The bands that filled stadiums, sold millions of albums and became household names naturally dominate the story. Their achievements are undeniable, but behind every great musical movement exists another history, one created by artists who experimented, influenced and innovated without ever receiving the recognition they deserved.

Missing In Action, Heroes of 70s Rock exists to explore that forgotten history.

The 1970s were the decade when heavy music was born. Before heavy metal had a clearly defined identity, musicians across the world were pushing rock into darker and heavier territory. They were experimenting with enormous guitar sounds, extended compositions, progressive structures and darker atmospheres. Some would help shape the future of doom, proto-metal, progressive metal and underground hard rock.

Many of these artists disappeared from the mainstream almost as quickly as they appeared.

Some released one extraordinary album and vanished. Some were signed to small labels with limited support. Others arrived at the wrong moment, caught between the decline of psychedelic rock, the rise of commercial hard rock and the changing musical landscape of the late 1970s.

But the recordings survived.

This box set is built around a simple idea:  The history of rock is incomplete without the forgotten pioneers.

Missing In Action, Heroes of 70s Rock is not simply a collection of obscure tracks. Rarity alone does not make a recording important. The purpose of this set is to uncover music that combines discovery, quality and historical significance — recordings that deserve to stand alongside the better-known landmarks of heavy rock history.

The final chapter explores the forgotten survivors of the late 1970s — the bands caught between the first generation of heavy pioneers and the explosion of a new metal era.

What makes this collection different is the attention to historical flow. These are not random discoveries placed together because they are rare. Each track has a role in telling the story of a generation of musicians who helped shape heavy music but were left behind by history.

That’s the world Phase 4 Stereo Spectacular,Nice ’N’ Easy recreates, forty discs of orchestral colour and studio precision, restored and boxed in 2016 by Decca. The series was born from a mid‑century obsession with fidelity, where engineers treated stereo as theatre and arrangers painted with microphones instead of brushes. Listening now, it feels like stepping into a time when sound itself was spectacle.

The opening discs centre on Ronnie Aldrich and His Two Pianos, whose arrangements glide between jazz phrasing and cinematic sweep. Unforgettable, Secret Love, April in Portugal, each track moves with the grace of polished mahogany and the shimmer of tape echo. The production is lush but never heavy, every instrument sits in its own pocket of air. As the set unfolds, the mood shifts from ballroom elegance to lounge intimacy, touching Latin jazz, big‑band swing, and light classical textures. It’s music built for space — not dance floors, but rooms where sound could bloom.

What makes this box remarkable is its scale. Forty discs trace the full reach of Decca’s Phase 4 catalogue: orchestras, studio ensembles, and soloists all recorded with the label’s signature depth. The engineers used multiple microphones and wide panning to create movement inside the mix, violins sweeping left to right, percussion blooming behind the listener. It was technical showmanship, but it served the music. The result is a kind of sonic architecture, where melody and arrangement become part of the room itself.

For collectors, Nice ’N’ Easy is both document and experience. It preserves an era when recording was an art form, when stereo promised immersion rather than convenience. Calypsoul 70 captures a decade when Caribbean music was shifting, absorbing soul, funk and jazz while keeping calypso’s heartbeat at the centre. These tracks come from small studios, hotel lounges and island labels that followed instinct rather than trend, giving the compilation a warm, handmade feel. It opens with bright horns and conversational vocals, then moves island to island, each cut carrying its own flavour — St. Vincent’s raw charm, St. Maarten’s smooth soul lean, Cuba’s rhythmic confidence through Los Van Van.

The set’s strength is its variety. Clarence Curvan blends brass and rhythm into an easy sway. Lancelot Layne adds political bite wrapped in humour. Boris Gardiner drifts through coastal calm, while Magic Circle Express and Biosis Now push toward funk and disco without losing the Caribbean pulse. In celebration of 50 years since XTC released their debut EP: 3D • EP on the Virgin Records independent record label on 7 October 1977, here is a splendid overview of their extraordinary work.

XTC were an English rock band formed in Swindon in 1972. Fronted by songwriters Andy Partridge (vocals, guitars) and Colin Moulding (vocals, bass), the band gained popularity during the rise of punk and new wave in the 1970s, later playing in a variety of styles that ranged from angular guitar riffs to elaborately arranged pop. Partly because the group did not fit into contemporary trends, they achieved only sporadic commercial success in the UK and US, but attracted a considerable cult following. They have since been recognised for their influence on Britpop and later power pop acts.

Partridge and Moulding first met in the early 1970s and subsequently formed a glam outfit with drummer Terry Chambers. The band's name and line-up changed frequently, and it was not until 1975 that the band was known as XTC. In 1977, the group debuted on Virgin Records and were subsequently noted for their energetic live performances and their refusal to play conventional punk rock, instead synthesizing influences from ska, 1960s pop, dub music and avant-garde. The single "Making Plans for Nigel" (1979) marked their commercial breakthrough and heralded the reverberating drum sound associated with 1980s popular music.

Between 1979 and 1992, XTC had a total of 10 albums and 6 singles that reached the UK top 40, including "Sgt. Rock (Is Going to Help Me)" (1980) and "Senses Working Overtime" (1982). After 1982's English Settlement, the band stopped concert touring and became a studio-based project centred on Partridge, Moulding and guitarist Dave Gregory. A spin-off group, the Dukes of Stratosphear, was invented as a one-off excursion into 1960s-style psychedelia, but as XTC's music evolved, the distinctions between the two bands lessened. XTC continued to produce more progressive records, including the albums Skylarking (1986), Oranges & Lemons (1989) and Nonsuch (1992). In the US, "Mayor of Simpleton" (1989) was their highest-charting single, while "Dear God" (1986) was controversial for its anti-religious message.

Due to poor management, XTC never received a share of profits from record sales (of which there were millions), nor from touring revenue, forcing them into debt throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1993, they went on strike against Virgin, citing an unfair recording contract, and soon extricated themselves from the label. Gregory left the band during the making of Apple Venus Volume 1 (1999), after which the XTC name was used by the duo of Partridge and Moulding. In 2006, Partridge announced that his creative partnership with Moulding had disintegrated, leaving XTC "in the past tense". Moulding and Chambers briefly reunited as the duo TC&I in the late 2010s. Partridge and Gregory remain musically active.

Root Damage feels like a night spent drifting through America’s back roads, where blues, garage rock and country‑punk spill out of small bars and half‑lit rooms. Sympathy For The Record Industry built its reputation on unruly, heartfelt music, and this two‑disc set captures that spirit with clarity. Nothing here is polished for radio. These are performances shaped by instinct, grit and the pleasure of playing loud.

The first disc sets the tone with raw blues and garage swagger. R.L. Burnside opens the door, and suddenly you’re inside a world where guitars growl, drums stumble with purpose and voices carry the weight of lived experience. The sequencing moves easily between moods, swagger, melancholy, humour, desperation, yet everything feels connected by the same rough charm. You hear musicians who aren’t trying to impress anyone. They’re simply doing what they do best: playing with conviction, letting the imperfections become part of the character.

As the set moves forward, the variety becomes its strength. Garage bands crash through short, sharp songs. Country‑blues outfits stretch grooves until they become hypnotic. Oddball storytellers appear, adding crooked humour and sideways perspective. The production values jump around, but that inconsistency becomes part of the appeal. It reminds you that these tracks were made in basements, back rooms and small studios, driven by urgency rather than budgets.

The second disc widens the frame even further. Swampy blues sits beside fractured garage noise. Country‑punk rubs shoulders with outsider rock. A few tracks lean toward surreal humour, others toward emotional weight, but all share the same sense of independence. You can hear the label’s personality in every choice, a love of the unruly, the regional, the heartfelt, the strange.

What makes Root Damage compelling is its honesty. It doesn’t try to tidy anything up or present a unified narrative. Instead, it celebrates the rough edges and the small stories that make American roots music so enduring. For collectors, it’s a snapshot of a label that championed the overlooked. For listeners, it’s a reminder that great music often thrives in the margins, loud, imperfect and full of life. (B)

This Mosaic Select set captures Don Pullen at a point where his ideas were expanding in every direction. Across three discs, the box presents music recorded between 1986 and 1990, a period when Pullen was moving from the fire of the Don Pullen–George Adams Quartet into new configurations that allowed him to explore colour, rhythm and emotional weight with greater freedom. The result is a portrait of a pianist whose imagination never settled, always reaching for fresh combinations of intensity and lyricism.

The first disc returns to the final years of the Pullen–Adams Quartet, a group whose chemistry was built on contrast: Adams’ raw, vocal tenor lines against Pullen’s sharp, percussive piano attack. These sessions, recorded at RCA Studios, show a band comfortable with long forms and sudden turns. Blues figures appear, dissolve and re-emerge. Ballads stretch into open space. Fast pieces carry a sense of risk. The music feels lived-in, shaped by musicians who trusted each other enough to push without hesitation.

The second disc marks a shift. With New Beginnings, Pullen steps into a trio with Gary Peacock and Tony Williams, two players whose presence changes the atmosphere immediately. The writing becomes more spacious, the phrasing more deliberate. Pullen’s touch, often associated with explosive runs and sharp clusters, reveals a quieter side, reflective, melodic, almost tender. Yet the intensity remains, now channelled through structure rather than sheer force. It is music that listens as much as it speaks.

The final disc, Random Thoughts, presents Pullen’s working trio with James Genus and Lewis Nash. These sessions show a pianist fully in command of his language. The pieces move with clarity, shaped by rhythmic ideas that shift under the surface. There is humour, there is grit, and there is a sense of narrative that unfolds without hurry. Pullen’s compositions here feel like stories told through contrast: bright against dark, dense against open, motion against stillness.

Mosaic Select 13 preserves a crucial chapter in Don Pullen’s journey. It documents a musician who refused to repeat himself, who treated each ensemble as a new canvas, and who carried emotional honesty into every performance. The set stands as a reminder of how broad Pullen’s vision was, fearless, inventive and always searching for the next shape the music could take. (B)
