guthrie recordings from any period, let alone the '40s. And those tracks also include six unreleased tunes, which will no doubt set folk historians and musicians the world over a-scurrying. It all comes packaged inside a replica of a vintage suitcase from the 1930s, with a 68-page, full-color book featuring extensive liner notes, rare photos, Woody's own lyric sheets and even facsimiles of his business card, a postcard to his wife and a booking card from the '40s. This set was made for you and me!
To a Guthrie fan, this collection is platinum on top of gold. The sound quality is pristine - it's like having Woody and his buddies in the room with you. The little suitcase is cute but it's what's inside that is so great; the book detailing the painstaking restoration of old metal masters and the discussions of each song in the collection. Even if you've heard these songs before, this collection is a new listening experience. (Amazon)

VA - What A Scream, The Best Screams in Rock CD1+CD2

SCREAMS IN ROCK

VA - What A Scream, The Best Screams in Rock CD1+CD2 (A Butterboy Compilation)

Screaming is an extended vocal technique that is mostly popular in "aggressive" music genres such as heavy metal, punk rock, and noise music. In heavy metal, the related death growl vocal technique is also popular. Intensity, pitch and other characteristics vary between different genres and different vocalists. Rock and roll (before the advent of heavy metal and punk rock) employed occasional brief screaming bits. In the 1950s, one principal screamer was Little Richard, beginning with his "Tutti Frutti" (1955)."Love Me" was a screamer in parts for Elvis as well as "Any way You Want Me" just to name two from '56. And even earlier in '55 at Sun on numerous cuts like "Trying to get To You" Elvis used his scream. Elvis Presley also screamed some of the lyrics to Jailhouse Rock in its original 1957 recording, although recordings of live performances of the song in Presley's later career featured him strictly singing the words, probably due to him moving toward more mature songs.  By the 1960s, the first take of John Lennon's recording of "Twist and Shout" for Please Please Me was the only take, since Lennon's voice was torn up, partly by the screams that peppered the song. Lennon, inspired by Arthur Janov's Primal Scream therapy, screamed in his later songs "Mother" and "Well Well Well" on John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. (Wikipedia)

Sometimes words are simply not enough in Rock. When rockers want to convey rage, frustration, pain, ecstasy and even joy, they will go for an ear-splitting scream.  They toss back their head throwing all caution to the wind for their precious and delicate larynx, and SCREAM. So, keep your earplugs nearby. Here are some of the great screams in Rock for your listening pleasure... Enjoy.

Dr. John - Remembered CD1+CD2 R.I.P.

MALCOLM JOHN REBENNACK

Dr. John - Remembered CD1+CD2       R.I.P.

Dr. John passed away yesterday. R.I.P.   In memory...

Dr John, the flamboyant New Orleans singer-pianist whose hoodoo-drenched music made him the summarising figure of the grand Crescent City R&B/rock 'n' roll tradition has died of a heart attack at age 77.

Malcolm John Rebennack (November 20, 1941 – June 6, 2019), better known by his stage name Dr. John, was an American singer and songwriter. His music combines blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll. Active as a session musician since the late 1950s, he gained a following in the late 1960s after the release of his album Gris-Gris and his appearance at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music. He performed a lively, theatrical stage show inspired by medicine shows, Mardi Gras costumes and voodoo ceremonies. Rebennack recorded more than 20 albums and in 1973 produced a top-10 hit, "Right Place, Wrong Time". The winner of six Grammy Awards, Rebennack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by singer John Legend in March 2011.In May 2013, Rebennack received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Tulane University.

Rebennack was born in New Orleans in 1941 of French heritage. Growing up in the Third Ward, he found early musical inspiration in the minstrel tunes sung by his grandfather and a number of aunts, uncles, sister and cousins who played piano. He did not take music lessons before his teens and endured only a short stint in choir before getting kicked out.  His father, the owner of an appliance store and record shop, exposed him as a young boy to jazz musicians King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, who later inspired his 2014 release, Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch. Throughout his adolescence his father's connections enabled him access to the recording rooms of rock artists, including Little Richard and Guitar Slim. He began to perform in New Orleans clubs, mainly on guitar, and played on stage with various local artists.

When he was about 13 years old, Rebennack met Professor Longhair. Impressed by the professor's flamboyant attire and striking musical style, Rebennack soon began performing with him, and began his life as a professional musician. At age 16 Rebennack was hired by Johnny Vincent as a producer at Ace Records. There, he gained experience working with many artists, including James Booker and Earl King. While a struggling student at Jesuit High School, he was already playing in night clubs, something the Jesuit fathers disapproved of. They told him to either stop playing in clubs or leave the school; he chose the latter, and from then on focused entirely on music.

In late 1950s New Orleans, Rebennack gigged with local bands including Mac Rebennack and the Skyliners, (Paul Staele/Dennis "Bootsie" Cuquet, drums; Earl Stanley, bass; Charlie Miller, trumpet; Charlie Maduell, sax; Roland "Stone" LeBlanc, vocals), Frankie Ford and the Thunderbirds, and Jerry Byrne and the Loafers. He had a regional hit with a Bo Diddley-influenced instrumental called "Storm Warning" on Rex Records in 1959. At A&R he and Charlie Miller recorded monophonic singles on 45s for Johnny Vincent and Joe Corona for local labels Ace, Ron, and Ric. He oversaw the rhythm section while Miller wrote the horn arrangements and headed up the horns. This continued until Miller moved to New York and to study music formally. Rebennack's career as a guitarist was stunted circa 1960, when his left ring finger was injured by a gunshot during an incident at a Jackson, Mississippi gig. After the injury, Rebennack concentrated on bass guitar before making piano his main instrument, developing a style influenced by Professor Longhair.  Rebennack became involved in illegal activities in New Orleans, using and selling narcotics and running a brothel. He was arrested on drug charges and sentenced to two years in a federal prison at Fort Worth, Texas. His sentence ended in 1965 and he left for Los Angeles. He moved to Los Angeles in 1965 where he became a "first call" session musician in the Los Angeles studio scene in the 1960s and 1970s and was part of the so-called "Wrecking Crew" stable of studio musicians. He provided backing for Sonny & Cher (and some of the incidental music for Cher's first film, Chastity), for Canned Heat on their albums Living the Blues (1968) and Future Blues (1970), and for Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention on Freak Out! (1966). (Wikipedia)

Mac Rebennack was a colourful and interesting character as was shown throughout his career. Here a few tracks to remember him by... R.I.P.  Dr.John

VA - Gumbo Magic (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

What is Gumbo?
Gumbo is often cited as an example of the melting-pot nature of Louisiana cooking where it is the most famous and, very likely, the most popular. It is a dish served with the correct amount of heat and spice that your mouth begins to water up when the dish is near you. You feel absolutely wonderful after consuming it and you are left wanting more. Gumbo crosses all class barriers, appearing on the tables of the poor as well as the wealthy.

These tracks have a variety of styles related to Creole, Cajun, Swamp Blues, Zydeco, Jazz Swing and Blues music.  I have posted this type of music here before but not made a compilation, so I hope it suits your palate.  First time Gumbo Cook. It consists primarily of a strongly flavored, roux-based Blues Rock, meaty flavour's and hint of chili. This version of Gumbo has no thickener added. Like the Gumbo dish it is served steaming hot and is flavoursome. Dig in and enjoy Gumbo Magic.
