Rising to prominence in the 1960's, Psychedelic folk (sometimes acid folk or freak folk) is a loosely defined form of psychedelia, is one of the most popular sub-genres of folk music. Compared to the many different forms of music to emerge during that time, psychedelic folk fused elements of the folk music of that time and psychedelic rock and was a new and exciting genre. Known for it's atmospheric sound, psychedelic folk creates a mystical experience for listeners that was far removed from what music fans expect because they also fuse Eastern music bands and influence. Its lyrics are often concerned with such subjects as the natural world, love and beauty and try to evoke a state of mind associated with the effects of psychedelic drugs. It retains the largely acoustic instrumentation of folk, but adds musical elements common to psychedelic music.
The first musical use of the term psychedelic is thought to have been by the New York-based folk group The Holy Modal Rounders on their version of Lead Belly's 'Hesitation Blues' in 1964 (Included here as the opening track on CD3) ...
These are tracks from music I own that fall into the overlapping areas of folk-rock, acid-folk,some mostly traditional folk and sometimes with progressive flourishes as well. Enjoy!
