A HERVE GUILLEMINOT PRESENTATION

VA - David Sylvian Circle (6 x CDs)

David Sylvian, born David Alan Batt on 23 February 1958, is an influential English musician, singer, and songwriter. He gained fame in the late 1970s as the front man and principal songwriter of the band Japan. With their androgynous look and increasingly electronic sound, Japan became a significant influence on the UK's early-1980s new wave scene.

After Japan disbanded, Sylvian launched his solo career with the album Brilliant Trees (1984). His solo work, described by AllMusic as "far-ranging and esoteric," includes collaborations with renowned artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp, Holger Czukay, Jon Hassell, Bill Nelson, and Fennesz. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Sylvian's recordings encompassed a blend of art rock, pop, jazz fusion, avant-garde experimentalism, and ambient music. In recent years, his compositions have increasingly drawn on musical minimalism and free improvisation.

As an admirer of David Sylvian, I consider him a first-rate singer-songwriter. Albums like Secrets of the Beehive (1987) hold a special place among the best pop/rock albums in my imaginary world top chart. Sylvian's artistic journey has parallels with that of Mark Hollis from Talk Talk. Both artists started with more commercial sounds—neo-romantic for Talk Talk and glam for Japan—before gradually transitioning towards abstraction. Their solo careers eventually led them to explore improvised neo-classicism (Hollis) and refined ambient music (Sylvian).

Although I haven't always been able to keep up with Sylvian's diverse and evolving career, I've tried to give you a glimpse of his world by associating him with artists who share his aesthetic. I hope you enjoy listening to this compilation as much as I enjoyed putting it together. If you want to delve deeper into David Sylvian's work, you can start with his first group, Japan, and then explore his solo career, including side projects Rain Tree Crow and Nine Horses. Don't forget to check out his numerous collaborations as well.

This compilation features 162 tracks divided into three roughly equal parts:

• Original songs by David Sylvian, solo or with his side projects Rain Tree Crow and Nine Horses.
• Artist collaborations with David Sylvian on vocals.
• Songs from artists or bands that may be part of David Sylvian's aesthetic universe.

Of course, these selections are subjective, and everyone is free to choose their favorites. Enjoy!

Thank you. (Hervé Guilleminot)

David Sylvian - Weatherbox [1989] (5 x CD's)

 DAVID SYLVIAN

David Sylvian - Weatherbox [1989] (5 x CD's)

David Sylvian (born David Alan Batt, 23 February 1958, Beckenham, Kent) is an English singer-songwriter and musician. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as the lead vocalist and main songwriter in the group Japan. His subsequent solo work is described by critic Jason Ankeny as "a far-ranging and esoteric career that encompassed not only solo projects but also a series of fascinating collaborative efforts." Sylvian's solo work has been influenced by a variety of musical styles and genres, including jazz, avant-garde, ambient, electronic, and progressive rock.

Weatherbox is a five-CD limited-edition box set by David Sylvian, released in 1989. Only 5000 copies were produced. The set comprises Sylvian's first four albums: Brilliant Trees, Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities, Gone to Earth and Secrets of the Beehive; and was, at the time, the only way to acquire all of the songs from Gone to Earth on CD.   Weatherbox is notable for giving each disc entirely new artwork based around the classical elements. The second half of Gone to Earth was retitled Gone to Earth Instrumental for this box set. The song "Preparations for a Journey" from Alchemy was removed, despite being part of the original album, and replaced by two tracks issued as B-sides to the "Pop Song" single. Gone to Earth was quietly remastered for Weatherbox. Also, the re-recorded "Forbidden Colours (Version)" included on the original CD of Secrets of the Beehive was removed.

The art for Weatherbox was designed by Russell Mills and Dave Coppenhall, and included a poster featuring Sylvian's discography on one side and art by Russell Mills on the other. The liner notes for Weatherbox were provided by Steve Lake, with photos by Russell Mills and Alistar Thain. A Japanese edition of the box set, with an additional 54-page booklet designed by Shinro Otake and Katsuhiro Kinoshita and the lyrics are printed both in Japanese and English, was also produced. (Wikipedia)

Lovely, strange and engrossing. this music works as atmospheric background music, close focused intellectual listening, and audiophile massaging of the ear-brain pathway. boxset takes artistic advantage of the medium. influential, self-referential and otherworldly. Really nice artwork by Yuka Fuji and Russell Mills. The music is just wonderful. (Amazon)

VA - Digging Your Scene, New Pop And All That Jazz 1982-1987 (4 x CDs)

JAZZ POP

VA - Digging Your Scene, New Pop And All That Jazz 1982-1987 (4 x CDs)

Digging Your Scene captures a moment when British pop stepped away from post‑punk austerity and embraced sophistication, rhythm and emotional colour. Between 1982 and 1987, a new kind of pop emerged — stylish, literate, jazz‑inflected, and shaped by musicians who wanted melody without blandness, groove without formula, and elegance without losing edge. This compilation gathers that world in motion, revealing how diverse the movement truly was.

The set opens in smoky, late‑night territory: Everything But The Girl, Robert Wyatt, Scritti Politti, Joe Jackson, Blue Rondo À La Turk. These tracks blend jazz phrasing with pop clarity, creating music that feels both urbane and intimate. Furniture, Weekend, Carmel and Mari Wilson add theatrical flair, turning everyday stories into small dramas carried by brass, brushed drums and cool‑blue harmonies.

As the mood widens, the compilation shows how New Pop absorbed influences from Latin rhythm, soul, art‑rock and dance culture. Working Week, The Special AKA, Malcolm McLaren and Jah Wobble bring global textures; David Sylvian, China Crisis and Virna Lindt add atmospheric depth; Alison Moyet and Fine Young Cannibals push toward emotional intensity. The sound becomes a blend of groove, intelligence and experimentation, pop that moves with confidence but thinks deeply.

Later selections highlight the era’s polished charm. Swing Out Sister, Heaven 17, ABC, Basia, The James Taylor Quartet and Mondo Kané deliver bright arrangements shaped by horns, synths and crisp rhythm sections. These tracks show how New Pop evolved into a mature, radio‑friendly style without losing its sense of craft.

What makes Digging Your Scene compelling is its sweep. It doesn’t treat New Pop as a narrow genre; it reveals a cultural moment when British musicians embraced sophistication and curiosity, creating songs that felt modern, stylish and emotionally resonant. For collectors, it’s a beautifully curated map of an era often overshadowed by louder movements. For listeners, it’s a reminder that the early‑to‑mid eighties produced some of the most inventive, elegant pop of its time, music built for night streets, quiet rooms and the thrill of discovery.
