Fairport Convention - The Lasting Spirit, The Collection [2005] (3 x CD's)

FAIRPORT CONVENTION

Fairport Convention - The Lasting Spirit, The Collection [2005] (3 x CD's)

British folk-rock band Fairport Convention started out in 1967 and over time has become a group that enjoys a unique relationship with its friends and fans. Beginning as a US folk rock influenced band, Fairport was always eager to draw from the best of intelligent contemporary songwriting, frequently including covers by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell in their live sets. With the arrival of the great Sandy Denny, the band’s material became broader based thanks to the British folk songs that Sandy brought to the table. The rest is history. The talented members of the band such as Ashley Hutchings, Dave Swarbrick and the legendary Richard Thompson together eagerly embraced the new music that Sandy Denny brought to their attention and the result was the emergence of new and fully formed British folk-rock.

Through a mindboggling series of line-up changes, Fairport Convention have kept the spirit of British folk--and folk-rock--burning for nearly 40 years. This 3 x CD anthology carefully selects some of the rarest and most enticing jewels from the back reaches of their catalog, including full coverage of their triumphant appearances at the Cropredy festival. (Amazon)

This Fairport Convention set represents a startlingly good idea that comes off well, a compilation of live performances from across the group's history, intermingling class concert recordings from back as far as the late '60s with much more recent work from the Cropredy Festival. What one comes away appreciating anew is just how good a rock band Fairport has been for most of its history -- at their best, in fact, as represented here (including recent performances by Richard Thompson), they come off as at least as good a rock band as, say, Jethro Tull is a folk outfit, if not better. The sound is good, even on the older material (which goes back to Julie Dyble's tenure with the group), and the selection covers a huge range of repertory, some of which will surprise and delight casual fans who may not know all of the strings to this band's bow. VA - Feel Like Jumping The Best of Studio One Women [2015]

STUDIO ONE WOMEN

VA - Feel Like Jumping The Best of Studio One Women [2015]

Feel Like Jumping is a 16-song compilation of woman vocalists that have recorded at Studio One throughout its history. As is customary for reggae liner notes, information on dates is fragmentary, though actually the notes are for the most part pretty good and detailed as reggae compilations go. It seems apparent, however, that the earliest of the selections date from the late '60s, and that the bulk of the tracks span the late '60s to the early '80s, although a few of these are 1999 recordings. Further clouding the waters, some of these are extended mixes done as late as 1999, or versions with overdubs not present on the original. So, what of the music? It's decent, although not extraordinary for the most part, Studio One productions that owe more to rock-steady than to any other reggae sub-genre. Only Marcia Griffiths, and perhaps Hortense Ellis, are renowned reggae performers. Although this observation might betray the bias of American ears, it does seem as though the most outstanding material is covers of American and British soul, rock, and pop tunes, like Norma Fraser's "First Cut Is the Deepest" (originally done by Cat Stevens, but based upon the cover by P.P. Arnold), Hortense Ellis' nice rendition of the Jimmie Rodgers pop tune "Secretly" (with a bubbly organ), and Dawn Penn's moody take on Bo Diddley's "You Don't Love Me" (here retitled "No No No"). A real oddity is Jerry Jones' 1970 cover of Les McCann & Eddie Harris' fluke jazz hit "Compared to What," not only because of the unusual translation of jazz-pop to reggae, but because Jones was actually an American singer recording in Jamaica. (AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger)

This album is an absolute gem - for those in the know, the title track by the talented Marcia Griffiths (of Young Gifted and Black UK hit fame - with Bob Andy) is worth the price of admission alone.

VA - Milk of the Tree, An Anthology of Female Vocal Folk and Singer-Songwriters [2017] (3 x CD's)

FEMALE FOLK

VA - Milk of the Tree, An Anthology of Female Vocal Folk and Singer-Songwriters [2017] (3 x CD's)

Notwithstanding one or two isolated exceptions, it wasn't until the mid 60's that independent female voices really began to be heard within the music industry. Over the course of four hours and sixty tracks, Milk Of The Tree focuses on the music made in the late 60's and early 70's in both Britain and North America by either female solo artists or acts with featured female vocalists. Along the way, we encounter San Franciscan psychedelia, LA folk rock, Swinging London pop-folk, electric folk, progressive folk and even folk club folk as well as (of course) a plethora of singer- songwriters (including Various ladies of the Canyon) from the movement's golden age. As well as featuring most of the leading figures from both sides of the Atlantic, Milk Of The Tree includes many performers who received little attention at the time but who now have a cult reputation amongst collectors. A significant number of tracks were unreleased at the time, while the set also includes the first-ever appearance by pioneering female rock duo Emily Muff, two American girls who were based in England during the period in question but failed to land a recording contract. With a 44-page booklet crammed with rare photos and details of the Various acts featured, the clam box housed Milk Of The Tree is not only a fascinating social document but, we hope, a hugely entertaining snapshot of a particular time, place and frame of mind that produced some enduring, spellbinding music. (Amazon)

A superb compilation of female folk and singer-songwriter tunes, thoroughly annotated and good sound considering diversity of sources and the obscurity of some cuts.

Bob Weir - Box Of Bob (8x CD's)

BOB WEIR

Bob Weir - Box Of Bob (8x CD's)

Bob Weir - Robert Hall Weir, born October 16, 1947, is an American musician and songwriter best known as a founding member of the rock band Grateful Dead. After the Grateful Dead disbanded in 1995, Weir performed with The Other Ones, later known as The Dead, together with other former members of the Grateful Dead. Weir also founded and played in several other bands during and after his career with the Grateful Dead, including Kingfish, the Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, RatDog, and Furthur, which he co-led with former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. In 2015, Weir, along with former Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, joined with Grammy-winning singer/guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti to form the band Dead & Company. The band remains active.

During his career with the Grateful Dead, Weir played mostly rhythm guitar and sang many of the band's rock-n-roll and country & western songs. In 1994, he was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead.

Weir was born in San Francisco, California, to John (Jack) Parber and a fellow college student, who later gave him up for adoption; he was raised by his adoptive parents, Frederic Utter and Eleanor Cramer Weir, in the suburb of Atherton. He began playing guitar at age thirteen after less successful experimentation with the piano and the trumpet. He had trouble in school because of undiagnosed dyslexia and he was expelled from nearly every school he attended, including Menlo School in Atherton and Fountain Valley School in Colorado, where he met future Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow.  On New Year's Eve 1963, 16-year-old Weir and an underage friend were wandering the back alleys of Palo Alto, looking for a club that would admit them, when they heard banjo music. They followed the music to its source, Dana Morgan's Music Store. Here, a young Jerry Garcia, oblivious to the date, was waiting for his students to arrive. Weir and Garcia spent the night playing music together and then decided to form a band. The Beatles significantly influenced their musical direction. "The Beatles were why we turned from a jug band into a rock 'n' roll band," said Bob Weir. "What we saw them doing was impossibly attractive. I couldn't think of anything else more worth doing." Originally called Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, the band was later renamed The Warlocks and eventually the Grateful Dead.

Included in The BOX of BOB are the following albums.

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY #30

The Other One, The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir [2014] MP4

The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir is a documentary film about Bob Weir, who rose to fame as a guitarist and singer in the rock band the Grateful Dead. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23, 2014. It was distributed through Netflix starting on May 22, 2015. The film runs for an hour and twenty-five minutes.

The film was directed by Mike Fleiss. The film features newly conducted interviews with living band members and friends including Bob Weir and his wife Natascha, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and John Perry Barlow, along with other musicians such as Mike Gordon, Perry Farrell, Lee Ranaldo, Jorma Kaukonen, and Sammy Hagar.  Speaking of the film, Mike stated: "We certainly unearthed a lot of buried treasure from the Grateful Dead archive while making this film," said filmmaker, Mike Fleiss. "With Netflix, we have found the perfect global partner to tell the fascinating life story of Bob Weir set against the backdrop of America's greatest rock band.". Fleiss also stated that: “I wanted to give Bob his moment to shine,” Fleiss says. “I wanted to shine a light on his contributions to culture and rock and roll.”  The film won an Audience Award at the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival for Best Documentary Feature.   Talking about the film, Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary and Comedy, said: "Mike Fleiss was given unprecedented access to create an intimate and compelling film about one of the most prolific, respected and beloved musicians of our time" and also stated that "We are proud to bring Bob's story to his fans around the world on the eve of the Dead's final shows at Soldier Field in Chicago. VA - Thank God It's Friday [1978] (2 X CD's)

TGIF

VA - Thank God It's Friday [1978] (2 X CD's)

Sure, Thank God It's Friday is widely acknowledged to be a turkey.  But this soundtrack isn't as atrocious as you might expect, especially if you enjoy disco's Euro strain. Unlike Can't Stop the Music and its exclusive Village People focus, there are many artists represented here, ensuring a fair amount of nuggets. The tracks produced by Giorgio Moroder and his acolyte Pete Bellotte are particularly lush in a robotic kind of way. Donna Summer's contributions include the classic "Last Dance" and a pretty fabulous version of Serge Gainsbourg's "Je t'Aime Moi Non Plus" a good 20 years before it was hip to cover him.

I wore my original record album out years ago. I'm glad that I decided to purchase the CD. It brings back memories and gives me a chance to "work out" by practicing the dance routines I used to dance. It isn't like going to the gym, but for me it's better! Great CD. Takes you back to the disco era and this is where the soundtrack was better than the film, absolutely worth a listen.  (Amazon)
