Sir George Ivan Morrison OBE (born 31 August 1945) is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and record producer. His professional career began as a teenager in the late 1950s playing a variety of instruments including guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone for various Irish showbands, covering the popular hits of that time. Van Morrison rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B band Them, with whom he recorded the garage band classic "Gloria". His solo career began under the pop-hit oriented guidance of Bert Berns with the release of the hit single "Brown Eyed Girl" in 1967. After Berns's death, Warner Bros. Records bought out his contract and allowed him three sessions to record Astral Weeks (1968). Though this album gradually garnered high praise, it was initially a poor seller.

Moondance (1970) established Morrison as a major artist, and he built on his reputation throughout the 1970s with a series of acclaimed albums and live performances. He continues to record and tour, producing albums and live performances that sell well and are generally warmly received, sometimes collaborating with other artists, such as Georgie Fame and The Chieftains.

Much of Morrison's music is structured around the conventions of soul music and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)", "Domino" and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as the album Astral Weeks and the lesser known Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic soul". He has received two Grammy Awards, the 1994 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, the 2017 Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2016, he was knighted for services to the music industry and to tourism in Northern Ireland. He is known by the nickname Van the Man to his fans.

The Cure - Standing on a Beach - 45 Years - 1978-2023 (2023] (3 x CDs)

The Cure are an English rock band formed in 1978 in Crawley, West Sussex. Throughout numerous lineup changes since the band's formation, guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter Robert Smith has remained the only constant member, though bassist Simon Gallup has been present for all but about three years of the band's history. Their debut album, Three Imaginary Boys (1979), along with several early singles, placed the band at the forefront of the emerging post-punk and new wave movements that had sprung up in the United Kingdom.

Beginning with their second album, Seventeen Seconds (1980), the band adopted a new, increasingly dark and tormented style, which, together with Smith's stage look, had a strong influence on the emerging genre of gothic rock as well as the subculture that eventually formed around the genre.

After the release of the band's fourth album, Pornography (1982), Smith introduced a greater pop sensibility into the band's music, and they subsequently garnered worldwide mainstream success. Their singles compilation Standing on a Beach (1986) sold four million copies worldwide by 1989, and they reached their commercial peak with the albums Disintegration (1989) and Wish (1992). The Cure have released 13 studio albums, two EPs, and over 30 singles, and have sold over 30 million albums worldwide. Their most recent album, 4:13 Dream, was released in 2008. The Cure were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

There has never been a true CD representation of The Cure's best singles, B-sides and album tracks compiled in chronological order all in one place.

Based on the very positive response to the original compilation I decided to revisit it and expand it to a 3CD set. It now includes EVERY official Cure single release, plus a number of classic album tracks and a couple of B-sides, the songs which are most loved and true fan favourites, all in chronological order.

This new set now features ‘A Forest’ (Original 1980 7" Single Version) which is incredibly rare having never been officially released on CD. The versions we see on CD are either the full-length album version (which was the same version used on the 12" single), or the 'Shortened Edit' which is neither the album mix nor the single mix - it basically takes certain elements from both!

I definitely think this is an improvement on the original compilation and much more comprehensive and inclusive.

1973 was a stellar year for music, particularly in the UK where so many great singles were released, and a perfect opportunity to celebrate 50 years since so many legendary songs graced the charts.

Acts like David Bowie, Gary Glitter, the Sweet, Slade, the Carpenters and Wizzard would have the best chart years of their careers. Teenybop stuff was alive and well with David Cassidy and The Osmonds peaking. Plus, lots of new acts like Mud, David Essex, Suzi Quatro, Medicine Head and, erm, Barry Blue came through.

Tony Orlando and Dawn had the best-selling single of 1973 with "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree", which spent four weeks at the top spot and lasted 11 weeks in the top 10.

Slade became the first act to have three singles enter the UK charts at number-one; "Cum On Feel the Noize", "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me", and "Merry Xmas Everybody" (which also became the year's Christmas number-one single). The glam-rock group had two further singles in the UK top 10 this year. They also reached number two in October with their single "My Friend Stan". They had five entries in total this year but this included "Gudbuy T'Jane" from the latter part of 1972.

Another glam-rock band who made it big in 1973 was Wizzard, fronted by Roy Wood. Wood had previously achieved chart success a member of both The Move and Electric Light Orchestra.

Wizzard scored four top 10 singles during the year, which included the number-one hits "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers", as well as their Christmas classic "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", which peaked at number four for four consecutive weeks.

10cc achieved the first of their three UK number-one singles in June of this year with "Rubber Bullets", which spent one week at the top spot. They also reached number ten in September with "The Dean and I".

One-hundred and twenty-eight singles were in the top ten in 1973. Eight singles from 1972 remained in the top 10 for several weeks at the beginning of the year, while "The Show Must Go On" by Leo Sayer and "You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me" by The New Seekers featuring Lyn Paul were both released in 1973 but did not reach their peak until 1974. "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues, "Shotgun Wedding" by Roy C and "Solid Gold Easy Action" by T. Rex were the singles from 1972 to reach their peak in 1973. Twenty-nine artists scored multiple entries in the top 10 in 1973. David Essex, Leo Sayer, Marie Osmond, Mud and Wizzard were among the many artists who achieved their first UK charting top 10 single in 1973.

The 1972 Christmas number-one, "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" by Little Jimmy Osmond, remained at number-one for the first three weeks of 1973. The first new number-one single of the year was "Block Buster!" by The Sweet. Overall, seventeen different singles peaked at number-one in 1973, with Slade (3) having the most singles hit that position.

Twenty-nine artists scored multiple entries in the top 10 in 1973. Donny Osmond secured the record for most top 10 hits in 1973 with six hit singles. He scored three top 10 entries in 1973 as a solo artist, with "The Twelfth of Never" and "Young Love" both reaching number-one, and "When I Fall in Love" peaking at number four in November. His sister Marie made her top 10 debut in November with the number two hit "Paper Roses". Donny's total was boosted to six by his participation on The Osmonds recordings. The family group scored two top 10 entries in 1973 with "Going Home", which peaked at number four in July and "Let Me In", which peaked at number two in November. Their number two hit from November 1972, "Crazy Horses", remained in the top 10 for the first three weeks of 1973.

David Bowie peaked in the top 10 with five singles in 1973. He reached number two in January with "The Jean Genie", while "Drive In Saturday", "Life on Mars" and "Sorrow" all peaked at number three. His single "The Laughing Gnome", originally released in 1967, also entered the top 10, reaching number six in October. Little Jimmy Osmond had two individual entries, including "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" from 1972 and his number four single "Tweedle Dee" in April, as well as being a part of The Osmonds collective.

David Cassidy and Gary Glitter scored four top 10 entries in 1973. The Partridge Family singer David Cassidy had two hit singles as part of the group - "Looking Through the Eyes of Love" at number nine and "Walking in the Rain" peaking at number ten - as well as the number one hit "Daydreamer"/"The Puppy Song", and "I am a Clown"/"Some Kind of a Summer" which reached number three. Gary Glitter's first two entries, "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" and "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again", both peaked at number two, while the remaining two, "I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)" and "I Love You Love Me Love", both spent four weeks at number-one.

Solo artists Suzi Quatro, Barry Blue and David Essex all made their top 10 debut in 1973, and all three scored a second entry later in the year. Suzi Quatro made her top 10 debut in May with "Can the Can", which spent a week at number-one in June, while "48 Crash" peaked at number three in August. Barry Blue made his top 10 debut in August with "Dancing on a Saturday Night", which peaked at number two, while "Do You Wanna Dance" reached number seven in November.

David Essex made his top 10 debut in September with "Rock On", which peaked at number three, while "Lamplight" reached number seven in December.

The Sweet had three top-ten entries, among these chart-topper "Block Buster!". The other artists with three top 10 singles were 10cc, Elton John, Paul McCartney, T. Rex and Wings.

Gilbert O'Sullivan was one of a number of artists with two top-ten entries, including the number-one single "Get Down". Alice Cooper, The Carpenters, The Partridge Family, Rod Stewart, Roxy Music and Status Quo were among the other artists who had multiple top 10 entries in 1973.

Electric Sound Show is the official off-shoot CD compilation series that follows the long-deleted, vinyl-only compilation LP series, Incredible Sound Show Stories originally issued back in 1995 by Dig the Fuzz records. Particles presents for the first time ever, all five volumes as originally intended, providing a colorful voyage through the handsome and flamboyant heavens of psychedelia. Numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies only. This exclusive boxset provides complete and professional mastering with expansive and analytical liner notes from Psychomaniac, promising a wealth of archival material housed in a 56-page color booklet.  Collectors will be pleased to hear these 121 rare popsike tracks on CD.

In the last few years there have been a flurry of CD box set releases of old psych vinyl collections. More than any other though, this compiles global psych, mostly from Europe and Australia, with the UK and US contributions, and a great selection the compilers have made. If you never had the LPs, you will be amazed at the quality of the international material, some really trippy dreamy tracks that sum up psychedelia perfectly. I'd compare this to the Perfumed Garden in musical quality, just that as I said, it doesn't focus only on the British psych scene but extends to the globe, and with surprisingly good results. If you're a fan of (mostly) Adrenalin fueled English garage rock (before and during when garage rock reared its head in the U.S.) with attitude, straight out of the 1960's, this may be your cup of tea. Compiled by Greg Shaw (of Pebbles fame) this is basically non-stop prime era freakbeat. Full of singles that went basically nowhere, there's a lot of raw excitement throughout this set. But failed or not, it wasn't for trying by these mostly little heard groups. Has anyone really heard of Glenn Athens & The Trojans' "Let Me Show You How" in all its raw excitement? But throughout this set you'll come across names of people who would go on to greater things a bit later. As always in collections like this, there's a few tracks of lesser quality but even those sides fit into Shaw's trawl through this era of failed singles.

There are a few groups that may be familiar like The Groundhogs with a great period slice of rawness "Shake It". Or The Mickey Finn with "Garden Of My Mind". The Pete Best Four is here with "The Way I Feel About You". Also here is Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas with "Chinese Girl". Or possibly you've heard The Lancasters (with Ritchie Blackmore) doing "Earthshaker/ Satan's Holiday" (the latter tune is basically "Hall of the Mountain King"), and maybe a few others.  Each volume has some good period stuff like The Primitives' "Help Me". Steve Davies' "She Said Yeah". Or (The Animals in disguise?) The Wolf Pack's "We're Gonna Howl". Plus there's stuff like The Favorite Sons' "Walking Walking Walking". And Jason Eddie and the Centremen's "Come On Baby". Plus check out the Rhythm & Blues Inc. and their "Honey Don't". But these are just a few examples of the exciting goodies in this box set (also try the Soul Agents' instrumental "Gospel Train", or The Wheels' "Road Block") that are straight out of that prime era when garage rock/early punk-like attitude, mod, and some r&b all came together to create some pretty raw 45 RPM singles.  The mono sound is quite good overall--the remastering has cleaned up the majority of these sides.  Each disc comes in a good-looking period style cardboard jacket with a groovy cover and a track list on the back cover. Everything fits into a substantial cardboard clam shell style box. All in all, a good presentation of this music that many of us have probably never heard.  This is lesser-known groups who issued ultimately failed but good or great singles from the 60's. And "English Freakbeat Volumes 1 To 6" is one of the very best of this current crop. Check it out for a good adrenaline rush of period excitement.

This exclusive box set edition is testimony to not only the original kids who sweated it out on two sides of wax back in the 60's, but to Shaw himself whose affection for, and commitment to garage punk, needs no explanation.
