LIVERPOOL SOUND

VA - Liverpool Sounds (75 Classics from the Singing City) [2015] (3 x CDs)

As you drive into Liverpool you will see a sign Liverpool 'Home of The Beatles', which is absolutely true, but the city's contribution to popular music is far greater than that, covering the years before the Beatles, the Beatle years themselves, and more recent times. The Wall of Fame in Mathew Street salutes Liverpool's number 1 hit-makers and there is plenty of space for further additions. Compiled and annotated by author and BBC Radio Merseyside broadcaster Spencer Leigh, Liverpool Sounds presents 75 tracks which, by and large, relate to the pre-Beatles area. There are great songs, great comedy and great performances, and every track is here for a reason. There are many hit singles and several number 1s. Even if the Beatles had been born elsewhere, the city would still have made an enormous contribution to modern popular music. From Lita Roza's (How Much Is) That Doggie In The Window (1953) to the Hillsborough Justice Collective's He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother (2012), there have been 56 Number 1's from Liverpool. The earliest tracks on 'Liverpool Sounds: 75 Classics From The Singing City' are from the late Thirties, by Dingle-born comedian Arthur Askey; the most recent are 1965 beat recordings made at the Cavern club's Cavern Sound recording studio. In between you will hear jazz performed by the Merseysippi Jazz Band and George Melly, folk courtesy of Stan Kelly and The Spinners (including the traditional Johnny Todd, the tune of which is familiar as the theme to the long-running Merseyside-based police TV drama series Z-Cars), and pre-rock era popular vocalists like Frankie Vaughan, Lita Roza, Michael Holliday and comedian Ken Dodd. Other popular local sons of Liverpool include rockers Billy Fury and King Size Taylor & The Dominoes, and, inevitably, The Beatles (here in their own right and with Tony Sheridan) as well as beat group contemporaries Gerry & The Pacemakers (archival recordings from 1961) and Howie Casey & The Seniors. As a bonus, you can hear Johnny Gentle (who was backed by the Beatles on a 1960 Scottish tour) reminiscing on John Lennon's hand in creating his song I've Just Fallen For Someone. (Amazon)

Whilst the subtitle says "75 Classics from the Singing City" there is actually 76 tracks... go figure!

DREAM POP/SHOEGAZE/SPACE ROCK

VA - Southeast of Saturn + Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2 [2020 - 2022] (2 x CDs)

Third Man Records 2020’s Southeast of Saturn and 2022's Southeast of Saturn Vol. 2, is a collection of music from Detroit’s space-rock/shoegaze/dream pop scene of the ‘90s.

The music of Southeast of Saturn did not arise organically from metro Detroit's fertile soil. Locally, garage-rock, goth-rock, neo-hippie groups, and the usual preponderance of adequate bar bands dominated the landscape. Thirsty Forest Animals guitarist Andrew Peters summarizes the prevalent attitude among the Motor City's space-rock contingent: "I don't think we really noticed the local Detroit scene earlier on. We were more into the bands you would see in the NME / Melody Maker, zines, and records - mostly from the UK - on the walls at Play It Again". If anything was a major factor locally, it was Play It Again, the independent record store in the suburbs of Detroit that nurtured the scene with it's amazing curation of imports and killer used records picked up on owner Alan Kovan's British record buying trips. The second volume expands upon the Michigan-centric aural delights purveyed on Vol. 1, by including groups from throughout the Midwest. Highlighting groups spanning Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, Vol. 2 works to cement the Midwest's status as a breeding ground for the space-rock and shoegaze subgenres, which more famously burgeoned in the UK. There are no big names or crossover artists on these two CDs however, for those who know that digging deep in the real and virtual record bins yields the greatest rewards. Third Man Records was smart enough to gather some of the great music from Detroit's Space-Rock era. This album is a must have for anyone who lived during that movement, or if you simply want to zone out.  Third Man Records was smart enough to gather some of the great music from Detroit's Space-Rock era. BB LUCKY DIP #173

Lucky Dip's will be a mystery gift to those who choose to pick them up.

Today's topic: FRENCH PROG

Stephen's Quote of the Day:

“In every place, people are generally surprised and curious, especially about our language. They hear their own words, their own story, listening to the lyrics: Spanish people say "It's nice, you sing in Spanish!", Brazilian people say "Hey, it's great! You use Portuguese in your vocals!", and others "Why do you sing in Latin?" As you see, we are kind of universal band!”

BRITISH INSTRUMENTALS

VA - Great British Rock 'n' Roll Instrumentals, Vol. 01+ Vol. 02 [2010-2011] (4 x CDs)

Smith & co. whose "Just About As Good As It Gets" series has already issued much of the cream of the era in various genres, bring two volumes of Great British Rock 'n' Roll Instrumentals. The latter end of the fifties saw the emergence of what some 'purest' aficionados consider, the first seriously good Brit Rock 'n' Roll in the form of instrumental hits. Certainly, America was the leader in this genre, but the British caught on during the 1950's producing a large number of highly creditable recordings, many of which are completely forgotten today. This Collection may help to set the record straight with Instrumental and Rock 'n' Roll fans alike finding many welcome surprises wandering through these. There's a great deal of extraordinarily good stuff here, including some piano boogie woogie, and some good covers of American hits as well. All lovingly mastered recordings feature on each of these double CD collections. Vol. 01 focuses on Original Rock 'n' Roll recordings 1949-1959 and Vol. 02 focuses on Original Rock 'n' Roll recordings 1952-1961. (Amazon)

Thelonious Monk - The Complete Blue Note Recordings [1994] (4 x CD's)

JAZZ SUNDAY

THELONIOUS MONK

Thelonious Monk - The Complete Blue Note Recordings [1994] (4 x CD's)

This magnificent limited-edition set launched the Mosaic label in real style. Included are all of Thelonious Monk's Blue Note recordings, six sessions as a leader from 1947-52 complete with alternate takes plus two titles cut with tenor-saxophonist Sonny Rollins in 1957. Since these were Monk's first opportunities to lead his own recording dates, this set includes the original versions of such classics as "Ruby, My Dear," "Well You Needn't," "Off Minor," "In Walked Bud," "Evidence," "Criss Cross" and "Straight No Chaser" along with Monk's first chance to record "'Round Midnight" and "Epistrophy." The sidemen include such notables as trumpeters Kenny Dorham and Idrees Sulieman, drummers Art Blakey and Max Roach, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, altoist Lou Donaldson and tenor-saxophonist Lucky Thompson, but it is the unique pianist/composer who is the main star. Many of these recordings (generally the master takes) has been reissued in other forms by Blue Note. (AllMusic review by Scott Yanow)

Monk's "Complete Blue Note Recordings" is/are an excellent set of CD's, both educational about an important phase of development in jazz history, and enjoyable from the standpoint of simply listening to some wonderful performances.
