BRITISH DANCE

VA - Burn It Up, The Rise Of British Dance Music 1986-1991 [2025] (4 x CDs)

Burn It Up captures a moment when British dance culture stopped borrowing and started inventing. Between 1986 and 1991, the UK’s club landscape shifted from scattered underground scenes to a fully formed national identity, driven by independent labels, pirate radio, and a generation of producers who treated cheap gear as a creative advantage rather than a limitation. This set traces that evolution with a curator’s eye, pulling from 12‑inch singles, small‑run white labels, and early CD‑era crossovers that documented the country’s restless energy.

The compilation opens in the mid‑80s, when electro, rare groove, and imported Chicago house were still fringe concerns. Tracks from labels like Rhythm King, Jack Trax, and Warrior Dance show how quickly British producers absorbed those influences and pushed them into new shapes—harder drum programming, rougher sampling, and a distinctly UK sense of urgency. By 1988, the acid sound had taken hold, and the compilation highlights key releases that bridged warehouse culture with the charts, often pressed in modest quantities before demand exploded. Many of these sides first circulated through specialist shops and pirate stations, making their survival on Discogs today a testament to collectors who kept the lineage intact.

As the set moves into 1989–1991, the sound fractures into breakbeat, bleep, and early rave—genres that didn’t exist a few years earlier but now feel foundational. Sheffield’s Warp imprint, North London’s Shut Up And Dance, and Manchester’s Eastern Bloc orbit all appear in validated form, each representing a different regional pulse. What ties the era together is the sense of invention: producers working with Akai samplers, Roland boxes, and battered four‑tracks, creating music that felt communal, physical, and defiantly local. Burn It Up documents that rise with respect for the formats, the labels, and the scenes that shaped a generation. (B)

The world is marching unstoppable to the total replacement of the reality we are living in, with a fake one made by machines and that’s a bitter fact for those that still mind about individual personalities and human feelings. The Artificial Intelligence has invaded in our daily habits steadily and fast and is wrecking every human activity. The same stands for music!

A few months ago I heard a blues song by an artist I was not aware of and searching for his bio, I found that he simply doesn’t exist!

I searched for other same songs and discovered a whole new world of non-existent artists, creatures of imagination and songs constructed by the mechanical processes of artificial intelligence. The songs sound nice, I have to say, and they have even been categorized and spread to a lot of styles, BUT …they are AI products! Their lyrics touch on various classic blues themes, but with a focus on unspoken sexual fantasies, which I believe "sells" the most.

As one of the titles is “The Blues Don’t Care If It’s Man or Machine”, I thought to make a couple of blues sound compilations to share with you and I would appreciate to hear your opinion.

Do you care if it’s a man or a machine?

Cecil Taylor – The Complete in Berlin ’88 (13 x CDs Limited Edition)

CECIL TAYLOR

Cecil Taylor – The Complete in Berlin ’88 (13 x CDs Limited Edition)

What you’re looking at here is the most complete and revealing document of Cecil Taylor’s 1988 Berlin residency ever assembled. Originally issued by FMP (Free Music Production) in 1989 as a 10‑CD box, the project captured Taylor at a creative peak, solo, in duos, in small groups, and at the helm of a massive European orchestra. In 2015, FMP, in partnership with Destination‑Out, made the full archive available again, and that’s where the expanded 13‑CD edition comes into focus. This is the definitive version, gathering not only the original box but every related performance from that extraordinary month.

The structure of the set is part of its power. The first ten discs document the core residency: the orchestra works, the explosive duos with Tony Oxley and Derek Bailey, the trio with Evan Parker and Tristan Honsinger, and the solo concerts that show Taylor’s pianism in its most unfiltered form. These recordings were already monumental, but the expanded edition adds three crucial components that transform the project from a landmark into a complete historical record.

The first rarity is Legba Crossing, a disc originally included only in the first 200 copies of the 1989 FMP box. For years it was one of the most sought‑after items in the free‑jazz collector world. The expanded edition restores it to its rightful place in the narrative. The remaining two discs, Taylor’s East Berlin concert with Günter Sommer and an additional solo performance, were recorded during the same residency but released separately at the time. Bringing them together creates a unified, chronological portrait of Taylor’s month‑long creative explosion.

Why does this matter? Because Berlin ’88 wasn’t just a series of concerts; it was a laboratory. Taylor worked with European improvisers, classical‑leaning ensembles, and drummers from radically different traditions. The music is fierce, intricate, and deeply architectural, but it’s also full of discovery. The 13‑CD edition preserves every angle of that process, including material that was once nearly impossible to find.

For anyone serious about improvised music, this set isn’t optional. It’s a cornerstone, an immersive, uncompromising document of an artist reshaping the possibilities of sound in real time. it’s in line with Albert Ayler’s Spiritual Unity or John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. It’s simply a must. (B)

Please thanks CPT. HATEMONGER for this rare box set.

" from Cpt. Hatemonger's personal collection, and he hopes you all have a wonderful time listening☺️"

VA - Velvet Shadows (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

SOUL, JAZZ, BLUES

VA - Velvet Shadows (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

Velvet Shadows is a journey through the after‑hours corners of soul, jazz, and blues where intimacy and unease share the same space. Across four discs I’ve traced a lineage of voices and players who understood that the night is both sanctuary and reckoning. This isn’t music for the spotlight, it’s music for the people who move in silence, who speak in gestures and live in grooves. It’s music for the long walk home, for the quiet reckoning, for the slow burn.

CD1 begins with Gil Scott‑Heron’s Pieces of a Man, a reminder that social truth can be whispered as easily as shouted. From Luther Ingram’s wounded ballad to Nina Simone’s sly provocation, the disc balances confession with confrontation. Esther Phillips’ Home Is Where the Hatred Is anchors the mood, her phrasing turning Gil’s words into a smoky lament carved from midnight air. Rarities like Bobby Parker’s Blues Get Off My Shoulder and Leon Thomas’ Echoes remind us that the shadows often hide treasures overlooked by the daylight.

CD2 moves into darker hues, where Charles Bradley’s fire meets Nick Cave’s whispered menace. Barry Adamson’s noir funk and Marvin Gaye’s cinematic Trouble Man sketch urban landscapes lit by neon and shadow. Tricky, Timber Timbre, and Mark Lanegan extend the reach into modern gothic soul, proving Velvet Shadows isn’t bound by era but by atmosphere. Here, the lineage stretches from Little Willie John’s Fever (1956) to Curtis Harding’s With You (2021), nearly seven decades of nocturnal testimony.

CD3 is the most introspective, a disc of ballads and meditations. Mal Waldron and Jackie McLean’s Left Alone sets the tone, while Cassandra Wilson’s version of Strange Fruit and Morphine’s The Night deepen the reflection. Andy Bey, Moses Sumney, and José James carry the shadows inward, voices that ache with fragility and resilience. Doug Carn’s Infant Eyes and Gary Bartz’s Celestial Blues stand as spiritual jazz landmarks, rarities that collectors know but casual listeners rarely encounter.

CD4 closes with pure jazz immersion. Pharoah Sanders, Miles Davis, Mingus, and Donald Byrd remind us that shadows can be spiritual, modal, and transcendent. From Ellington’s sly swing to Axelrod’s cinematic sweep, the disc ends with Byrd’s Cristo Redentor, a benediction for the journey, a hymn carved in brass and silence.

Taken together, Velvet Shadows spans nearly eighty years of recordings, from Buddy Johnson’s wartime swing to Olw Rave’s contemporary fusion. It is collector‑grade, yes, but more than that it is a curated map of nocturnal moods: torch songs, blues confessionals, and jazz meditations sequenced to feel like one long night. Some records whisper. These ones smolder. It is velvet music, smooth yet heavy, soft yet unyielding. Shadows that comfort, shadows that confront. An invitation to linger in the velvet dark.

Curated with care. Sequenced for immersion. Made for those who know that the deepest truths are often whispered. Pour something dark. Dim the lights. Let the velvet shadows in. (B)
